So many shows, so many premieres!
If you’re anything like me, you have a list of premiere dates to look out for and may have to set up calendar reminders. I watch many shows during the year, but fall is always the best time for TV season premieres. The list goes up and down over the years, depending on which new shows might strike my fancy. Or, unfortunately, the list may go down if I lose interest or if a show I like is canceled. It’s hard to keep all the shows in my mind during the off-season. But it’s like opening a Christmas present early when I see the commercials for them coming back.
There is no real rhyme or reason why a new show might click in my head as a potential new show to add. Most of the time, it’s because I see an actor attached to the project or show that I like. Other times, it might be the plot, storyline, premise, or favorite genre. My favorite genres must be comedy or action first, followed by drama, science fiction, mystery, and thriller. If a show has a combination of those genres, it will be at the top of my list. And, of course, if a show is based on a book series, I will usually want to check it out.
Mike’s show picks
But let’s not get too far off track. Let’s start on the list of shows I’ll watch this fall/winter. A few shows have already premiered, which I will begin with on the list. The list of favorites is in order by the premiere date. That way, it might help you know if a show on your list will premiere. As for my favorites for this fall, keep reading.
Returning Shows
Only Murders in the Building: Hulu/DisneyPlus
Season 4 premiered on August 27th.
Only Murders stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. The show started in 2021, and if you’re into murder mysteries, comedy, and drama, then this would be right up your alley. Each episode is a fun whodunit that never gets figured out until the last couple of episodes. Only Murders is a week-to-week release. And I’ve enjoyed watching that way, with the mystery of who the murderer is being strung out over the season. Also, it’s a nice change instead of binging a whole season at once.
Tulsa King: Paramount+
The 2nd season premiered on September 15th.
Tulsa King is a crime, drama, and comedy that stars Sylvester Stallone, who plays a New York mafia capo, Dwight “The General” Manfredi. After being released from prison after serving 25 years for a murder. He gets banished to Oklahoma to set up shop, but it’s more of a demotion. Taylor Sheridan, known from Wind River and Sicaro, created the show. Terence Winter is also involved in the show and is known for writing as an executive producer on The Sopranos and making the HBO show Boardwalk Empire. Winter was the showrunner in season 1 but is now the head writer.
From: MGM+
Season 3 premiered on September 22nd.
Okay, I got hooked on this show just after Prime Video made the first season available for free. The show had been suggested by fellow So Many Shows member Tracey. From the first episode, I got hooked in the first 5 minutes into the first episode. From blends many genres into it, it’s a science fiction, horror, mystery, and drama show created by John Griffin. It takes place in a small town, in which the residents of the city get there in mysterious ways. And once there, they aren’t able to leave.
Each town resident traveled from different places around the United States. The only thing that all the residents have in common is that they all came across a downed tree blocking the road they were on. Near the downed tree are many crows, and I am still trying to determine if it relates to what is happening. The people must survive nocturnal creatures that come around at night trying to get into homes or catch people outside their houses. And it never ends well for the people who let the creatures in their houses or get caught by them.
Abbott Elementary: ABC
Season 4 premiers on October 9th.
Abbott Elementary is another show recommended to me by the So Many Shows crew. And what a show to add to my list last year! I started watching it when it was mostly the way through the third season. Once again, hooked from the start, it’s like the So Many Shows crew knows my tastes in television shows. Abbott Elementary is a sitcom that blends comedy, drama, and mockumentary. So, it’s like The Office, only in a school setting. The show stars Quinta Brunson, Tyler James Williams, Lisa Ann Walter, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Janelle James.
The two main characters, Janine Teagues and Gregory Eddie have had this “will they, won’t they” since the first episode. And at the end of season 3, we see them kiss, and Gregory has the film crew leave, and he closes the door.
Tracker: CBS/Paramount Plus
2nd season premiers on October 13th.
If you’ve surfed through the So Many Shows website, you will see that Tracey and I are fans of Tracker. The show stars Justin Hartley as Colter Shaw, and the show is based on Jeffrey Deaver’s Colter Shaw novels. The show follows Colter as he helps local law enforcement or random people track down and find their missing loved ones. He is known as a rewardist, like a bounty hunter, but he doesn’t go after bounties. But he also only collects money only if he is successful. Mostly, he tracks down missing persons or items lost or stolen for rewards.
The show also stars Fiona Rene, Abby McEnany, and Eric Graise. Jenson Ackles has guest starred as Colter’s brother, Russel. Also, guest starring in an episode was Justin’s real-life wife, Sofia Pernas. She is returning in season 2 as well, and plays Billie Matalon, another rewardist who seems to have also been involved with Colter.
NCIS: CBS
October 14th:
There are two NCIS shows I’m looking forward to watching this upcoming fall, both of which are tied in the same world. Those are the series premiere of NCIS: Origins and the 22nd season premiere of NCIS. I have been hit-and-miss with NCIS the last couple of seasons, but I hope to catch up over the next few weeks. NCIS: Origins is a new show centered around a younger Jethro Gibbs as he first joins NCIS. Austin Stowell is playing the younger Leroy Jethro Gibbs, and he has some big shoes to fill as Gibbs. Mark Harmon will also be a part of the show, mainly as a narrator. He will briefly appear in the first episode and be an executive producer.
Ghosts: CBS
Season 4 premieres October 17th.
This show has been a favorite of mine these past three-ish years. When I first saw the trailer for the show, I laughed out loud. Samantha first saw a ghost in her bathroom and screamed. The ghost screams, too, and runs through the bathroom door and leaves. Samantha tries to run through the door but smashes into it. Ghosts is a sitcom that stars Rose Mclver and Utkarsh Ambudkar as Samantha and Jay. The ghosts are played by Brandon Scott Jones, Rebecca Wisocky, Asher Grodman, Sheila Carrasco, Roman Zaragoza, Danielle Pinnock, Devan Chandler Long, and Richie Moriarty. Ghosts was adapted from the original British series of the same name.
Samantha gets the ability to see ghosts after a fall down a stairway in the house she inherited from her great-aunt. Jay and Samantha use the opportunity of the house to turn it into a bed and breakfast. Samantha’s great-aunt is one of the ghosts which inhabit the house. The ghosts that inhabit the house die on the property in different eras. The ghosts make the show fun to watch, each having different abilities. Out of all the ghosts my favorite has to be Thornfinn, he died on the property from a lightning strike to his helmet. He is one of the oldest ghosts from the Viking era and can manipulate electricity. None of the ghosts can leave the property. Each time they walk across the property line, they get turned around.
The Lincoln Lawyer: Netflix
The entire third season arrives on October 17th.
That’s right, Mickey Haller is riding onto our screens to take on one of his most challenging cases yet. And that says something about the cases he’s handled so far during the first two seasons. The Lincoln Lawyer was created for television by David E. Kelley and developed for television by Ted Humphrey based on Michael Connelly’s novels. The show stars Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Mickey Haller, a defense attorney who runs his law practice out of the back of his Lincoln. The third season is based on Michael Connelly’s book The Gods of Guilt, one of the best Haller novels.
The Lincoln Lawyer also stars Becki Newton, Angus Sampson, Jazz Raycole, and Yaya DaCosta. The showrunners are Dailyn Rodriguez and Ted Humphrey. The third season will have recurring guest stars such as Neve Campbell, Krista Warner, and Elliott Gould. At least this year, we get a total season drop with season 3. Last year, season 2 was released in two parts just over a month apart.
Season 2 ends on such a down note for Mickey when he finds out that a former client has been murdered. Glory Dayton, also known as Glory Days, helped him set an innocent client free. On top of that, his big client, Lisa Trammel, was found innocent of murdering Mitchell Bondurant. But she did kill her husband and buried him in the garden at her house/restaurant under the cilantro.
Stay tuned to So Many Shows, as Tracey and I will write episodic recaps. Also, stay tuned to the Lincoln Law Pod, where Jay, Tracey, Pete, and I recap our favorite moments from each episode.
Cobra Kai: Netflix
Season 6 Part 2 (Episodes 6-10) premiere moved up to November 15th.
If you read the Cobra Kai article that I posted on So Many Shows, you know this is a top favorite of mine. Here’s the link to that article.
This is part 2 of a three-part final season, but I’ve read that some spin-off shows are in the works. The characters who will be part of those have yet to be released. I can’t wait to see what happens in the Sekai Taikai tournament during this next batch of episodes. I don’t know how it will all work out for each dojo, but I know there will be no shortage of high-flying fight scenes.
New Shows
These are several new shows, and I look forward to checking out at least a few episodes to see if I can add them to the fold.
St. Denis Medical: (NBC) Premieres on November 12th.
Created by the team behind Superstore, this sitcom will follow an underfunded, understaffed hospital where doctors and nurses try their best to treat patients while maintaining their sanity.
Doctor Odyssey: (ABC) premiered September 26th.
As I mentioned at the start of this article, names are the first things I notice. This show stars Joshua Jackson (Fringe and The Mighty Ducks) as Max, an onboard doctor for a luxury cruise ship where he handles unique medical crises.
Agatha All Along: (Disney+) premiered on September 18th.
A spin-off of WandaVision, stars Kathryn Hahn as she reprises her role as Agatha Harkness.
The Penguin: (Max) started on September 19th.
Colin Farrell is reprising his character from The Batman, in which the events of this show take place following the 2022 film.
Brilliant Minds: (NBC) premiered on September 23rd.
Zachary Quinto returns to TV as Dr. Oliver Wolf. Wolf leads a team of physicians who explore the human brain while coping with their interpersonal relationships and mental health.
Cross: (Prime Video) full season drops on November 14th.
Cross stars Aldis Hodge, Isaiah Mustafa, and Juanita Jennings. Based on the Alex Cross novels written by James Patterson, the first season will consist of only eight episodes.
. . . and now on to selecting my favorites!
Mike’s Top Favorite Fall Shows:
1) The Lincoln Lawyer– I’ve been waiting since last summer to see what happens next with Mickey Haller and Associates.
2) From—I was immediately hooked by From, and this show fits well with my tastes.
3) Abbott Elementary—The whole “will they, won’t they” thing finally goes to the next level. But will that hamper the relationship?
4) Tracker—Colter Shaw will take more missing person cases. This is my favorite new series from last year.
5.Cobra Kai– Because of the cliffhanger Part 1 ending. I’ve been waiting to learn what happens with the Sekai Tekai tournament.
6) Ghosts– After the way that season 3 ended, Isaac gets pulled through a wall in the basement by another ghost he abandoned years before. But because he is one of the main ghosts, I believe he’ll be okay.
The top 6 listed here can be interchangeable at any given time. What shows are in your top 6?
