The Bosch investigation is on a collision course in Bosch: Legacy season 3 episode 4.

Bosch: Legacy Debrief for Season 3, Episode 4 “Whippoorwills”

Written By: Alexa Junge

Directed By: Alex Zakrzewski

Refresh your memory:

  • When talking with Finbar McShane and Sheila Walsh, Bosch discovers Stephen Gallagher might have been embezzling money from his own company through a fake company named Orion.
  • Mo and Bosch see Finbar selling off heavy machinery equipment to a mystery person in an equipment yard.
  • During an on-air debate, Emmitt Archer mentions the investigation into Harry Bosch, which Robertson and his partner Lopez are investigating.
  • Curtis Dignan, who Bosch had written a parole recommendation for, is told by Bosch to leave town before Robertson tracks him down.
  • Preston Borders is willing to talk and wants to sit down with a DA to make a deal.
  • Harry Bosch got a subpoena to appear before a grand jury.

Follow-home Robberies:

A New Lead:

Lucy, a tattoo artist and Vasquez’s CI, gives Vasquez and Maddie information on the robbery crew. She tells them about a new crew but does not have any names. The crew knows their stuff and pushes quality merch to Hollywood recording studios.

With the new information about the crew selling merch to Hollywood recording studios, Vasquez locates a car on camera footage. She plugs the make and model into ALPRs (Automated License Plate Readers) and gets a result. Vasquez locates the vehicle parked outside a recording studio. The studio is named Find Your Grind.

Life imitating art:

While walking through the hallway at Hollywood station, Chris Downey stops Maddie and says he knows her. He mentions that he is a public defender but wants to have drinks with her. She nicely declines, but you can tell she is smitten with the conversation.

Fun fact: The man playing Chris Downey is Madison Lintz’s real-life fiancé Jackie Kay.

Stakeout:

Vasquez and Maddie set up outside the recording studio to see if they can spot the vehicle. Vasquez gives Maddie a bit of gruff about the public defender Maddie met. Maddie gets serious after that because of the warning she received from Mank about IA wanting to talk to her. I like that Vasquez gave her an ear to listen. “Cone of silence”, Vasquez says. Maddie opens up about the situation with Bosch, and shares that she did not report the call Bosch got from Borders. Vasquez tells Maddie that she only has to worry about what she did, not her dad.

The Gallagher Family investigation:

Crider’s Background:

Mo tracks down information on the man Finbar McShane met with at the equipment company. Bing Crider, a native of East LA, charmed his way out of trouble as a juvenile, but his luck ran out when he was involved with his crew in a botched robbery where a man was shot and killed. Mo indicates that Crider had a “come to Jesus moment” and has supposedly turned things around. He becomes a bona fide businessman when the felony murder law changes. There are rumors of money laundering and extortion on top of buying stolen machinery. However, law enforcement has not yet proven this. Harry wants to meet with Crider somewhere public.

More of Mo’s gadgets:

Mo knocks out the Wi-Fi at Crider’s equipment company to gain access to the computers. After gaining access, he says, “Ask and ye shall receive. Knock, and the door shall be opened.” There is a slight moment when we think Mo is busted, but Crider asks for his business card instead.

Crider gets a message from Finbar stating they need to meet. Bing replies that they should meet at his construction yard at 8 p.m.

Bosch introduces himself to Crider:

Instead of Finbar, Bosch shows up at the construction yard to make Crider’s acquaintance. In this scene, Bosch disarms Crider one-handed as he is holding Crider at gunpoint. Harry removes his weapon, releases the magazine, slides the chamber over his leg, and hands the empty gun back. It is such a great move performed by Titus Welliver.

Bosch learns that Finbar seems to be busting out the Gallagher business by offering Crider half off the machinery. Crider says that the equipment quality appears to be trailing off, as if Finbar is scraping the bottom of the barrel. Bosch tells Mo that Finbar is busting out the business meaning that he is pocketing the proceeds until there’s nothing left to sell. Crider has an alibi for the weekend the Gallagher family went missing.

Bosch confronts Sheila:

Bosch shows up at Sheila’s house wanting to talk about Finbar. Harry wants to know about the bust-out, and Sheila says it is not what it looks like. Harry pushes for more info by asking if $100,000 is worth it. Sheila asks him to leave.

Finbar visits Siobhan at the Gallagher house. He finds out that the Gallaghers have been at the cabin recently because Kerry’s blanket was left there. Siobhan calls Harry “dogged” and says she believes he will solve the case. It seems that Finbar is just visiting to get information on the case.

After Sheila gets the visit from Bosch, she gets curious and looks into Finbar’s computer. She gets into the bank account to see what is going on. She calls Bosch and leaves a message to call her back, but Finbar overhears her message through the office door.

Chandler’s Run For DA:

Will Chandler cut ties?

Honey is meeting with her inner circle about the bombshell about Harry Bosch. Jen Kowski has drafted a statement about eliminating an association with Harry. Chandler has no intent of throwing Bosch to the wolves and declines. Amanda has more bad news. She tells them that the LA Times editorial board will meet to discuss their endorsement for Chandler. Honey has a moment where she hears her inner circle arguing about the next steps and asks everyone to give her a minute alone.

Chandler calls a man named Mr. Porter to ask to meet with the LA Times editorial board to plead her case. Chandler gets a text from her contact, Alex Kennedy, who is her inside man in Archer’s campaign before calling Bosch. Honey tells Harry that Archer has phone logs and a money trail between Borders and Bosch. Harry says none of that has happened and asks if she is firing him. He says that is what he would do if he were in her position. He encourages her to save her campaign. Chandler reassures Harry that she will not be firing him because that would make her look weak.

Honey gets her audience:

Scott Anderson also makes an appearance. Honey meets with him to see if he can help her get in front of the editorial board.  Anderson says he will see what he can do. Chandler makes some promises if she wins the election.

Honey gets her chance to plead her case to the LA Times editorial board. After starting to read from a script, she goes off script to tell them that the LA Times used to have “backbone and balls”. She defends Bosch and says Archer is a “‘What’s in it for me?’ politician.”

Maddie & Bosch:

Maddie does not answer when Bosch calls her and sends the call to voicemail. Vasquez tells her she should talk to her dad about what is going on with the investigation into him. Maddie is furious with Harry. The more Maddie thinks about it, the more Maddie believes he is involved. Maddie says she does not trust him enough to tell her the truth.

Food for thought: I know Gurbizs’s story about Bosch’s past in the war rattled Maddie, but do you think she does not trust her father?

The Investigation into Bosch:

Curtis Dignan meets Detectives Robertson and Lopez:

When leaving the parole officer’s office building, Robertson and Lopez approach Curtis Dignan. Robertson asks Curtis to get in their car and ride with them to talk back at RHD. Inside the interview room, Curtis holds fast as best as he can. Lopez and Robertson ask him about his ties to Borders, Dockweiler, and Bosch. At one point, Dignan seems about to accept an offer to cooperate and wear a wire to help get a confession. But then Dignan flips them off and declines to help.

Captain Rick Seals, Robertson, and Lopez discuss the next step. They decide to bring Preston Borders down to sit with the DA. Robertson will put Dignan and Borders in cells next to each other at MDC and wire the cells to hear what they say. Seals asks if Robertson can stimulate chatter between Borders and Dignan. Robertson replies with, “Like a whippoorwills’ ass.” Robertson says his mother used to say that line indicating that whip-poor-wills are “chatty”.

While driving Borders to MDC, Robertson rattles his cage by saying that Curtis Dignan has been speaking with them. He says things are coming together in the investigation and that Dignan planted the burner phone in Borders’ cell. Do you feel this is a good play by Robertson?

Borders learns that he must tell his story to the grand jury, but that is not until tomorrow. Meanwhile, he must spend the night at MDC. He is not happy about that.

“In a pickle? Take the nickel”:

You may recall that line from last season. After answering some of the questions asked by DDA Susan Saldaño, Bosch gets a couple of questions he does not feel like answering. Bosch invokes his fifth amendment rights and respectfully declines to answer the questions.

Borders also gets questioned by the grand jury. Every scene makes you chuckle a little bit. The one remark I found hilarious was when Susan Saldaño told him that Robertson and Lopez linked the other burner phone to Bosch’s house. Borders replies, “You’re kidding me.” After the next question, he pleads the fifth as well.

Borders’ extraction plan:

Bosch notices Rita:

Rita is outside as Borders gets escorted into the courthouse, but neither Robertson nor Lopez recognizes her. She signals to a man across the street. Bosch however clocks Rita outside the courthouse after he testifies to the grand jury. He enters the garage to ask if Robertson or Lopez allowed Borders to call his wife. They each said they did not. I like the line Bosch uses in this scene, “Something ain’t ‘Jake’ here, I don’t know what, but you guys are being played. We all are.”

“Jake” was a popular slang word from the Roaring Twenties/Great Depression era. It indicated that a person or thing was in good order. Synonyms for “Jake” include “okay,” “hunky-dory,” and “copacetic.” – disappearingidioms.com

Robertson dismisses Bosch’s warning saying “We’ll see.” Bosch says, “Vaya con Dios.” Why will no one listen to Bosch’s warnings?

Following the pack:

Bosch waits outside in his Jeep and sees Rita on the street again. She gets in her car and flashes the headlights to a truck parked a couple of vehicles back from Bosch. The truck’s lights flash back, and Rita drives away. Bosch now knows Rita is involved with what is going on, and follows the vehicle, which is following Robertson and Lopez’s city ride. The driver of the truck radios a person’s movements. On a street, a van pulls from the curb and collides head-on with the RHD city ride. This sets off the airbags in Robertson and Lopez’s faces, incapacitating them briefly.

The man driving the van steps out with a shotgun aimed at Robertson and Lopez to prevent them from fighting back. Following the RHD city ride, the man driving the truck gets out of his vehicle, approaches the city ride, and freed Borders from the back of the car. The two of them start celebrating, but the celebration is cut short when Bosch stops his Jeep behind them. Harry steps out of his Jeep and yells at them to freeze. Bosch’s arrival gives Robertson and Lopez a chance to get out of their car. A shootout commences between all the men. The men trying to get Borders both get shot dead, but I might suggest that the real victim in this scene is Bosch’s Jeep. The vintage vehicle takes shots to the windshield, a front tire, and the engine compartment. Could this be the end of Bosch’s Jeep?

A run for the ‘Borders’:

There is a trusting moment when Borders runs off and Bosch goes to chase after him. Bosch asks Jimmy to cover him, and Jimmy does so without any argument. I feel like there is trust between the two of them. Instead of doing the whole detective thing where Robertson would tell Bosch to stand down, Bosch can go after Borders while Jimmy makes sure the men helping Borders get neutralized and make sure Lopez is okay.

After covering for Bosch and seeing that the two men are put down, Jimmy follows Bosch and Borders into a warehouse where Borders and Bosch are exchanging gunfire. Borders gets the upper hand over Bosch and gets his gun, but Robertson gets there in time to save Bosch’s life.

Was it just me or was there an unspoken apology and forgiveness between Robertson and Bosch next to the ambulance? Robertson says they will clear him, and Bosch says he knows he will, calling Jimmy “brother”. There are a couple of seconds where they don’t say anything but nod to each other.

After the events of Borders’ escape plan, Honey has a press conference in which she promptly throws Archer under the bus big time.

Food for thought: Do you feel this tip the scales in her favor?

Bosch finally checks the voicemail from Sheila after helping stop Border’s escape, He borrows Maddie’s car to go to Gallagher’s business. He finds Sheila dead in Finbar’s office.
