It’s all “relative”
Family is a big part of Serenity.

Dana Sue and Ronnie share their desire to throw an epic carnival-themed 16th birthday party for Annie. Annie is a little taken aback at the idea of something so big.
Ty skips his physical therapy session after learning from Lily that people are gossiping about Cal throwing a punch at Sullivan’s. Instead of going to therapy, he confronts Cal about embarrassing and hurting his mom. Cal apologizes and explains that he is trying to make changes. Ty is not satisfied and leaves angry.
Bill arrives to Maddie’s house ready to take Ty to a re-scheduled therapy appointment. Bill and Ty talk about the difficulty of finding a new path after giving up baseball. His day reminds Ty that you cannot run away from hard things. Bill realizes he sounds hypocritical and ensures Ty that he is trying to do better.
At the advice of Bill, Maddie digs deeper with Ty to see what else is wrong. Ty tells her that he confronted Cal. They talk about apologies and what makes them sincere. Maddie believes that if people combine effort to change with a verbal apology, it makes the apology valid. She also reminds Ty that he does not have to fight her battles for her. Mom and son hug.
Isaac and Peggy are still reeling from the discovery that they are biologically mother and son. Isaac does not want to engage with Bill at this time. Peggy understands. They decide to approach their relationship as friends and enjoy getting to know each other.
Counseling Corner
There is plenty of support and good advice to go around in Serenity.
Isaac notices Erik being distant in the kitchen. He asks Erik what is wrong. Erik confides that Helen broke things off with him. Later, the two friends sit together at the bar after work. Erik shares that he is struggling and had hoped he would have started feeling at least a little better.
Annie delivers lunch to Helen at her home office. She is also seeking her godmother’s advice. Annie is feeling some discomfort with the elaborate plans her parents suggest for her birthday. She is happy with how her family is all living under the same roof again and does not want the money to change things. Helen counsels her saying that money can change people if they allow it to be the most important thing in their lives. On the contrary, the most important thing to Ronnie and Dana Sue is Annie. She encourages Annie to be open with her parents about the birthday planning.
Cal meets Trotter for basketball and is surprised to see Harlan and Erik there as well. What Cal fears might be an intervention ends up being an affirmation of friendship. This time Erik is the one offering support along with Trotter and Harlan. The guys tell Cal that he does not have to go through this time of self-exploration alone.
Romance Review
Cal proposes a 2-week friends only period for Maddie and him. There will be an embargo on physical contact while they explore a friendship together. Maddie agrees. There are some funny close calls where they would naturally hold hands or lean if for a kiss, but they stop themselves.
Jackson and Annie have another clandestine meeting in the cemetery. They talk about her birthday and Jackson shares all the ways he would like to make it special for her.
When Kyle finally convinces Ty to watch Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, Ty seems to identify with the Mercutio character. Is this some sort of commentary on how he feels about Jackson and Annie? Hmm . . .
Ronnie and Dana Sue continue navigating life under the same roof again. Ronnie forgets he needs to be out of the house for Margarita Night and his quick escape makes the Sweet Magnolias chuckle.
Helen is devastated that Erik is stepping away from her completely as she explores the idea of a life with Ryan. She is so conflicted that she even ignores Ryan’s knock at her door one evening. Finally, she tells Ryan that she cannot say “yes” yet. She will consider the proposal if he will make Serenity his permanent home to be with her. He does not take long to agree to the condition but rather quickly points out that he will have to give up his job. Helen points out that both of them have to make sacrifices.
Town Council Notes

Mystery Musings
Sometimes the biggest mysteries are people’s intentions.
Maddie seems a little skeptical about Bill’s growing involvement with the kids. Is he sincere about his decision to be a better father to his children?
There’s no sign of Kathy this episode. I have to wonder what she’s up to.
Ryan delivers another box from Ms. Frances. The latest one is for Paula and is marked urgent. Paula welcomes the box but gives Ryan a warning about not hurting Helen again. I wonder what Paula will think when she hears that Ryan has agreed to make Serenity his home. His track record with sticking around is not great. Will he see it through?
We are left wondering what Annie will request for her birthday. Her parents want to go big, but Annie seems to be thinking smaller. Carnival or the aquarium, what might it be? And how can Jackson make Annie’s birthday special when he is not even supposed to be with her?
