Refresh your memory of Bosch: Legacy

  • After getting advice from Harry, Maddie confronts Vasquez about her nephew’s involvement in the follow-home robberies.
  • Vasquez gave her nephew, Albert, a chance to come clean. However, he said he was not involved at all.
  • Jimmy Robertson was investigating the death of a Juan Doe, which he connected to narcotics.
  • Jade Quinn helped Mo obtain a federal sealed document on Finbar McShane. Finbar had an accomplice, an intelligence asset was dismissed.
  • Albert Torres met with a man to sell some of the stolen merchandise he had tucked away at his great-grandfather’s nursing home.
  • Lopez helps Bosch obtain a key card that Juan Doe had stored inside his sock. Mo connected the key card to a hotel in Lancaster.
  • DNA analysis showed that someone with the same gun killed both Jimmy and Juan Doe. Bosch knows it was sicarios who targeted and killed Jimmy Robertson.

Gruesome introduction to Humberto Zorrillo

Do not show up late:

At the start of Bosch: Legacy season 3 episode 8, we see a bunch of people loading into a van. Standing by the vehicle is Humberto Zorrillo, played by Manuel Uriza, who we will learn more about as the episode continues. A man shows up late and pleads with Zorrillo to allow him to continue working. Zorrillo assures him saying this is just his first week, and he will get used to the schedule. Upon arriving at the warehouse, Zorrillo attacks the man who was late in front of everyone. Zorrillo even has the man put his mouth on a crowbar and smash his face into it. It was a warning to everyone to ensure they all arrive at the proper time in the future.

The operation:

The men working for Zorrillo take drugs out of hiding places in automobiles and transfer them into smaller containers. The containers resemble those used by United Chemical later in the episode. Zorrillo oversees the operation and receives a call from an unknown individual. The caller states that the case against Perra has not yet proceeded and warns that the longer it takes, the more likely it is to implicate them.

Diego

Honey and Stallworth hondle over Diego Perra:

Chandler updates Stallworth about the bullets with unknown DNA from inside the murder weapon. Stallworth believes the new information would exonerate his client, but Honey wants Diego off the streets. Instead, Roman suggests protective custody and time served in exchange for information on the man who killed Jimmy Robertson.

Trading information for leniency:

With his lawyer present, Diego Perra confesses his sins to Pike, Bowers, and Chandler. He claims to have only robbed multiple food trucks but never shot or killed anyone. Perra says, “They tell the owners they have to pay for protection or else. I was the ‘or else’.” Diego replies “El Fuerte” (Spanish for “The Strong”‘) when asked who they were. Perra goes on to say that El Fuerte ordered him to stay away from Las Palmas the night Robertson was killed. He claims the man who ordered him to stand down was a man known as “The Pope”. Perra claims to not know the real name of “The Pope”, but after Honey speaks to him, he volunteers to help with a composite drawing.

Composite sketch:

Diego works with a sketch artist to show what “The Pope” looks like. As they work, Chandler mentions to Pike and Bowers that if the sketch proves worthwhile, they will need someone with intelligence for the U.S. and Mexico. Honey has someone in mind, Bosch’s ally Charlie Hovan.

Background on Zorrillo

Charlie Hovan informs Chandler and the CAPOS about Humberto Zorrillo, also known as “The Pope”. Zorrillo is a top-level comandante in the El Fuerte cartel. He arrived to the U.S. in 2019 but has not hit their radar until now.

Tattoos:

Chandler examines the photos taken of Diego Perra after his arrest, including one of Perra’s tattoos on his wrist. She compares the tattoo on Perra’s wrist with a tattoo on Humberto Zorrillo’s wrist and notices they are different. Honey calls Bosch to have him look over the two photos to see if he sees what she sees. He does, and says the tattoo was the barrel of an AK, not a cross. They decide at the same time that Zorrillo is the man who killed Jimmy.

What is waiting in Lancaster?

Coltrane and Sam:

Sam, played by Cora Welliver, stops by Harry Bosch’s house to take Coltrane for a walk. She sees the photos from the murder book on Jimmy Robertson and asks Bosch if they had already caught the guy that did it. Bosch says they caught a guy, not the right guy.

Trace analysis:

Doctor Ava Marion determines that the crystals under Juan Doe’s fingernails are a compound of sodium phosphate and chlorine. The combination is not native to Southern California. She explains that the compounds work together to kill algae. Marion tells Bosch there is only one company that makes it, United Chemical. United Chemical has two locations, one in Modesto and another in Lancaster. Juan Doe stayed at a cheap hotel in Lancaster, so Bosch feels it is time to get out to Lancaster and look around. Bosch offers a ride to Lopez who helped Bosch obtain the knowledge of United Chemical.

Bosch and Lopez meet the Deputy Garrity:

As Mo sits outside the hotel Juan Doe stayed at, Bosch and Lopez enter the Lancaster Station and make the acquaintance of Sheriff’s Deputy Jack Garrity. They ask Garrity why Robertson contacted him about United Chemical. Garrity calls a contact at United Chemical to see if Bosch and Lopez can get a tour of the plant. During the tour Zorrillo spots Bosch and Lopez with Garrity.

Garrity meets with Zorrillo:

Zorrillo tells Garrity that, with body count rising, he may need to relocate the business. Garrity says that if the operation moves to a new location, Zorrillo will have to find a new law enforcement officer to cooperate with his crimes. Zorrillo says that men like Garrity are not hard to find. Garrity exits the truck and plants a GPS tracker under Zorrillo’s truck.

A dirty play by Garrity:

Garrity calls RHD Captain Rick Seals to inform him that Detective Lopez and Bosch are investigating the Juan Doe murder together.

Divide and conquer:

Bosch and Lopez show the picture of Juan Doe to a hotel staffer attempting to see if he knows Juan Doe’s real name or any information about him. Lopez receives a call from Captain Seals, who requests that Lopez meet with Chief Hughes in her office. Bosch tells Lopez to go because he is familiar with that particular call. Harry realizes that as soon as they started asking questions, Lopez gets summoned. Bosch says he will stick around the hotel to continue asking staff questions. Mo should head to United Chemical to observe. At United Chemical, Mo gets photos of Zorrillo and his workers.

Juan Doe’s hotel room:

Bosch talks with Andrea, a maid at the hotel, and gets some information. Juan Doe stayed there a couple of months back and then disappeared. Other residents said that something bad must have happened to him. Afterward, on two occasions, four men tossed the room where Juan Doe stayed, looking for something. It was obvious that they did not find anything because they left the room angry and empty handed. Bosch asks Andrea if anyone called the police or if she knows Garrity. Suddenly, Andrea insists that she has already said too much.

Lopez and Chief Hughes:

In Chief Hughes’ office, Lopez is a bit nervous, and Hughes notices his unease. Lopez informs her that he has been reviewing Jimmy’s cases to see if there are any clues to work says he has not found any yet. Hughes directly asks Lopez exactly what he has been working on with Harry Bosch.

Drawing is Zorrillo:

Mo shows Bosch the pictures he has taken outside of United Chemical and Bosch points out the man he knows is Zorrillo. Bosch tells Mo what he has learned from Andrea. He bets that Juan Doe was skimming black ice, got caught, and ended up dead as a result. Bosch and Mo look through Juan Doe’s room and tucked inside a corner of the box spring, Bosch finds a baggie of black ice. Harry calls Garrity to inform him of the discovery in Juan Doe’s hotel room. Bosch does not trust Garrity and therefore assumes that Zorrillo will show up instead to collect the black ice.

Zorrillo does indeed show up later on with Mo positioned as a lookout in a hotel room opposite of Bosch who is waiting in the room where Juan Doe had stayed. Zorrillo slowly makes his way to room 217, and just as he gets to the door of the room, he backs away and leaves. Bosch was just inside the doorway with his gun trained on the entryway.

Bosch seeks assistance with finding Finbar:

Harry Bosch invites Ken Gurbizs over to his house and asks him for help in finding Finbar McShane. Bosch hands Gurbizs the file on William Jurgenson, who might have helped Finbar flee. The file was the one Jade Quinn obtained for Mo. Jurgenson used to specialize in assisting people to navigate and exit complex situations. Bosch says a line to Gurbizs, “Think you could flex those 18 Fox skills?”, which is Army talk for what Gurbizs was known for in the Army. Bosch asks Ken if he is up for another op together, and Gurbizs says he is.

Crime Does Not Pay:

Vasquez comes clean:

After speaking with Maddie, Vasquez meets with Sergeant Edgewood and Detective Morrison to inform them of everything she has done to keep her nephew safe. She also tells them about the stash of stolen jewelry located in her grandfather’s nursing home room. Reina says that she knows LAPD has to take Albert into custody, but she wants to make sure police do not harm him in the process. When asked by Detective Morrison if Reina’s sister would help bring down Albert. Vasquez says her sister, Mari, will not set up her son. Morrison says that Vasquez can be an “asset” and has a plan for picking up Albert.

Victoria takes matters into her own hands:

Victoria tells her parents that she is in trouble and needs their help. Is this where she lays the groundwork for Albert and Nestor forcing her to participate in the robberies?

Morrison’s plan:

Detective Morrison fakes a call to Albert, posing as Michael Shaw, an assistant manager at Coventry, where Albert’s great-grandfather resides. Morrison tells Albert that a pipe burst at Coventry, and they need to move some residents, including his great-grandfather. He tells Albert that Mr. Vasquez was upset when orderlies tried to move him. He hopes Albert can be of assistance.

Albert grows suspicious and calls his great-grandfather to ask if he is okay and if he needs anything. Mr. Vasquez has no idea what Albert is talking about. Albert and Nestor discuss the next steps.

Writer’s Note: Detective Morrison did not plan this well. T? They should have realized that Albert might try to call or contact him his great-grandfather.

Since Albert is a no-show, Vasquez suggests they use an Air Tag to track the loot. Reina goes inside to install the tracker, but the stash is gone. The photo from the refrigerator is in the spot where the stash used to be. On the back of the image is, “Say hi to your auntie for me.” Victoria got there first and has absconded with the goods.

The next step:

Albert and Nestor visit Slippery Sam to ask for more time to get the stolen merchandise to him for selling. Sam tells them that Albert’s girlfriend called and scheduled a meeting for the following morning.

Tracking the robbery crew:

Morrison, Edgewood, Vasquez, and Maddie all discuss what Victoria’s next moves could be after getting to the stash before Albert. Victoria’s GPS indicates she is at her parents’ house. Nestor and Albert have gone offline. Vasquez mentions a plan to speak with Victoria’s parents because Victoria would not leave town without some means of contact. Upon speaking with Victoria’s parents, they give Vasquez a pager with Victoria’s number already programmed into it.

Maddie gets a ping on Victoria’s burner phone. She shows the rest of the team that the GPS has her location at La Zona Rosa in downtown. The CRU team organizes posts for the officers, and Morrison tells Vasquez that she will be on the perimeter, and he will bring Albert in safely.

La Zona Rosa:

With the CRU crew posted at various locations around La Zona Rosa, all the crew members check in. Maddie tries to reassure Vasquez that with Victoria betraying Albert, she doubts Albertis there. However, inside, Slippery Sam examines the merchandise and quotes a price to Victoria. She does not like the initial offer and tries to haggle for a slightly higher price. At that point, Nestor and Albert arrive. Albert appears to take the lead. Morrison calls for an airship to their location for extra surveillance. Sam leaves a duffle bag of cash on a table and slips out a side exit carrying a duffle bag with the merchandise.

Victoria, Albert, and Nestor turn on each other. Victoria spills that Albert’s aunt is a cop and was on to them from the start. This rattles Nestor, but even more so is the helicopter that they hear over the club. Nestor grabs the duffle bag of money and makes a run out of the front of La Zona Rosa. Three squad cars cut off his path and they order him to drop the gun. Instead, he turns the gun in their direction, and the officers shoot him multiple times.

Catching Victoria and Albert:

Before knowing who CRU has shot and killed, Vasquez looks impatient and on the verge of tears. After hearing that it was Nestor Gomez who CRU shot and killed, a look of relief floods her face. Vasquez’s relief is short-lived as a moment later, Victoria and Albert kde a run for it as well. They run right into Maddie and Vasquez’s location on the perimeter. Maddie chases down Victoria and catches her. Vasquez chases Albert right up to a locked chain-link fence. Albert surrenders, and Reina cuffs her nephew in one of the more heartbreaking scenes in Bosch: Legacy.
