Black Lightning Episode 5 Recap

Family is the name of the game in tonight’s episode.

We see two different stories about family, both revolving around the need for revenge.

– Tobias and Tori

We get a glimpse into Tobias’s life as a child. His father, Eldridge (played by T.C. Carson), ridiculing him for his pigmentation telling the young Tobias that he didn’t fit in with the blacks or the whites. We also see him hit his daughter.

This scene being shown from the older Tobias’s P.O.V made it even more interesting to me. I thought him answering and us watching from his P.O.V made it more empowering as well as emotional. It allowed us to also see that the villains feel pain as well.

Tori tells her brother the only way to move forward is to deal with the past. Following his sisters advice they go and visit Eldridge. Even though expected, the part where Tobias breaks his back and tells him he would die slowly felt like Tobias was letting go of the past.

– Jefferson and his father

We also learned that Jefferson’s father had been murdered for looking into a missing children’s case and it was Tobias that killed him. Though that pushes Jefferson to go past his own limits for revenge, we unfortunately have to wait two weeks to see his revenge unfold.

Jennifer learns a lesson

After successfully defending herself against two other girls at a skating ring without getting hurt at all, Jennifer faces the consequences of allowing her anger to get the best of her. She learned that she should try to walk away from any situation if possible. I believe we may have also seen the beginning of Jennifer’s transformation into Lightning.

Thunder always strikes before Lightning

Tonight was the night. Anissa became Thunder and infiltrated a storage facility and found the drug being used on the missing children.

To see her suit up was amazing. To have a black, gay heroine who is a lead in a show is not only a milestone but a step forward in representation for multiple groups.

The questions we are left to think over
  1. Is Gambi to be trusted?
  2. Will Henderson continue working with Black lightning after the failed attempt at catching Toledo?
  3. Does Lady Eve know Tobias is plotting against her?
  4. When will Lynn just disappear? I personally would like to see this happen sooner than later. Her character is stale and loves to repeat herself over and over.
