May kicks off with great news for Bosch: Legacy fans.

On May 1, 2023, Amazon Freevee released news for Bosch: Legacy and a casting confirmation that has Bosch fans feeling jazzy. The free ad-supported streaming service announced a third season renewal for the popular Bosch spinoff. This comes in advance of season 2, which is slated for a fall release. There is also an update on one of the developing projects in the Connelly universe. Read on for more details.

Bosch: Legacy fans can rest assured that there is more  on the way beyond the highly anticipated second season.

“The story of Harry Bosch has evolved over the years, and his journey is far from over. This renewal of Bosch: Legacy is a testament to the enduring power of the world Michael Connelly built. We look forward to giving Bosch fandom the next chapter for these beloved characters.” –  Lauren Anderson, head of AVOD Originals, unscripted, and targeted programming, Amazon Studios.

Returns

The big announcement also included confirmations of returning characters to the series. Viewers became very attached to the characters in Harry’s world in the original Bosch series. So, it is only fitting, plus very rewarding, to see them pop up in Harry’s life as he adjusts to working as a private investigator.

Favorites like Crate and Barrel (played by Gregory Scott Cummins and Troy Evans, respectively) are among many returning characters along with Sgt. “Mank” Mankiewicz (Scott Klace). Entering the Bosch: Legacy format for the first time will be former Hollywood Divsion partners Det. Rondell Pierce (DaJuan Johnson) and Det. Christina Vega (Jacqueline Obradors).

Of course, the last time we saw Vega and Pierce, they had been reassigned to new jobs. Pierce was less than thrilled to be added to the graveyard shift commonly referred to as the “late show”. Vega was promoted to RHD partnering with none other than J. Edgar, Harry’s longtime partner.

Speaking of J. Edgar, the press release also confirmed that Jamie Hector is planned to return not only for Bosch: Legacy S2, but also for the Untitled J. Edgar project still in development at Fabel Entertainment. Of course, no one imagined the idea of anyone else playing J. Edgar, but it’s always good to know that the original actor is officially part of the plan as the project continues to develop.

Denise Sanchez as Officer Reina Vasquez and Stephen Chang as Mo are officially back for S2 as well. I certainly cannot imagine the Bosch: Legacy world without them!

What’s in store?

We learned a few things about what’s in store for the season 2 plotline.

It should be no secret that there will be a search for Maddie. Words cannot describe the fear on Harry’s face when he finds a cut in the screen of her bedroom window with Maddie nowhere in sight at the end of season 1. Talk about a cliffhanger!

Amazon Freevee also shared that Honey and Harry will be working together to find a killer that may be targeting them as well. It’s good to hear of these two working on the same side of things again, especially after the strain on their relationship at the end of season 1. Harry was not happy about Honey involving Maddie in the wrongful death suit against the LAPD, even just the use of her bodycam footage. Harry and Honey have a long history of antagonizing one another, but I think they are at their best when they collaborate for justice.

More Carl Rogers? Anyone who watched season 1 knows Carl is not coming back. But it sounds like his murder investigation will find its way into the plot. We speculated on the Everybody Counts Podcast about whether this particular story would continue in some fashion. It seemed too easy for Harry and Honey to simply walk away from their knowledge surrounding the murder. Sure enough, it was announced that the FBI has Harry and Honey on their radar in season 2.

Excitement continues to build for Bosch: Legacy season 2 and other developing projects in Connelly’s universe of compelling characters.
