Where is the Gallagher family?
Bosch: Legacy Debrief for Season 3, Episode 3 “Blankie”
Written By: Brian Anthony and Emily Ragsdale
Directed By: Tawnia McKiernan
Refresh your memory:
- Bosch had written a parole recommendation for a man named Curtis Dignan, who was in the same cell block as Preston Borders and Kurt Dockweiler.
- Maddie heard a story about her father when he was in the Special Forces in Afghanistan.
- Robertson and Lopez recovered and reviewed a surveillance video of Bosch assaulting Dockweiler. Their investigation is a “Chief Special.”
- Maddie and Vasquez are still looking for suspects of follow-home robberies.
- The Gallagher family has disappeared, and when searching their cabin, Bosch finds the daughter’s blanket in a closet.
Let’s check in with the race for DA:
On-air bombshell:
Honey gets invited to do a live on-the-air radio debate between her and Emmitt Archer on LAist. In the discussion on live radio, Emmit Archer is getting his rear end handed to him, so he drops the bombshell. He shares that Harry Bosch, who had just provided Chandler’s security at the fundraiser, is under investigation for conspiracy to commit murder. Larry Mantle is hosting the debate between them and says that what Archer just said was a serious allegation. Archer doubles down, saying that his office is conducting the inquiry. Honey is at a loss for words. She says she has not heard of any investigation into Harry Bosch.
Bosch calls Maddie immediately after hearing the broadcast but gets her voicemail. He decides to go to her place instead. Before leaving his office, he gets a subpoena to appear before a grand jury.
We have heard Larry Mantle’s voice on Bosch and Bosch Legacy in the past. In season 7, he gave a news report about Honey being in the hospital after having been shot. Twice in Bosch Legacy season 1, Bosch heard Larry on the radio giving news reports about Whitney Vance’s death and Paula Calderon getting shot and wounded during a traffic stop.
Aftermath of the debate:
As Bosch drives up to Honey’s house, there are a bunch of reporters in front of her home. Bosch sneaks to the back of the house to talk with Honey. Harry tells her that he got subpoenaed and that Robertson was the detective on the case. Either Archer knows something or thinks he does. Chandler tells Bosch that she has someone on the inside of Archer’s campaign.
After Michelle walks into campaign headquarters, Jen greets her with the latest poll numbers. The numbers are plummeting, and they are not in their favor. Later that night, Chandler meets with her mole in Archer’s campaign to thank him for the heads-up about the investigation into Bosch. DDA Alex Kennedy is her inside man. He tells Honey that it caught them all by surprise, but he will make it up to her.
Follow-Home Robberies:
An unfair split of the proceeds:
The robbery crew leader shows a potential buyer a bunch of stolen merchandise. She shows off a Breitling Bentley watch, valued at $9,000, but offers it to the potential buyer for three grand. They haggle a bit, and she says there are many recording studios within a five-block radius from where they are. He pays her the three grand, and she leaves.
Later, she divides the profits among her two accomplices, who must share 50%. She keeps the other 50%. The two men complain about the uneven split, but she ignores them. A rift seems to be starting to form between them.
Food for thought: Do you feel it will lead to them turning on each other later?
Taking matters into their own hands:
Shortly after knowing their split is unfair, the two men decide to take matters into their own hands. Even after being warned that a couple leaving a restaurant smelled of military or police, they ignored her warnings and followed them anyway. After approaching the vehicle, the driver fights back against being robbed and winds up discharging the robber’s gun. The driver has a gun holstered on his ankle and pulls the weapon to protect his wife and himself. He does not take any shots as the robbers make a getaway. Before leaving, one of the robbers refers to the other driver as “Flaco” and yells that the target was strapped.
Questioning witnesses:
Maddie takes a report from a witness to the robbery. The witness said she heard at least one gunshot, shouting, and one called the other Flaco. Maddie asks Vasquez what “Flaco” means, and Vasquez says it means skinny.
The Dockweiler Investigation:
More evidence against Bosch:
Lopez shows Captain Rick Seals a paper trail of money going into Preston Borders’s prison canteen account every month. The money is from his wife, Rita Tedesco, and amounts to $500 each time. There is a card in Bosch’s name with cash withdrawals for the same amount each month. Harry Bosch would not be this sloppy. There is no way he would leave a trail like this. Do you feel the same way?
Even still, now there is a burner phone traced to the neighborhood where Harry lives, resurfaced footage from the interview room with Dockweiler and a money trail from Bosch to Borders.
Robertson wants to sit down with Preston Borders to lock his story down.
Maddie talks with Vasquez:
Maddie and Vasquez get food from a food truck. It’s at the exact location where Bosch, Edgar, and Detective Chris Collins get food in season 7 when talking about Gladys Rodriguez, aka La Mayorista. Maddie tells Vasquez there is an investigation into her dad, but she cannot tell anyone, especially her dad. Vasquez tells Maddie that the inquiry “might die on the vine”.
Robertson and Lopez meet Borders:
To secure Borders’ statement, Robertson and Lopez meet with Preston at the prison and record the conversation. They discuss Curtis Dignan, the money going into his monthly canteen account, and the burner phone in his cell. Preston tells them that the burner phone found in his cell just appeared one day, and if they want any more information, they should sit him down with the DA, and he will spill all the details.
After playing the recording to Archer, Emmitt asks what Borders wants. Preston wants a transfer to Lancaster to be closer to his wife. Robertson and Lopez run down all the evidence they have acquired so far, and Archer says to put Borders in front of a grand jury and get his statement.
Fallout from the on-air debate:
Bosch shows up to Maddie’s door to talk to her about what happened in the on-air discussion between Honey Chandler and Emmitt Archer. Maddie tells Harry that Robertson and Lopez had stopped by to discuss the “Chief’s Special” and asks Harry if the investigation is about Dockweiler. There is a moment when Bosch swears on Eleanor’s memory that he had nothing to do with what happened to Dockweiler, and Maddie asks about Afghanistan. Maddie tells Bosch to leave – a contentious meeting between father and daughter.
What is Rita up to?
Rita Tedesco talks with Preston on the phone about visiting him soon. After getting off the phone, she walks into an automotive shop. Two guys are inside grinding what looks like a heavy-duty grill guard. One of the men says they are just about done, to which she replies that she is about done, too.
The investigation needs to go into “overdrive”:
Robertson tells Captain Seals that because of Archer going public with the investigation into Bosch, they need to go into “overdrive”. They discuss Curtis Dignan and suggest maybe he can shed some light on what is happening. Lopez and Robertson set up near where Dignan works and see Bosch and Curtis talking outside. They are not able to hear the conversation, but Bosch gives Curtis a heads-up that the detective on the case will put things together, and that Curtis should leave town.

Bosch continues his investigation:
The family cabin:
In Beto and Bosch’s opinion, the cabin is too clean. Now they know that the Gallagher family had been there recently. Bosch has to get back to LA to follow up on Gallagher’s business. Siobhan says she will wait a few days to ask if anyone has seen the family. Before Bosch heads out, he takes Siobhan’s hands and tells her not to lose hope. She says a couple of times that she won’t, but was that to convince Bosch or herself?
Gallagher Equipment Rental:
Bosch meets with Sheila Walsh and Finbar McShane at the equipment rental place owned by Stephen Gallagher. He talks with Sheila and Finbar separately to get each of their takes on Stephen without them collaborating. Harry discovers that Stephan brought Finbar on as a partner to balance the company financially. He also finds out that Stephen was most likely embezzling money from the company. I think it was a nice editing touch of the scene where Bosch’s questions cut back and forth between Sheila and Finbar.
Siobhan tries to help:
Siobhan stays behind at the cabin to ask around about her missing family and starts posting missing posters. Beto sees her stapling a poster on a board and calls Bosch to let him know. Bosch calls Siobhan and tells her he knows her intentions are good but to stop tacking up flyers. People could call in with fake tips or sightings and deplete limited resources.
Mo finds a missing piece:
Mo looks at the information about the Gallagher business that Sheila had given to Harry. He notices a name not on the list but who had once been an employee. It is Justin Boatman, Sheila Walsh’s son, who has a record for drugs, theft, and aggravated assault. Bosch visits Justin, and Justin tries to stab Harry with a screwdriver after Bosch asks Justin if he knows where the Gallagher family went. Bosch counters the attack and punches Justin in the gut, knocking his wind out. Harry gets some answers about the Gallagher business but a few more questions to go with them.
Bosch pays Sheila another visit at Gallagher’s rental business. She is angry about how Harry handled her son and tells him to stay away from him. Harry quickly plants a listening device in her office so Mo can listen to what Sheila and Finbar talk about after he leaves. Does Bosch always enjoy shaking the tree to see what falls out? Out in the Jeep, Mo tells Bosch that Sheila has just said he was an insufferable a-hole. Bosch retorts that he has been called worse. Mo hears something else which gets his attention, but Bosch says he doesn’t want to know what was said.
Something falls out of the tree:
Mo emails Harry an audio file with a conversation between Finbar and Sheila. They are talking about a deal going down the next evening, but it is for less than before. Finbar also warns Sheila about what happens to people who mess around with the guy he is meeting. There is some shady stuff going on at Gallagher’s Equipment Rental. Mo and Bosch hope to find out with who the next night.
Bosch and Mo tail Finbar McShane as he assists in bringing heavy machinery to an equipment yard. Mo records the interaction between Finbar and the owner of the company using a camera with a telescoping lens. Bosch looks on through binoculars. They see that Finbar did not get a fair deal for the equipment. Mo and Bosch discuss what might be going on between Finbar and this man. Bosch says he does not know for sure what’s going on, but whatever it is, it “ain’t kosher”.
Writer’s note: I enjoyed seeing Bosch and Mo bet on whether or not Finbar was going to take the deal with the man he meets. Harry wins the bet and seems pleased with himself. He says, “Give me, give me, give me,” in Spanish to Mo.
Coltrane sighting:
We finally get a few scenes inside the Bosch house and also a couple of shots of Coltrane too.
The Gallagher Family:
We see the Gallagher family at the start and end of the episode. The opening shows Kerry waking up a month earlier getting out of bed and looking for her parents. She calls out to them down a staircase and instead sees someone with a flashlight aiming the beam up the stairs. She hides in the closet in her room. She tries to get behind a box but is spotted and taken.
At the end of the episode, we see the family tied up in the back of a van and driven out into a wooded area. The van stops, the driver gets out, opens the back, and takes Kerry out of the van. This is where the episode ends making for both a dark opening and ending.
Food for thought: Why was the family targeted? Did they see something, or was it from Stephen’s involvement with embezzling money from his company?
