The InBetween Episode 2

We come back to the land of spirits and ghosts just where we left off last week—in Cassie’s living room with our murderous spirit. He tries to bargain with Cassie and wants her help, but even without knowing his story she turns him down.

The episode follows the spirit of a woman and a small child, a little boy. At the same time, a man has contacted the Seattle Police Department saying his wife and teenage son are missing. While the case first points to the father, Elliott, it soon becomes more complicated as details unravel.

Cassie gets into particularly interesting scenarios. I myself am still trying to figure out how her visions and ghost seeing works. I hope over the next few episodes they make it a little clearer—I feel like it jumps around and they kind of use it to whatever they need in the episode. That said, her visions were quite gruesome this week. Being chased by a horse and then run over by a car… followed by being tied up and her blood being taken or kidnapped.

The Gist

I would think this takes a serious toll on a person of her nature. This is shown by Detective Hackett’s husband, Brian. He makes a comment in her kitchen reminding her that her mother dealt with her gift in less than healthy ways. This piqued my interest. So, Cassie did know her mother, at least to some extent. This makes me wonder: was she a drug addict, or a drinker? Would be even more interesting if her daughter became a bartender, and also points to the first episode of her hungover on the couch.

Regardless, Brian is definitely the more hesitant of the couple about her gift. He wants her to be careful (and we also see perhaps some health problems hinted from him… what’s going on there?).

As the case continues but seems to hit a standstill, Asante grows more anxious about using Cassie’s gifts. They realize another man is involved and suspect its because Elliott killed his girlfriend and toddler (the woman Cassie sees at the beginning of the episode). While they are able to find the wife (she was also hit by a car), things get more complicated when Elliott also goes missing. He is found in a building watching his wife being hit by a car over and over, and the suspect, John, has him tied up.

And then…

Things begin to make sense: Elliott was part of a hit and run years ago that ultimately killed John’s girlfriend and son. He’s out for revenge. I understand grief, but this man is twisted. He wants to kill Jason, Elliott’s son as he never wants Elliott to experience happiness in any form again. So, he’s going to kill him how his son died—by bleeding to death. Talk about an eye for an eye.

Running out of time, Asante asks Hackett to have Cassie see if she can have another vision, but he reminds the new detective she can’t turn it on and on. He suggests otherwise. Meanwhile, through the episode, Cassie has avoided Ed Roven, our homicidal ghost despite his best suggestions they can help each other. She knows he’s a bad ghost and wants nothing to do with him. Yet, somehow he gets her to see a vision of where Jason is tied up. How? What even?

All’s Well…

They rush to the storage room where he is being held and save him with little minutes to spare. The family is reunited (sans Elliott as he confessed to the killings to try and save his son), and they will recover. However, this somehow means that Cassie is now connected to Ed now.

At the end of the episode, our trip celebrates their win at the bar Cassie works. Hackett leaves a little early, leaving Cassie with Asante. She goes to refill his glass and has a vision… of Asante with the woman from last week. She questions the vision and he explains what happened. Sally, the woman in the hospital bed is his fiancé, who has been in a coma for six months following an undiagnosed infection of bacterial meningitis. Cassie admits she may be able to talk to her in this state and the two agree to try, as long as she doesn’t tell Tom about what they’re doing. Asante doesn’t want this to affect his job or Hackett’s thoughts of him.
