Breaking News
Mickey brings Legal Siegel home to stay with him temporarily after the elder attorney is kicked out of rehab. Legal is banished after being argumentative with staff, eating food that does not adhere to his diet plan and for throwing cheesecake at a physical therapist.
Hayley blocks Mickey from her Instagram account as she is still blaming him for Eddie’s death.
Lorna receives her first case representing a gentleman named Daniel Varela. Varela turns out to be a pseudonym for Mickey’s repeat offender client, the amusing con artist Sam Scales.
All but one of the elevators at the courthouse is out of service causing delays. Court has been bumped back an hour for Mickey and Lorna on the La Cosse case. The defense has shifted gears to a conspiracy strategy. Today’s goal in court is to prove the relevance of James De Marco in Julian’s case. He reviews his witness list. First up will be Val. Val served the subpoenas for Sly, Jr. Sly, Jr. met with Trina Trixxx who revealed that De Marco used Glory Days to plant the gun on Moya. If the Lincoln Lawyer can show all of these connections in court, he can establish the relevance of putting De Marco on the stand.
Check with my office
Izzy is more nervous driving Mickey after Homeland Security arrests the security detail Moya had originally provided for him. When Mickey asks her if she is okay, she tells him that she is “staying vigilant” as she watches the group of Road Saints following the Lincoln protectively. There is even a Road Saint stationed at their office.
Cisco continues to check the surveillance footage at the Sterghos home. The motorcycle gang member briefly interrupts Cisco to find out if they have “raspberry seltzer”. Uh, no.
Meanwhile, Lorna is nervous about her defense of Sam Scales. Sam is under arrest for running another scam. This time he has been collecting money to purchase grocery gift cards for workers on strike (surely SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild). What a nice idea! Well, except for the part where he donates $100,000 but keeps twice that for himself to cover his “overhead”.
Lorna is worried about the judge assigned to the case who is well-known for true charitable endeavors. Cisco encourages her by reminding her how smart she is. Lorna is feeling the pressure of doing well so they can afford to move out of the apartment. She gets wound up talking about their neighbors who smoke weed. She is worried that Winston is getting high from the smoke coming through the vents. Cisco tries to calm her by reminding her that it is only her first case, and she should take it easy on herself.
Mickey comes up short
It is time for the defense to begin calling their witnesses. First up will be Val followed by Sly Funaro, Jr. and finally Trina Trixxx. The plan is for their three testimonies to build on one another’s creating relevance for calling Agent James De Marco. De Marco is key in their conspiracy defense strategy.
Mickey uses Val’s testimony to establish the timeline of Gloria’s death as related to the subpoena served to her in Moya’s habeas petition. The judge allows Mickey to use her proof of service photo as an exhibit for the jury. Glory looks fearful in the photo.
Val has now tagged Sly, Jr. as he is “representing” Moya in the habeas petition. I use the term “representing” loosely as we all know that his disbarred father Sly, Sr. is really the one who initiated the case strategy for Moya. Prosecutor Forsythe uses this on cross-examination in an effort to damage Junior’s testimony. Nevertheless, Junior’s testimony includes witness Trina Rafferty aka Trina Trixxx as an associate of Glory’s. Trina told Sal that Glory planted the gun per De Marco’s order. Forsythe calls hearsay, and Mickey claims that is exactly why they need to put De Marco himself on the stand.
Sly has now tagged Trina who is next on the witness stand, but she does not cooperate as planned.
Trina “tricks” the Lincoln Lawyer
Trina spoke openly with Mickey at her apartment about De Marco ordering Glory to plant the gun in exchange for making her drug charge go away. She even told Mickey how she, too, provides names for De Marco to help with her own lesser legal troubles. Now all of sudden, when Trina takes the stand, she suddenly disavows any knowledge of ever meeting Agent De Marco. She claims she was only saying De Marco was involved because that’s what he wanted her to say. She felt like she had to since Sly, Jr. was paying for her apartment.
Mickey is stunned and obviously unprepared for this testimony. Clearly, Trina has been the victim of witness tampering and Mickey believes somehow De Marco got to her between talking to Mickey and taking the stand.
The judge rules against calling De Marco as a witness because his relevance to the case was not established. Mickey is furious.
Lorna’s first case
Meanwhile, Lorna has been scrambling between second chair with Mickey on Julian’s case and representing Sam Scales in his arraignment at the courthouse all on the same day. She meets Sam on the 10th floor for his arraignment and is surprised to see him arriving on the general elevator instead of the special elevator for inmates. Lorna learns that the only accessible elevator for inmates is out of order. In fact, only one of the four general elevators is in service as well. Supposedly, upgrades are underway.
It is time for Lorna to join Mickey on the fourteenth floor, so she will not be able to wait for Sam’s name to be called. She asks Izzy to be her lookout in court. As soon as Sam’s name nears the top of the list, Izzy will text Lorna to come that way. Because she is in a hurry, Lorna climbs four flights of stairs to join Mickey.
When Lorna later receives Izzy’s text she heads to the elevator. A young boy has just exited the elevator after having pressed every floor on the elevator panel. There is no way Lorna will get there in time with the elevator stopping at each floor. She begrudgingly takes the stairs again. Lorna arrives just in the nick of time only to learn that the judge is calling a 30-minute recess to participate in a fundraiser call. Sam will return to custody while they wait, and Lorna will return to Mickey. She cannot afford another delay when she needs to be on the fourteenth floor with Mickey. Her face lights up with an idea.
If the shoe fits
The recess is almost over. Lorna makes it down to the 11th floor in the only working elevator. As she exits the elevator, she purposely gets her shoe heel stuck in the elevator as she exits. Now there are zero general elevators in service at the courthouse.
Lorna reaches the podium and explains that her client remains in custody in the basement because there are no ADA accessible elevators working in the building. The judge offers for everyone to join him in the basement to proceed with the arraignment. Lorna points out that they are critically close to Sam not getting his arraignment within the 24 hours to which has a constitutional right.
The judge asks Lorna and the district attorney’s office to come to an agreement rather than pursue trial. Lorna can now scurry back to Mickey on the fourteenth floor.
Court adjourns for the day
Haller and Associates meet outside the court after all proceedings finish for the day. Intern Jessica brings Lorna her spare pair of shoes from the office.
Lorna regales the team with the good deal she arranged for Sam. The charges against him were reduced. He will have supervised probation and must pay back all of the stolen donations. Sam scoffs saying that part will have to wait. He says he must first pay back another investor or he will be “dead”.
Mickey is already frustrated with the judge’s ruling on De Marco testifying. He responds angrily to Sam saying he’ll be dead if he does not pay his firm, plus he cannot ignore the court’s order. Intern Jessica is visibly startled by Mickey’s angry retort. Mickey also insists that Lorna finds another way to establish relevance for De Marco’s testimony.
Andrea feels betrayed
Andrea has had a tough day as well. Her boss pulls her from the Glass case. Andrea has no doubt that Vanessa the junior prosecutor was behind his decision. Earlier, Andrea had confided in Vanessa about not making the warning call to Deborah Glass. She believes that Vanessa took the news to Suarez who chose to take Andrea off the case over admitting he already knew about the infraction.
Later that evening, Andrea arrives to Mickey’s house to confide in him about the day’s events. Mickey is already in a bad mood and snippy at dinner with Legal. When Andrea shares her news, Mickey shows no sensitivity to her feelings and dismisses the matter as a fallout of the DA’s office politics. Andrea spews an expletive at Mickey and leaves.
The next day, Vanessa goes to Andrea’s office requesting the Glass files. The case has been reassigned to Vanessa. Andrea admonishes Vanessa’s behavior, but Vanessa claims Andrea would have done the same earlier in her own career.
Connecting new dots
That night Lorna is desperately trying to find a way to establish relevance for De Marco when she receives a notification from the cameras set up at the Sterghos house. Bishop and De Marco are seen on camera.
Both Cisco and Izzy call Mickey with the news. They will go over the details tomorrow at the office.
Just when Mickey thinks he can go back to sleep he gets another call, this time from Sly, Sr. Sly asks about his son getting hammered in court. Plus, he wants to know what his means for his planned call to the witness stand. Mickey knows Sly wants his “vacation” from prison.
The road ahead for The Lincoln Lawyer
The next day the whole team gathers in the conference room to review the camera footage. Legal joins them as well.
We see Bishop knocking on the door of the house. When no one answers he calls to De Marco and they move to the back of the house where Bishop stands guard as De Marco picks the lock. Then we see De Marco add something to a box in the freezer.
Legal is confused. Mickey brings him up to speed telling him that this house is across the street from a home involved in an unsolved double homicide that both Bishop and De Marco worked. He explains that the team set up the cameras in hopes of triggering a response from Bishop and De Marco when they saw the homeowner’s name on the witness list. It would now appear that they were indeed spooked and have planted drugs in the man’s freezer to shut down any testimony he may have to share about the ten-year-old case. This now connects Bishop and De Marco in the current timeline.
Legal stands up and leaves the conference room. Mickey follows after him. Legal tells Mickey he is leaving for Boca and does not want to be anywhere near this case. He gives Mickey a very serious warning about what he is getting himself into.
