Clean Slate offers charming duo with Mack and Opal.
Prime Video’s Clean Slate knows a thing or two about father daughter relationships. Harry (George Wallace) and Desiree (Laverne Cox) navigate a reunion after 23 years of estrangement when Desiree arrives on his doorstep as his daughter instead of the son he is expecting. Meanwhile, Opal (Norah Murphy) and her father Mack get their second chance when Mack completes a ten-year prison sentence and returns home to eleven-year-old Opal.
Mack works at the Slate Family Car Wash. Opal helps out as well as an “intern” due to child labor laws “and whatnot”. Whether it is with laughter or endearment, Mack and Opal bring a sweet charm to the series. Mack and Opal both encounter vulnerable moments when their unconventional circumstances are met with judgement. No matter who is playing the parental role at any given moment, these two lift each other up and have a lot of fun along the way.
Interview
Jay Wilkison and Norah Murphy bring a fresh and authentic twist to the portrayal of family on Clean Slate. You cannot help but root for them as individuals and as a family unit. I had the pleasure of interviewing Jay and Norah at the 13th annual SCAD TVfest in Midtown, Atlanta in February. Topics include the unique aspects Mack and Opal’s relationship as well as Norah’s delightful portrayal of Opal as a precocious tween. Precocious does not always play as likeable, but Norah’s Opal is very much likeable.
