Blindspot season 3 started Friday October 27. It’s been over 5 months since season 2 ended, and if you need a refresher, keep reading. This article contains spoilers for the entirety of seasons 1 and 2, and at the very end there will be some small hints about the first two episodes of season 3. You’ve been warned. If you’ve never watched Blindspot and want a quick intro to what the show is about, you can read my Blindspot series review.
The show’s complicated plots may be hard to remember. While all of the episodes are entertaining, you probably don’t have to know or remember every detail about the first two seasons in order to understand and enjoy season 3.
What Happened in Season 2 of Blindspot
The main story arc in season 2 involved Sandstorm, the secret terrorist organization with the ultimate goal of wiping out the US government in order to replace it with new members, thus ridding the country of what the group sees as massive government corruption.
More of Jane’s past is revealed as part of this plotline, as she “meets” her brother, Roman, and their adoptive mother, Shepherd, who is the head of Sandstorm. Jane plays double-agent for a time, pretending to be on board with Sandstorm’s mission; the FBI has a mole; a nuclear bomb almost obliterates Washington, D.C., but Kurt and the team save the day in the end. Shepherd is killed but Roman gets away, creating a convenient way to end this story line while providing a link to the next one.
The very end of the last episode of season 2 shows a team celebration party at Kurt’s apartment, but it ends prematurely when the other team members realize that Jane and Kurt want to be alone. They all quickly leave and Jane and Kurt finally have their long-overdue romantic moment.
We then see a sneak peek of Blindspot season 3: Jane is solo climbing a remote rocky cliff. She reaches the top and is then presumably in some remote mountain outpost where she’s drinking tea, still alone. An Asian woman knocks on her door and tells her she has a visitor, and it’s Kurt, who’s very glad to have finally found her.
What’s up with Jane and Kurt?
In season 1, Kurt believed Jane’s true identity was Taylor Shaw, a childhood friend who mysteriously disappeared. Jane’s appearance brought up complicated memories and emotions in Kurt. At one point in the season, Jane and Kurt kissed, but the season ended with him angry at her for lying about being Taylor. She had a good reason to lie, but Kurt didn’t want to even hear her explanation.
Season 2 brought a couple of new developments. Kurt briefly renewed a relationship with ex-girlfriend Allison Knight. They broke up again, but a few months later she visited him to reveal that she was pregnant with his child. At the end of season 2, she was living in Colorado and soon to give birth, and Kurt, while not romantically involved with her, clearly desired to be part of the child’s life. Kurt and Jane mended fences professionally, and there was clearly personal chemistry between them but circumstances keep that from developing until the very end of the season.
During much of Season 2, Kurt was romantically involved with Nas Kamal, an NSA agent who has been trying to hunt down Sandstorm for years. She became part of the team for most of season 2 but the romance doesn’t last.
The Team
The FBI team that forms the focus of Blindspot has had many members who have come and gone. At the beginning, Kurt was just a team member, but he became team leader when the original leader, Mayfair, was murdered at the end of season 1. I’m going to focus on the team members who are moving forward into season 3 with Jane and Kurt.
Tasha Zapata is a former member of the NYPD who joined the FBI. She had a tough childhood which resulted in a gambling addiction which she seems to have overcome. She has a close friendship with Edgar Reade, who is her partner on a lot of the team’s missions.
Edgar Reade was originally skeptical of Jane and unwilling to have her join the team. He had a romantic relationship with Kurt’s sister in season 1. In season 2 it’s revealed that he was the victim of child molestation at the hands of his football coach but repressed the memories until another victim exposed the coach. Reade later was present while the coach died by bleeding out, and Reade did not call for help, a fact he later confessed to Zapata who has kept his secret.
Patterson may be my favorite character on the show. Surely this geeky genius has a first name, but after consulting 3 sources, including NBC.com, I gave up trying to find it. She was head of the FBI’s Forensic Science Unit and is tasked with analyzing and decrypting Jane’s mysterious tatoos in season 1. It’s unclear if she’s trained for field work, but she managed to get dragged into it many times and always managed to hold her own. Poor Patterson has had a very unlucky love life. Her first boyfriend on the show is killed after the two of them try to solve one of the tatoo puzzles on their own. In season 2, she has a romantic relationship with a team member who turns out to be the mole who is really working for Sandstorm; that doesn’t end well, either.
Blindspot Season 3 -Eighteen Months Later
Season 3 takes place 18 months after the end of season 2. Stop reading now if you want to watch the first episode of season 3 without knowing anything more than that. I’m not going to spoil the episode for you, I’m just going to give you some hints if you want to get a clue what Blindspot season 3 is going to be about.
The team seperates in the time since we last saw them. They explain what they’ve all been up to, so I won’t give that away here. Roman is still alive and figures prominently in episode 1, and it seems that he will be an important part of this season’s plot. Jane’s hair has grown long and she gets some mysterious new tatoos. There are new team dynamics and some new mysteries.
A lot has happened to our team members since the ending of season 2 and they have some catching up to do. As always, Jane is the mysterious one who has some surprises in store regarding where she’s been for the last year. And Roman’s plans and motives are still very much unclear.
After watching episodes 1 and 2 of season 3, I’m confident that Blindspot season 3 may be an even wilder ride than season 2. And I’m looking forward to it. You can watch Blindspot on NBC on Fridays at 8 p.m. Seasons 1 and 2 are available on Hulu.
