Take a moment to share:

After assisting with Zorrillo, Harry takes a trip to Mexico in Bosch: Legacy in S3 episode 9.

Bosch: Legacy Debrief for Season 3, Episode 9 “Badlands”

Written By: Tom Bernardo

Directed By: Adam Davidson

Refresh your memory:

  • After murdering the Gallagher family and Sheila Walsh, Finbar McShane leaves Los Angeles with assistance from William Jurgenson.
  • Honey Chandler suspects Patrick Currey killed the diner owner’s son, Shawn Williams, by injecting designer drugs into him.
  • Maddie and Vasquez catch and arrest Albert and Victoria as they were trying to flee from La Zona Rosa.
  • Humberto Zorrillo, who is a top commander with the El Fuerte cartel, oversees a drug operation that operates out of United Chemical. Sheriff deputy Jack Garrity is on Zorrillo’s payroll.
  • Bosch knows that it was Zorrillo who killed Jimmy Robertson.

The cases against Zorrillo

Zorrillo attempts to take out the trash:

The start of this episode was intense. Zorrillo shows up at a house, and we discover that Jack Garrity owns it. Humberto disables a motion sensor at the back of the house to gain entry without detection. Zorrillo receives a phone call from someone above him, who says they are expanding the operation. A warning is left by Zorrillo when he leaves an unfinished cigarette on a picture of Garrity. Garrity is not home. Instead, Jack is across the street at a neighbor’s house, overlooking Zorrillo coming and going.

Coast is clear?

After seeing Zorrillo leave, Jack Garrity enters his house and begins packing his belongings. However, the motion sensor in the back of the house is triggered, and Jack goes to investigate. He does not find anything and when he goes to continue packing upstairs, Bosch sneaks up behind him saying he is going to answer for Robertson’s death. Harry lays out what they know about Garrity, Zorrillo, and El Fuerte. Jack only has one move left, and that is to turn himself in and make a deal.

Honey updates the CAPOs:

Chandler informs Pike and Bowers that they have a new suspect and instructs them to notify RHD to be ready for an interview. Outside LAPD Headquarters, Honey introduces RHD Detective Gerard Willis, who is the D3 heading up the Robertson task force. Bosch turns over Garrity’s gun and badge and asks Willis to close out the case. Chander appreciates all the work Harry had done to help find out who had killed Jimmy.

Garrity spills the beans:

Gerard Willis, Pike, and Bowers interview Garrity about his involvement with Zorrillo, El Fuerte, and the death of Jimmy Robertson. Garrity sent Robertson to the taco truck at Los Palmas. Jimmy thought he was meeting a witness for the case. Garrity says that Zorrillo killed Robertson and that Perra was the fall guy. Jack wants a massive deal from the DA, including witness protection and immunity. However, Willis and the CAPOs will need more evidence than what he has just offered. So, Garrity offers Zorrillo’s location based on the tracker he placed on Zorrillo’s truck, and DNA evidence from the cigarette left at Garrity’s house by Zorrillo.

Chandler and Hughes talk:

Hughes wants an update on the case against Zorrillo. Chandler and Hughes talk about the death penalty since Zorrillo’s body count has to be in double-digit figures. To do that, Honey will need a comprehensive background on Zorrillo from RHD. Hughes says she will see to it that Chandler gets a background. She mentions that it is a good thing that the right person will be held accountable for killing Robertson. They shake hands and part amicably, or so it seems.

Zorrillo wants to move the operation:

Zorrillo calls his boss to inform him that Garrity did not show up. Humberto wants to move the operation, but it will cost him. Since they increased the number of vehicles per week. The cost of 20 cars is $ 4.4 million per week. Now that it is supposed to be 30 cars, the cost per week will be higher, which Zorrillo says he will pay until they find a new location to work from. I performed some calculations and determined that the latest weekly cost for Zorrillo would be $6.6 million per week. Zorrillo looks a bit worried about the price.

Time to move:

Zorrillo is hurriedly trying to get all the workers to load the vehicles onto a truck so they can vacate the premises. As they go to leave, they spot DEA outside, and the agents move inside and arrest Zorrillo and his men. Hovan appears to be very pleased that he was able to arrest Zorrillo. After escorting Zorrillo to the SUV, Hovan calls Bosch to update him about the arrest. Bosch states that since Zorrillo did not flee, it means he is answering to someone.

Backstabbing:

Detective Willis stops by Chandler’s office to inform her in person of some bad news, as if there is any other news that warrants a personal visit. Willis says that the U.S. Attorney’s office is taking over the case involving Zorrillo killing Robertson. The DEA is putting together a joint task force with Chief Hughes. Gerard tells Honey she did right by Robertson, and Honey is appreciative. In the public eye, this means that it appears the LAPD does not have trust in Chandler as the district attorney.

The follow-home crew aftermath

Vasquez speaks with Albert:

Reina talks with Albert, who is in a cell at Hollywood Station. Albert mentions that his mom might try to refinance their home to pay for a good lawyer for Albert. Vasquez says she hopes Mari does not do that. Albert is not happy that Reina is not being sympathetic. Vasquez tells Albert that the time for sympathy was the day before, when she gave him a chance to come forward. The only reason Vasquez was at La Zona Rosa was to make sure nothing bad happened to Albert. Reina tells Albert to work out a deal and take a plea to shorten his sentence. If he does not do that, Albert could face a lengthy prison sentence.

Is Vasquez ready?

At Hollywood Station, Maddie sees that Vasquez is getting ready for her shift. CRU has assigned Vasquez and Maddie to crime suppression on the western corridor. They have a tense conversation about being prepared to get back to work. Vasquez questions Maddie about her readiness to return to work after her ordeal in Season 2.

The talk with Mari:

Vasquez goes to her mom’s house, where Mari is, but is still reluctant to talk. Their mom makes them sit down to have a civilized conversation. She gives Mari and Vasquez space to speak because Vasquez had asked for a moment alone. Before leaving, she reminds them that they are sisters and adults who need to figure it out. After Mari says a few things, Vasquez tries to explain herself. Instead of listening to Vasquez, Mari throws herself on the proverbial sword by saying it is her fault that Albert grew up to be a criminal. As Mari leaves, she tells Reina that she does not want to talk to or see her, and if Reina visits their mom, to let her know because she will not be there.

Food for thought: Do you feel Mari is being fair to Reina?

Bar brawl:

Later, Maddie and Vasquez are having drinks at a bar, where another bar patron is rudely asking the bartender for another round. The man sneaks a bottle off the counter behind the bar. Vasquez has had enough of this guy and confronts him. Reina was looking for a fight, which is a side we have not seen from her before. A fight breaks out between the three men and Vasquez and Maddie. Vasquez and Maddie get tossed out. Maddie puts some cash on the counter before leaving and apologizes for the trouble. Outside, Maddie says she can order them an Uber, but Vasquez wants to walk and let off steam. Maddie goes with her so as not to leave her alone.

Patrick Currey

Another victim?

We see Patrick entertaining a gentleman named Jermaine inside a house. Patrick offers Jermaine a snack, which is drugs inside a small baggie. Currey says that it “will take things to a whole other level”.

The scene cuts to a woman walking her dog along a sidewalk across the street from the house. She sees and hears Patrick leaving the house in a panic, talking on the phone with someone about leaving. Patrick says he will text the person the address. As Patrick backs out of the driveway, the woman gets a good look at him just before he speeds off down the street. She calls 911 to report the incident.

Maddie and Vasquez respond:

The 911 dispatcher reports that the incident is a potential robbery and provides a description of the suspect, prompting Maddie and Vasquez to respond. As paramedics load Jermaine into an ambulance, we see a man drive up, observe the situation, and then drive off. Maddie asks if Jermaine is going to make it. The paramedic tells her that if they had not cleared his airway, he would have died. The paramedic also added that Jermaine had been mumbling about a man who fled the scene. Vasquez tells Maddie that this is the reason she needed to work tonight.

Some secrets should stay buried:

Patrick meets with the man whom we briefly saw pass by the scene at the house when the paramedics were loading Jermaine into the ambulance. His name is Victor Desmond, and he has some information about Honey to share with Patrick. Desmond hands Patrick a file with the notes of Chandler’s therapist. Victor tells Patrick that Chandler saw the doctor for over a year after her shooting, and the file contains sensitive information about her. Desmond says that Patrick might need that information someday. Patrick asks Victor if Victor’s guy will let him know if the situation goes anywhere, and Victor says it is already taken care of.

Food for thought: Who is the guy Patrick asked Victor about?

The hunt for Finbar

The handler:

Gurbizs arranges a meeting with William Jurgenson, who assisted in relocating Finbar McShane. Harry poses as a client whom Jurgenson needs to relocate as well, but it was a sting to get information on where Jurgenson sent Finbar. Meanwhile, in Tecate, Mexico, Finbar pays a kid named Hernando to steal a car and gather food and supplies. Finbar does not pay the full amount agreed upon.

A Game of RISK, anyone?

At Bosch’s house, Mo, Gurbizs, and Bosch work out the places Finbar McShane has appeared under an alias set up by Jurgenson. Finbar’s new alias is Brennan Deely, who seems to be present at several locations at different times around Mexico. Finbar (Brennan Deely) is running out of money and must be looking to score someone else’s cache in Tecate. Mo says he will be on the first flight out. Maddie walks up to the house and, after seeing the map, asks if they are playing a game of RISK.

After crashing their party, Maddie asks to speak with Bosch. She wants to know if Harry’s mission is to capture or kill Finbar. Maddie wants Bosch to promise her that they will bring Finbar back alive to face the consequences in Los Angeles. Before leaving, she asks Gurbizs to get her father home alive in one piece.

Tecate, Mexico:

Bosch and Gurbizs fly to Mexico where they meet up with Mo. Mo has found a few spots where Finbar could have played cards. After Bosch receives the update from Hovan that he arrested Zorrillo, he and Gurbizs walk into a bar in Tecate named El Corsario Rojo. Gurbizs and Bosch talk to the bartender about Finbar but get stonewalled. Outside, Hernando, the boy who helped Finbar approaches Bosch to tell him he knows where Finbar is. Both Bosch and Gurbizs feel Hernando is playing them, until Hernando mentions Finbar’s alias, Brennan Deely.

Stakeout:

Outside the house where Hernando tells told Bosch where Finbar was staying, Mo, Bosch, and Gurbizs set up spots to surveil the property. Who gets the first watch, of course, is the newbie of the group, Mo. During their stakeout, Bosch and Gurbizs talk about whether or not this operation is a capture or kill. Bosch says they are taking Finbar back to LA because he wants to be able to keep Maddie’s trust when he returns. Mo spots a car approaching the structure where Hernando told them Finbar has been residing and informs Bosch. They discuss whether to take down Finbar then or wait until the next night. Mo informs them that Finbar is packing up, and it does not appear to be just for the day.

Arrest and run:

Bosch and Gurbizs beautifully set up Finbar to lower his defenses. After packing up the car, Finbar notices the keys are missing and searches for them. Gurbizs approaches from the back and Bosch from the side. They arrest and pack Finbar into his car to transport him to their SUV. After switching vehicles, Mo informs Bosch and Gurbizs that Tecate police are on the lookout, with Hernando. They decide to split up, Mo will drive across the border, and Bosch and Gurbizs will take Finbar by plane out of Mexico. However, the pilot calls Bosch to let him know the Federales are surrounding the plane.

Finbar’s final moments:

In the SUV, Finbar pushes Bosch’s buttons, and gets his nose broken in the process. Finbar wants Bosch to end it for him because when other prisoners learn what Finbar did to the Gallagher kids, the other inmates will punish him. With the Federales surrounding the plane, Gurbizs swerves the SUV off the road to come up with a plan. McShane starts confessing his sins about what he did to the Gallagher family in hopes to get a suicide by soldier from Bosch or Gurbizs.

At one point Bosch had a knife to Finbar’s throat, saying that Finbar killed children. Bosch is torn between cutting their losses and ending McShane or finding a place to lay low for a night or two. Gurbizs has heard enough when Finbar keeps saying who went into the hole and in what order. Ken pulls his sidearm and puts a bullet through Finbar’s head.

Food for thought: Did they just leave Finbar’s body right where Gurbizs killed him?

“Not by my hand”:

Back inside the Bosch house, Bosch is drinking and waiting for a proper time to make the call to Siobhan. He informs her that he found Finbar, and it is over. Bosch says if she is ever back in LA to look him up. Maddie stops by and they talk on the deck. Maddie wants to know what happened and Bosch says that Finbar received his justice, but not by Bosch’s hands.

Food for thought: How did Bosch and Gurbizs get back to Los Angeles?
