Change is not permanent. Running from our past can be a challenge, even if its for the greater good.
Courtroom Drama
Months away from the courtroom Annalise visits the Public Defender’s office to volunteer for a case. Broke, with pending litigation for the insurance money of her burned down home. Yet she has time to take a case with the Public defenders. Setting the ground work to benefit herself somehow… Virginia Cross (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), public defender reluctantly gives Annalise her former case that she lost years ago. Sending Ben Carter(Rene Moran) to prison for murdering his fiancée, Kim.
He insists he’s innocent and admits that Kim suffered from depression which he believes contributed to her death. In her interview with Ben, former gang member, he admits their relationship is not perfect. Confides in her that Madison (Kim’s daughter) is not his. Now that’s a motive to kill your fiancée! Annalise erases the interview and advises Ben not to bring this up during the trail.
Working her dream internship at Caplan & Gold, Michaela is visited by Laurel. I knew she would eventually help Laurel investigate her father. Michaela is who she is because of Annalise (whom she despises). I was right, after winning the Hell Bowl she picks fierce fellow female lawyer Teagan (Amirah Vann) to work under. Great power move for Michaela, she knows Teagan is working on the Antares account. Coincidence? This account is Laurels fathers confirming Michaela will help Laurel.
Double Cross Revelations
Conner is now a college dropout with a refund check of $32,000 dollars to play with. Laurel, gets an internship with Bonnie after Frank intervenes. In a surprising turn of the episode, Oliver sets Annalise up along with Bonnie and Nate. Remember that recording Annalise deleted?
Oliver doesn’t just retrieve Ben’s voicemail of his confession that Madison is not his. He hands it over to the DA who use it against Annalise. Furious she confronts Bonnie and Nate in the parking garage. Annalise physically tries to harm Bonnie. Nate physically intervened to end the disagreement just before it became deadly. Oh well, so much for my theories…
Knocked down, but not out, Annalise receives an envelope with video that exonerates her client. The tape shows the suicide of Kim. Case closed. Not so fast, she has other plans besides just freeing her client. She puts Virginia Cross on the stand who admits the Public Defender’s office is understaffed. It discloses they are also under paid. According to Virginia Cross, these reasons are why the tape is not located until many years later. The office cannot provide their clients with fair trails.
Yep, she admitted this in open court and on the record. Annalise has ulterior motives for turning on Virginia Cross. She never does anything without a plan.
After watching this episode, I’m left with three questions:
1. Will Annalise head up the Public Defender’s office
2. Will Michaela turn on Laurel
3. Why is Frank back
