SCAD TVfest: Creatives discuss The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy

SCAD TVfest 2024 hosts screening and panel for The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy.

The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) hosts SCAD TVfest, which brings together students, industry talent and experts, plus the general public, for a rich and curated offering of events celebrating television. The festival kicked off on February 7 with a screening of Prime Video’s new animated series The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy. A panel with Cirocco Dunlap (creator, showrunner, and executive producer) and Robin Eisenberg (production designer and co-producer) followed. The Q&A session was moderated by Kimberly Roots of TVLine.

Attendees were pleased to hear that The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy, which premieres February 23 on Prime Video, will also be coming back for a second season. Creatives Cirocco and Eisenberg shared details about bringing the vivid animation to life.

Coming to Life

Showrunner Cirocco Dunlap confirmed that the story always revolved around a hospital. But interestingly, the story originally involved time travel. The time travel element did not move forward, but an opportunity to talk about anxiety followed. Having a history with live action, creator Cirocco was intrigued with the amount of control afforded with animation. Having worked primarily solo in the past, production designer Robin Eisenberg talked about the new experience of working with a large team of people.

Both Robin and Cirocco enjoyed watching the evolution of the show’s characters and seeing them come to life. Cirocco spoke highly of the designers who each provide a special component of the animation from line drawing to background painting and all the levels that come together. We learned about animation prop designers who add details like decor to the environment just as you would expect in a live action story. Robin shared her specific desire for “the world to look lived in”. Cirocco referred to details like scratches on the walls that were used to achieve this goal.

Teamwork

The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy boasts an impressive cast of voice actors including Keke Palmer, Stephanie Hsu, Maya Rudolph, Natasha Lyonne, Kieran Culkin and more. Cirocco had fun contrasting Kieran Culkin’s Emmy winning role on Succession with voicing an empath and “bird alien going through puberty”. Behind the scenes, Cirocco and Robin are pleased to have a team composed of five female and gender queer writers bringing the story to life.

The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy arrives to Prime Video on February 23. Tune in to meet doctors Sleech (Keke Palmer) and Klak (Stephanie Hsu) as they practice medicine on fellow aliens with their own brand of rules.

SCAD, dubbed “The University for Creative Careers” has a global presence with over 17,000 students studying across 100 different degree programs including both undergraduate and graduate studies. Learn more about the university at SCAD’s website.
