Pete and Mike make So Many Shows’ History with their conversation about Happy Gilmore:

That is right. The first-ever movie mashup from So Many Shows!

Universal Studios released Happy Gilmore in 1996. Happy Gilmore stars Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Carl Weathers, and Frances Bay.

Happy Gilmore:

The Plot:

The 1996 movie introduces us to Happy Gilmore, played by Adam Sandler, a down-on-his-luck wannabe hockey player. Even though he is not the best skater or puck handler, he has always dreamed of playing in the NHL. The one thing he has going for him is a powerful slap shot. Happy’s father died when he was younger, and his mom left, so Happy’s grandma raised him after his father passed.

Years later, Happy is living on his own, and after his girlfriend recently broke up with him, he receives a phone call from his grandma saying the government is repossessing her house. Happy races over, and finds out that his grandma has not paid her taxes in over 10 years. She owes the IRS about $270,000. Happy helps his grandma move into a nursing home, while he finds a way to come up with the money to help her. While a couple of movers are messing around with Happy’s grandpa’s golf clubs, and after challenging them, he finds out he can drive a golf ball over 400 yards.

He figures he can make money by betting with golf enthusiasts with his powerful drives at the driving range. There, the club pro Chubbs, who notices how far Happy can drive the ball, convinces Happy to play in the club’s tournament round the following day. The winner of the tournament will earn a spot on the PGA Tour. Happy wins the tournament, and in doing so, catches the eye of one of the PGA Tour’s professional golfers, Shooter McGavin. But not in a good way.

The PGA Tour:

Happy has some issues with his anger, and because of that, Virginia Venit agrees to work with Happy to smooth out the rough edges; otherwise, Happy will be kicked off the tour. Happy straightens up his act under the supervision and advice from Virginia, and draws a massive crowd because he is not like the other golfers on the tour. Even though Happy eased up a bit on his anger and antics, he is still unlike any other golfer we have ever seen before.

Happy has a rough start trying to learn the game as he goes along, but even without any help, he is still able to improve enough to make a decent amount of money. Shooter McGavin is not happy about Happy drawing the crowds he is drawing and decides to take matters into his own hands by calling someone to come to the next tournament to harass Happy. That next tournament was the PGA Pro-Am, where Happy is paired up with Bob Barker. The man who Shooter paid to make Happy’s life hell on the course pays off, and Happy hauls off and hits Bob Barker when Bob gets in Happy’s face about how badly he is playing.

The PGA suspends Happy due to the altercation, and with that, the best way to finalize the money needed to save his grandma’s house was to do a commercial for Subway. However, Shooter heard about Happy’s grandmother’s troubles and showed up to buy the house instead at the auction. Shooter wants Happy off the tour, and he will sign the house over to him if Happy agrees to leave the tour. Virginia is the voice of reason, though, and convinces Happy that his grandma would rather see him succeed than get the house back that way.

Happy Gilmore learns to play golf:

To beat Shooter McGavin, Happy has to learn to fine-tune his game and asks Chubbs for his help. Chubbs helps by taking Happy to a mini-golf course to learn to work on his short game. It works, and Happy’s game is at the top of what it needs to be to help in beating Shooter. But does he beat Shooter McGavin for the Gold Jacket? Check out the movie to find out.

A Sequel A Long Time in the Making:

As fans of the movie, Pete and Mike have been eagerly awaiting the release of this sequel. Will it stand on its own, or will it rely solely on the humor from the first movie?

Happy Gilmore 2 drops on Netflix this upcoming Friday, July 25th.

Best Golf Movie Ever?

Pete asked the question if Happy Gilmore is the best golf movie of all time. There are some great golf movies out there, so what are your thoughts about that?
