Breaking News
Six months after sharing a French Dip at Cole’s, Andrea is preparing Mickey’s morning coffee at her house. They appear to be in a relationship, but Andy seems hesitant to make it official. She even has a date with someone else planned for that evening.
Mickey’s new driver Eddie Rojas has a Twitch channel where followers watch him crochet. Eddie continues to surprise us.
Andrea receives the assignment of taking over a high-profile case after the original prosecutor goes into labor. Her boss Adam Suarez encourages her to wrap up her current caseload, which includes the prosecution of an abusive ex. Deborah Glass is the victim.
Meanwhile, Mickey gets served with a subpoena for deposition in Hector Moya’s case claiming unlawful incarceration.
Check with my office
Izzy is stepping up at the office while Lorna is away taking the bar exam. In Lorna’s absence, Izzy makes an appeal to Julian’s partner David. Despite Julian asking David to not visit him in prison, Izzy believes Julian really needs to see David. Izzy asks David to attend the motion to suppress and offers him a ride to the courthouse. David agrees.
Cisco is trying to track down the green Honda Civic seen following Glory the night of her murder. A contact at the salvage yard reports that a vehicle matching that description has turned up, but unfortunately the VIN has been removed. Cisco searches the vehicle and is encouraged when he finds a dark piece of glass suggesting the tinted windows seen in the surveillance video. The burly investigator uses a telescoping mirror to reach the engine block where he finds another copy of the VIN.
Meanwhile, Lorna dons a track suit and settles into her seat to take the bar exam. She takes a few deep breaths. The guy to her right mentions his yogi and then proceeds to ask her out. Sorry, she’s taken! The guy to her left is a “Nervous Nelly” that has already taken the exam 4 times, yikes! Lorna becomes annoyed by one guy tapping his foot and the other guy clicking his pen repeatedly. She puts in her ear buds, takes a deep breath and takes the exam.
Andrea makes a proposal
Andrea Freemann meets with Deborah Glass on the people’s case against Deborah’s abusive ex-husband, Scott Glass. She has learned from Mickey that the judge presiding over the Glass case has been known to sympathize with male defendants that are easy on the eyes. Andrea recommends that they offer a plea deal where Deborah’s ex would serve a year in prison followed by a year of probation with anger management counseling. Andrea proposes that some guaranteed time behind bars is better than the risk of an acquittal at trial. Deborah tearfully agrees saying that she trusts Andrea.
Is this truly what Andrea believes to be best? Or is her proposal influenced by pressure to wrap up the case and move on to the high profile involving a murdered state senator?
In the courtroom
Mickey has filed a motion to suppress the police interview with Julian La Cosse. David arrives at court and Julian expresses some relief seeing him despite requesting otherwise.
Mickey argues that the interview or “conversation” was more like an interrogation. He calls into question what appear to be intimidation tactics used by the detective as seen on camera. Judge Turner seems inclined to rule in Mickey’s favor. Such a ruling would dismantle the case allowing Julian to free. After all, Judge Turner worked as a public defender.
Unfortunately, the judge does not rule in favor of the motion to suppress. We later learn from Lorna that Judge Turner may be feeling pressure from the opponent running against her and does not want to be perceived as “soft on crime”. This is a terrible setback as Julian must remain in jail as he waits months for the case to go to trial.
Julian is distraught and Mickey is discouraged. Prosecutor Forsythe stops Mickey at the elevator to offer a plea deal for Julian. Forsythe questions Mickey’s assumption that Julian will not accept the offer. Mickey makes it clear that only a ruling of “not guilty” will suffice as Julian is not likely to survive any length of prison sentence.
The Lincoln Lawyer gets served
Mickey is blindside outside the courthouse as bail bondsman Val serves him a subpoena.
The paper applies to a case of Hector Moya versus Arthur Rollins (the warden at Victorville). Attorney Sylvester Funaro has filed a habeas petition on behalf of Hector Moya for unlawful incarceration. Mickey expresses confusion as he knows that Sly Funaro is currently serving a prison sentence for tax evasion. How is practicing law? Val points out that the Sly filing the petition is Sly Funaro, Jr.
Mickey wants more information on the nature of the subpoena and names of anyone else being served. He tries to sway Val with an offer of running service for Haller and Associates. Val is intrigued. Mickey asks for the other names. When Val declines, Mickey tries to ease his conscious suggesting that they work together now since he offered a job to Val. Val tries a workaround of asking Mickey for help with directions and thereby shares the names. Also on the list to be served are a DEA agent named James De Marco and a woman named Kendall Roberts. Mickey thanks Val for allowing him to “help” with directions and walks away.
Digging for details
Mickey reaches out to Lorna for help with information on Sly Funaro, Jr. He fails to remember that she is taking the bar exam. Ouch! He also interrupts Cisco who is making headway on the green Honda Civic to tell him to shift gears and get details on Kendall Roberts and Agent De Marco.
Mickey makes a call to the junior Funaro, and we see that he is less than professional with his feet on the desk and a video controller in hand with a Big Gulp on the desk. Haller insists that Sly, Jr. tell him what this is all about. Sly reads from an index card about the habeas motion and tells Mickey they know he was involved with Gloria snitching on Moya. Mickey says he knows Sly, Jr.’s dad is in the same prison as Moya and must be orchestrating the filing process. Mickey demands answers from Sly, Sr.
Connecting new dots
Mickey makes another call wondering what the connection is with receiving a subpoena for the case along with an unheard-of woman and a DEA agent. Cisco cannot answer that question in full but does point out the curiosity that Kendall Roberts’ address shows that she was once roommates with Gloria.
Mickey arrives to Kendall’s home. She is reluctant to talk and seems hesitant to discuss anything related to Glory. Eddie steps in to encourage Kendall to speak with Mickey and she agrees. While Kendall is now working solely in what appears to be the healthcare industry, we learn that Kendall, Glory and a sex worker named Trina Rafferty (aka Trina Trixxx) worked together sometimes fulfilling each other’s appointments. When Mickey asks about any association with Agent De Marco, Kendall has no knowledge of him and shares that Glory was protective of Kendall, keeping her away from Moya and drugs.
There is a knock at the door. Eddie confirms that Val is there to serve the subpoena. Mickey offers to represent Kendall for free so that she does not have to respond to the service. He can take care of it on her behalf. She agrees. After no one comes to the door, Val leaves only to end up leaning on Mickey’s Lincoln waiting for him. Mickey advises that he is representing Kendall and accepts her subpoena. Val is also angry at Mickey after learning that his offer of work was disingenuous. He found out that Cisco is the one that serves paper for Haller & Associates. Ouch!
Trina Trixxx
Mickey asks Cisco to shift gears again and track down Trina Trixxx. He explains that Kendall must have been served to corroborate a story from Trina who was not on the subpoena list, most likely because she is participating in the case already.
Cisco locates Trina and tells Mickey to bring cash. Trina is not going to talk without some bills. Mickey offers $500 initially, but that’s not enough per Trina. He shows her $500 more but will not hand it over until she tells him what she knows about Moya and Agent De Marco.
Trina reveals that Agent De Marco used Trina to get information from clients. She would not report on Hector because that would be too dangerous. She just shared information on lower profile clients. Glory Days was also an informant for De Marco. She was tasked with more because she had a longer history of offenses. Trina could tell that De Marco was obsessed with taking Moya down, so much so that he made Glory plant a gun in Moya’s hotel room.
Trina gets a call, and it sounds like she is reporting back to Sly, Jr. Mickey demands to speak with him and is surprised to hear Sly, Sr. on the other end of the line calling from prison. Mickey demands answers and Sly warns that “the truth is going to come out soon enough”. Sly hangs up and accuses Trina of accepting payment for her testimony. She tells Mickey and Cisco to get out.
Mickey tells Cisco that it is now clear that De Marco was using him like Glory to take down Moya. Mickey’s idea to exchange Moya for Glory’s release last year was really orchestrated by DEA Agent De Marco.
The road ahead for The Lincoln Lawyer
Lorna arrives back to the office exhausted from the bar exam. Izzy receives a strange call about clients cancelling classes in favor of another class in the area. There is a non-compete clause in her lease, and Lorna offers to review it in the morning. Lorna crashes on the couch.
Sure enough, Izzy spots a flyer at the gym near her studio. The gym is offering dance classes by a choreographer who works with Bad Bunny.
Because Sly, Sr. already knew Mickey was at Trina’s apartment, Cisco surmises that Mickey is either being tracked or followed. Cisco and Eddie insist that the Lincoln Lawyer use Uber service until Cisco can check the Lincoln for a tracking device.
Just then Andrea calls Mickey to inform him that she cancelled her other date and invites him over.
Lorna wakes up on the couch later in the night at the office. Cisco has posted the VIN of the green Honda Civic on her computer monitor. Lorna looks it up and calls Mickey to report that she knows the identity of the man in the hat.
