Sweet Magnolias season 3 trailer offers a look back as friends move forward.

Netflix original series Sweet Magnolias returns July 20th for season 3. The trailer for the new season includes a mix of old and new footage from the popular series. The opening seconds of dialogue make mention of both past and present with phrases like “new relationships and new challenges” and “the beauty of old friends”. The peek at season 3 suggests that new decisions are informed by the past, the good and the bad.

Where we were

We are reminded of the scenarios that Helen, Dana Sue and Maddie find themselves in at the close of season 2. Helen is blindsided by a surprise marriage proposal from estranged first love Ryan Wingate. Dana Sue has taken a leap of faith by welcoming Ronnie back into her life. Maddie sees a different side of Cal when he throws a punch at an overzealous fan charging toward her.

We see other characters encountering new situations as well. New mom Noreen has chosen to raise Rebecca without Bill. Annie and Jackson have agreed to see one another in secret despite the objections of Mary Vaughn. Ty finds himself on the heels of a life-changing decision to let baseball go. Meanwhile, Isaac is adjusting to the reveal that his biological parents are Peggy and Bill. Added to the mix is also the fact that Cal’s coaching and teaching position has been terminated.

Finally, let us not forget the mystery woman introduced at the end of Sweet Magnolias season 2. She appears to be a menace that has it out for Dana Sue. But why?

Where we might be

Promotional trailers can be tricky to dissect. But it is always fun to speculate on what the new season may bring.

The season 3 sneak peek suggests a struggle for Cal in the aftermath of slugging Stu at Sullivan’s. Will the foundation he has built with Maddie be at risk or will that foundation serve the couple in navigating the fallout? Dana Sue and Ronnie appear to be moving forward with their reconciliation. There are hugs, smiles and a general feeling that, while it may not be easy, it is very much worthwhile. Then again, the mystery woman certainly appears to be a stressor in their lives. Is this woman behind the horrific damage shown to the Sullivan’s restaurant kitchen?

We hear a voiceover of Helen expressing feelings for both Erik and Ryan. Is there a hint of Helen giving Ryan a chance? What would this mean for Erik? And how is Helen’s reproductive journey impacted by the re-emergence of Ryan? Personally, I want us to protect Erik at all costs. This dear man has been doling out support to so many over the last 2 seasons.

We suspect that Noreen is feeling the weight of being a new mother and trying to find her place in Serenity apart from Bill. Baby Rebecca is a cutie and I hope we get some sweet baby scenes throughout season 3. Speaking of sweet, will Annie continue to be “sweet” on Jackson now that their relationship is forbidden by Mary Vaughn? Images of Annie with Ty give the “Tynnie” shippers some hope, while a sighting of him with a new girl make us wonder. Finally, blink and you will miss it, but we see a closing shot of Annie, Lily and Cece looking friendly.

Soon enough

With the release of season 3 only a few weeks away, we can count on getting some answers soon. Fans cannot wait to step back into Serenity and meet up with all of our favorite characters again. With so much at stake, there is sure to be a mix of excitement and trepidation about our characters circumstances. Regardless, we have to find out where everyone lands.

Thank goodness for best friends! Who will be watching with you? All ten episodes, each an hour in length, will be available starting July 20th on Netflix. Let us know what you think the trailer reveals.
