Younger Season 6 Episode 4

After a week off from our beloved show, we are back with the much-anticipated episode in which Liza and Kelsey figure out the big secret behind Mercury.

So who is backing Mercury?

We left Liza with suspicion about who could have fronted Zane with enough money to steal the Audrey Colbert book. She is telling herself this suspicion is all based on coincidence, but Maggie wisely tells her, “If you go looking for trouble, you will find it.”

Kelsey is strategizing which author she can focus on to put Millineal back on track. Diana, Kelsey, and Liza discuss a long time Empirical author who writes erotica for an older female demographic. Diane reminds Kelsey it is up to her to secure the renewed contract because this author is a cash cow.

Kelsey sets out to find and confront Zane because she’s still mad about the Audrey Colbert book and she wants to see how big of a problem he will end up being for her.

She finds Zane at a communal workspace and they accuse each other of unethical methods of securing authors.  Kelsey is just mad he played her and Zane tells her to suck it up.

Back at work, the ladies of Millineal are meeting with their erotica author, who informs them she is not interested in signing with a new company like Millineal that will re-imagine her voice for a younger audience.  She has a problem with a company that does not place value on the people with experience. She isn’t going to renew her contract and felt she at least owed them to face to face.

Girl Talk with Lauren

Kelsey is venting to Lauren and they decide Kelsey needs to get Zane out of her system with a new guy so they pull up the dating apps.  Lauren speculates men are intimidated by her job title so she revamps the dating app profiles and immediately gets a “ding”.  Motivated to regroup, Kelsey goes to get a blow out and discovers she has stress-induced bald spots and begins to realize she is losing more and more hair every day.

Do you smell garlic knots?

While getting a prescription for her stress-induced alopecia, Kelsey runs into Maggie, getting a prescription for her yeast infection. Maggie invites Kelsey over to a dinner that includes Charles, Liza and Maggies new friend Beth. Beth insists Maggie try a home remedy for her “issue” and puts a clove of garlic in her lady bits. Throughout the dinner, everyone keeps smelling the garlic and finally Maggie bursts with the confession that it’s her – Well ok then!

Before this outburst, the group is discussing Zanes new company and Kelsey is questioning Charles on what he knows. He encourages her to forget about Zane; because it’s business, not personal.  Kelsey insists someone is backing Zane but knows he wants it to seem like he’s working alone.  Charles manages to avoid any more comments on the matter.

As she’s walking him out, Liza asks Charles if there’s anything he’s not telling her. Liza reminds him that she’s had a lot of experience with lying and she saw him meeting with Zane; plus he took out a second mortgage on his home.  Therefore, she thinks he is backing Mercury. Charles confesses he didn’t want to give up Millineal but he wanted to be with Liza.  However, Millennial was his dads’ company and he wants to build something of his own.

This is his chance to take a risk and reinvent himself. Charles says, “you should understand that”.  He also asks Liza to keep this information between them because he needs time to figure everything out.

An Interception

Kelsey sees the author tweeting that she has a meeting at Suffolk house, and she knows it’s with Zane. She sets out to intercept the meeting and Liza shows up trying to intercept Kelsey because Liza rightly assumes this meeting involves Charles.

Kelsey is trying to convince the author to sign with her when she sees Charles walk in with Zane.  She is livid and proceeds to lay into Charles; reminding him, he’s the chairman of the board, which means he’s working against his own company and against Kelsey. She accuses him of being by her side one minute and stealing her authors the next minute. Of course, her confrontation is videotaped by the other restaurant-goers and ends up online.

The Aftermath

The ladies regroup in the office. The good news is the author is staying with Millineal after seeing how Kelsey was willing to fight for her. The bad news is several literary agents are considering moving their clients to Mercury because they all want the experience that Charles brings to the table. The worst news, Charles just resigned from the board – which means he is officially the competition now.

Final Thoughts

I must admit, I am a little surprised by this episode.  I expected to see Mercury be a major issue between Charles and Liza right off the bat  My personal reaction would be Kelsey’s reaction.

Maybe Liza can’t be angry because she has spent so much time hiding parts of herself from Charles and those around her that she is better able to give him the benefit of the doubt.  This secret undermining of Kelsey (and subsequently Liza) seems out of character for Charles, but he does want to build something of his own and this is his chance.

I would like to believe Charles isn’t intending to be vicious.  I still think this business/Kelsey versus Charles/Liza will be a major point of contention for this couple that will be hard to overcome.  What do all our #TeamCharles fans think of his actions?
