Interview with Dark/Web Creator, Michael Nardelli
While on his way to his show’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Michael Nardelli, actor and co-creator of Amazon’s new show “Dark/Web”, took some time to chat with half of the Daley Review team. We talked about the show’s influences and themes, as well as a sneak-peek at what the future might hold if “Dark/Web” finds an audience. Posted below is an excerpt from that conversation. If you want the full experience (which DOES INCLUDE SPOILERS), then listen to the podcast!
So Many Shows – Paul:
I’ve seen all eight episodes.
Michael:
Oh wow, nice. Good job.
So Many Shows – Paul:
In watching them, I kinda got the idea that you might’ve been influenced by things like “Twilight Zone” and Philip K. Dick and “Black Mirror” and maybe even HP Lovecraft. Does any of that sound right?
Michael:
Yeah. All those things. Yeah, for sure. And then, you know, like “X-files” is definitely a big influence as well. Somebody like David Cronenberg, his movies were a big influence on me too. Specifically, with episode seven that deals with kind of like the more body-horror stuff. So yeah, all those things that you referenced were definitely brewing in our brains when we were developing it for sure.
So Many Shows – Paul:
What was that Cronenberg? Was it “Videodrome”? Is that the right one?
Michael:
Videodrome Yeah. Yup.
So Many Shows – Paul:
Now that you mention it, I definitely could see some of that in there. So, is this a group collaborative sort of deal or one person’s idea?
Michael:
So, the main people involved were myself, Mario Miscione and my brother, Tim Nardelli. We did this movie, it was acquired by Netflix in 2015, called Circle, which is kind of similar in tone. It’s kind of like Twilight Zone-esque. Kind of like “Twilight Zone” meets “12 Angry Men”, if you can imagine what that would look like.
So Many Shows – Paul:
I think I’ve seen “Circle”.
Michael:
Oh, have you? The 50 people in the room and every two minutes one of them gets killed?
So Many Shows – Paul:
Yes. Yes, I’ve seen that.
Michael:
And then, yeah, that was our movie. Thanks for watching it. We did that together and “Dark/Web” was kind of our next more, ambitious step. And so we’re kind of the three main creators on the show. And then we brought in, I guess we like to call him kind of like guest directors or guest writers for the anthology segments on the show.
