There are a lot of moving parts in the second episode of Bosch: Legacy season 3.
Bosch: Legacy Debrief for Season 3, Episode 2 “Bosching Bosch”
Written By: Tom Bernardo & Kyle Long
Directed By: Sharat Raju
Refresh your memory:
- RHD, The Chief of Police, and Emmit Archer have tasked Robertson to investigate whether or not Bosch conspired to have Dockweiler murdered.
- Chandler’s team had requested extra officers to help with security at a fundraiser. No one showed up, and Frank Sheehan was close to carrying out his plan.
- Bosch had a clandestine meeting with someone who used to be in prison as Wasco with Borders and Dockweiler.
- Vasquez and Maddie are investigating a string of follow-home robberies.
- A burner phone pinged to the neighborhood of Harry Bosch, which made a few calls to a burner phone found in Borders’s prison cell.
A war crime story?
A grim tale:
At the start of the episode, we are in the presence of a funeral of an old Army buddy of Bosch’s, Josh Brady. They had served together in Afghanistan. After the funeral, Bosch collects a shell casing from the 21-gun salute and sees Maddie has joined nearby. He meets up with her, and Ken Gurbizs an Army buddy of Bosch’s who had also served in Afghanistan comes up to the two of them. Ken convinces Bosch and Maddie to get a drink at the reception after the funeral in honor of their fallen friend.
At the reception, Gurbizs tells Maddie a story about Bosch during the war, and the tale visibly shakes her a bit. The story was about a time when Bosch was able to get a confession from a bomb maker who had taken out part of their caravan with an IED. It was a dark account about Bosch eliminating the bomb maker, but I wonder if we are not getting the whole story. Do you think Bosch did what his team thought he did?
Maddie talks with Honey:
After ignoring her father’s call, Maddie visits Chandler. First, she wants to see if she is okay after the situation at Plaza De La Raza. However, she also wants to vent about the story she heard about Harry in Afghanistan. The story also gets Maddie wondering what other secrets Harry is holding back from her. Honey says that Harry probably has a lot of secrets and most likely excellent reasons for not burdening her with them.

A new client, a new case:
The Gallagher family:
As Bosch returns to his office, he sees a woman standing by his door; her name is Siobhan Murphy, and she is over from Dublin. Her daughter, son-in-law, and grandkids have gone missing; they vanished a month ago without a trace. Their names are Kathleen, Stephen, Kerry, and Luke Gallagher; the kids are only 7 and 8 years old. We all know how cases involving kids affect Harry. Beto Orestes, who works for the Ventura County Sherriff’s office, recommended Harry. Siobhan hands him an envelope of photos of the family so Bosch can get a sense of them as people. In addition to pictures of the family, Bosch also received some home movies of the family as well.
The Gallagher family van:
Harry meets with the missing persons detective and looks over the Gallagher family van, which was found near the Mexico border. No identifiable prints or foreign DNA were found in or on the vehicle, and there were no signs of foul play. Bosch asks the detective what his working theory is. The investigator says it might be what it looks like. The family left for Mexico because Stephen had been embezzling money from his company. After being asked if he could look into the case, the missing persons detective gives Bosch his blessing.
Mo gets a key piece of evidence:
At the Gallagher family home, as Bosch and Siobhan enter the house, she states that there hasn’t been anything but junk mail in the mailbox daily. Do you think that’s a possible clue as to what’s happening with the Gallagher family? Mo successfully gets a video of the Gallagher family packing their van and leaving from a neighbor’s exterior camera. Siobhan points out that her granddaughter, Kerry, was seen carrying a blanket with her. She said she made Kerry the blanket and the young girl never goes anywhere without it. The video was from the weekend the Gallaghers were leaving for a vacation. Bosch says he’s heading to Ojai, and Siobhan says she will join him.
The family cabin in Ojai:
Harry drives Siobhan up to the cabin in Ojai and meets Beto there. Siobhan has the keys, and they make their way into the house. There is no sign that the family has been there for a while. When checking Carrie’s room, Bosch checks the closet and finds the blanket Carrie never went anywhere without. It was on the ground behind a box. Siobhan comes in and sees him picking up the blanket. The blanket at the cabin is a significant clue that the family has recently been there. Earlier in the episode, Bosch, Mo, and Siobhan saw Carrie drop and pick up the blanket when loading up the van.
The episode closed at this point, and we’ve all seen that worrisome look on Harry’s face before.

Robertson’s Investigation:
Missing interview room footage:
Dockweiler’s attorney, James Rafferty, informs Robertson and Lopez that Bosch assaulted Dockweiler in an interview room at Hollywood station and threatened to remove his eye with a pen. There is no evidence of any footage, meaning someone turned off the camera or deleted it afterward.
Robertson and Lopez visit Sergeant Mankiewicz at Hollywood station to discuss the missing footage from the interview room. They even talk with Mank in the same room Dockweiler claimed to be assaulted in. Mank initially deflected the insinuations, but after Robertson asked to check the mainframe for the records, Mank’s demeanor changed. After obtaining the footage on a thumb drive and viewing it on their laptop, Robertson react to the look he saw on Harry’s face as he left the interview room.
Another blast from the past:
Robertson is at a bar chatting with the bartender. What do you know? It’s our favorite bartender, Shaz. The fans haven’t seen her since season 7 of the original series. Are Robertson and her an item? Or is it more of an on-and-off relationship? Jimmy is regaling her with a tale of how he hurt his hand at one point in his career. Lopez sits next to Jimmy and asks why they are the ones investigating Harry Bosch.
Jimmy tells Lopez about the situation from season three of the original series, where Bosch didn’t do anything to stop Edward Gunn from being murdered. Robertson tells Lopez you can’t go at Bosch like you would anyone else. You have to investigate him the way he investigates.
“Bosching” Bosch:
Lopez and Robertson go to Bosch’s office, and as Robertson is lock-picking the office door, Lopez says it sounds like something Bosch would do. Robertson says, “we’re bosching Bosch.” After Jimmy jimmies the door lock, they go inside to see what they can find. The only thing worth noting was a thank-you card from Curtis Dignan’s family. Harry had written a parole recommendation for Curtis, who was serving a sentence at Wasco State Prison.
Hybristophilia:
Inside a church, we see a person cleaning and learn that it is Rita Tedesco. Yes, that Rita Tedesco, who is still married to Preston Borders! Robertson and Lopez talk to her about Borders for a moment or two. But as soon as they mention Bosch’s name, she told them they would need to speak to her attorney if they wanted to talk to her. I was so happy to see Juliet Landau reprise her role this new season.
Author’s note: The term hybristophilia was used in the original Bosch series when Hector Bonner finds out about Rita Tedesco being married to Preston Borders. Hybristophilia is the phenomenon characterized by an attraction to those who commit crimes.
Maddie in the crosshairs:
Maddie also gets a visit from Robertson and Lopez about the call from Borders to Bosch’s phone. They tell Maddie she should have reported the phone call because of a regulation. Will the investigation into Bosch hurt Maddie’s career? Before leaving, Robertson tells Maddie the investigation is a “chief’s special” and that she cannot talk to anyone about it, especially her father.

Chandler’s Corner:
Honey Chandler needs a whale:
Jen Kowski organizes a lunch for Honey with Lisa Broad, a potential big donor aka a “whale”. In addition to being the whale they were seeking, Lisa is also a major donor to Archer’s campaign. In other words, Honey would have to flip her to their side. I don’t feel the lunch is going all too well for Honey before Michelle shows up to sing her praises of her mother. Jen recommended that Michelle show up so Lisa could see that there was bi-racial DNA in Honey’s family. Do you feel that Jen’s strategy was good or not?
Another task for Harry:
Honey calls Bosch to ask if he could dig in to find out if there was any malfeasance in their request for additional officers at the fundraiser at Plaza De La Raza. Harry meets Mank at a bar to discover what happened in the supervisor’s meeting. Mank says that the Captain handed off the extra protection task to Thorne. Thorne stated he felt it was just a ploy to make it look like Chandler had the support of the LAPD. After that, Mank asks if there is anything else, and Bosch responds by asking if there is anything else Mank wants to tell him. Mank says no, and they order another round.
I feel like Mank should have given Bosch a heads up about Robertson retrieving the interview room footage with Dockweiler. Did you think the same thing? Or do you believe Robertson spooked him enough not to say anything due to him deleting the footage?
There is a tense confrontation between Harry and Thorne behind Hollywood station about not having extra security. Will Bosch be able to prove Thorne, most likely, sat on his thumb instead of making the call to Hollenbeck?
Honey meets with the Chief:
Chandler attempts to strong-arm LAPD Chief Hughes for an unofficial endorsement. However, Chief Hughes calls her bluff, saying that Honey should go public because if someone in the department did something wrong, they should be held accountable.
Follow-Home Robberies:
Meet the crew, sort of:
As it turns out, there is at least a three-person team for the follow-home robberies. A woman scouts locations and potential victims; that information gets relayed to two men working with or for her. The current operation they are casing gets called off due to a couple of squad cars pulling up across the street from the restaurant she was casing. She calls one of the other guys, Nestor. It appears that she is the one who is calling the shots. She refers to the other man as “baby”. Are they in a relationship?
Ticketing the spotter:
Vasquez teases Maddie about the attorney that caught her eye at Plaza de la Raza. They spot a light-colored Honda not completely stopping at a stop sign. They pull over the SUV. While Maddie checks the woman’s license, Vasquez tries talking to the driver. We get Nestor’s last name, Gomez, while Reina speaks to the woman. However, we don’t hear her name throughout the stop. At least they get one name, so Maddie and Vasquez will work up his details. After getting a ticket for failing to yield at a stop sign, the spotter tells the other two robbers that it is time to switch vehicles and explore new neighborhoods.
Six-pack:
The victims from the first episode failed to identify the vehicle or a potential suspect based on photos shown to them in a six-pack by Vasquez and Maddie.
