Wizard World Cleveland: ‘Outlander’s’ Caitriona Balfe

March 9, 2020 by Beth Shiller 7 Comments

Take a moment to share:

Outlander‘s Caitriona Balfe, aka Claire Randall/ Fraser, held a fireside chat at Wizard World Cleveland when she spoke to fans about the show.

The cast of Outlander has been blessed with this show and are truly grateful for the experience.

“I mean, it’s changed my life completely. But I think what I really have recognized is the power of storytelling, to connect people. And that’s been one of the most amazing things about getting this job and being part of this incredible world that Diana (Gabaldon) created,” said Balfe. I mean, we just get to ride her (Diana) coattails and be part a of this and it’s everywhere. People who are in love with this story, in love with these characters and that’s amazing. I’m very aware that I’m in a place of privilege because that doesn’t happen very often.”

Cast mates Lacroix and Rankin completely agree.

So, we’re now in season five, what’s in store for Claire.
“I think last season was very traditionary and I don’t think we sort of found our footing as much and I think that’s really sort of settled this season and it’s also because the Fraser’s have really settled. What I love about the season for Claire is that she has her beautiful moments. She has her incredible husband. She has a wonderful daughter, her son-in-law, you know, this extended family and she has her surgery. This is something she didn’t really have last season. She got to be a healer, in times of emergency do some of her work, but now she’s actually got her established surgery and I think that for Claire, it just feels, this season, that she’s very fulfilled. And there’s some bad things coming because we all know… but it’s just been really lovely to see her use every side of herself, you know, be a wife a lover and mother and a surgeon, or doctor.”

Balfe did share a fun story from season 5 episode 3. It involved some damn goats!

“I think we’ve alluded to this, but like so, episode three, that just came out, those damn goats. I mean it was quite spectacular. We would have the goats in this little living room and we’ll finish off Friday they’d be like ‘all right, we’re ready to go.’ The minutes they would say action- not just peeing, there were just puddles and pallets everywhere. And one of the props guys will have to come in and sweep it all away but that doesn’t really clean it. Then we’d go again and they would do the same thing and I mean, I felt sorry for the goats but I felt sorrier for Sam and I because we were just gagging. And then the next day we did the scene where we have to lie down and sleep and I was like ‘who cleaned this floor? and how good is your cleaning skills?'”

We tried really hard to get Balfe to reveal more about what’s coming up on season 5.

“We’re going to see some fun stuff this season. I can’t really say too much about what’s coming up but actually in book five, the stories are so spread out… and when you broke down Claire’s story, there wasn’t so much for her to do and in season five, and it was something that we solved with the writers at the very beginning, because it’s like, ‘Okay, what am I going to be doing this season?’ and I’m glad that they got to find a lot little moments like that to be able to really allow Claire to invest in that side of her life properly.”

It has been announced that there”s going to be a sixth season and according to Balfe, they should begin shooting in late April.

“I haven’t seen any scripts yet. I’m hoping to see some soon,” Balfe said, adding that the sixth book is really strong. “So I’m excited. There’s some really good stuff coming up.”

Outlander airs Sunday nights on Starz.
