Black Lightning Episode 1
Our story begins with Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) picking up his oldest daughter, Anissa Pierce (Nafessa Williams) from the police station after taking part in a not-so-peaceful protest.
These issues come into play almost immediately as the family is pulled over and Jefferson is handcuffed and shown to a woman whose store was robbed. When she says “no,” they un-cuff him and he realizes it was only because he is black and nothing more. This is also the same time we see his powers as Black Lightning.
From the start, this show is doing a great job of mixing social injustice with the action of a comic book show.
Return of the Lightning
When Anissa and her sister Jennifer Pierce (China Anne Mclaine) are kidnapped by the gang, the 100, Jefferson decides to suit up again. With the help of Peter Gambi (James Remar) and a new stylized suit, he goes and saves his daughters.
…is the heart of this show. Not only does our hero have complete control of his powers, he also keeps his family close to him. Between him reconciling with his ex-wife, Lynn Pierce (Christine Adams) and taking care of his teenage daughters he is a well-rounded character.
Unlike some of the other “super hero” shows, this one is darker and tackles everything head on. You have an established hero grounded in reality – which adds another level to Black Lightning.
Like Father, Like Daughter
The last few minutes gives us something to look forward to – We see Anissa looking in the mirror after a nightmare and she breaks the sink by accident. Another super hero in the family…
I can’t wait to see where this show takes us. Black Lightning is on The CW Tuesday nights after The Flash at 9/8c.
