Instinct Episode 5

It’s been two long weeks, but Lizzie and Dylan are back and they have a case of mistaken identity on their hands. Dylan and Andy have a small spat and Julian (guest star Naveen Andrews) let’s Dylan in on some disturbing news about Lizzie’s fiancé and the police department.

The Murder

We start the episode with a young women packing quickly and telling her mother to let her father know she wasn’t going to be able to meet him. Then we pan in on a helicopter announcing they had found a Jane Doe. We find out her heart has been cut out – The crime is done with exact precision.

The victim is first ID’d as Maggie Fallon (played by Julia Schlaepfer). After Dylan and Lizzie let her father know what was going on, they went to her apartment to find out more where they find her alive and healthy.

Maggie lets them know that the woman’s name was Amy Jenkins and she had been renting a B&C from her but she hadn’t seen her since giving her the keys. Dylan also notices that there are flowers in the wastebasket. Maggie explains that she has been being watched by someone and she even had an extra lock installed on her door out of fear.

After looking at the photos sent to Maggie by the stalker, they visited the outdoor market where the pictures were taken from and confront the stalker, Pete, who works at a flower stand. Soon after ruling out Pete, since he almost passed out from the site of blood, they returned to square one. When Pete comes in with a bruise on his face, he tells them that some big guy came and beat him up for stalking Maggie which leads them back to her father.

After Dylan lifted prints off of the dead girl, Julian let’s Dylan know that the girls real name is Beth Lennon, a Grifter or someone who engages in petty swindling, with a large amount of credit debt and over twenty nine online profiles. They find out she was going to meet a gentleman she met online the night she was killed, but she booked before the check came and he realized she was just after the free meal. They were able to get a location and find CCTV footage of her being attacked.

After help from some of the others from the homicide squad, they found out that Frank Fallon (played by J.C. Mckenzie) and the father of Maggie was taking bids for human organs. They saw that the daughter of the chef at Frank’s favorite restaurant, Akiro Sato (played by James Saito) was on a heart transplant list and that a check to Akiro has been voided after his daughter died of degenerative heart failure.

Moving on, they go looking for Maggie and Frank at the restaurant and when they don’t see Maggie or Akiro they get more afraid for her life. They find Maggie coming out of the bathroom and tell her to go back inside and lock the door. Akiro is dying in the back from blowfish poisoning where he confesses to wanting to kill Maggie because her father gave the heart meant for his daughter to another bidder who paid him more leading to her death. He felt ashamed for killing the wrong girl.

I loved the complexity of the case. We really got to see both Lizzie and Dylan at their best.

But along with the case we also had the personal cases of a one Mr. Dylan Reinhart.

Dylan’s personal life

Dylan really got wrapped up in this case and it took Andy and Joan (guest star Whoopi Goldberg) to pull him back.

Andy brings up that they had an extensive chat about him quitting his law firm to open the bar but they never really chatted about Dylan helping with the NYPD. Dylan also starts to get pranked by some of the other guys on the squad. At one point they pop the tire on his bike, and when they thought he would get upset he actually just rode off on just the back tire leaving the others in awe.

Joan came to talk to him about the book he was supposed to be writing, but wasn’t. She also acted as a counselor letting him know that he’s his true self when he is solving crimes like the one on hand.

I really wish Whoopi was in every episode because she’s funny and brings a real sense of light hearted ness to the show.

Julian also dropped a big load onto Dylan’s shoulders, letting him know that Lizzie’s fiancé and old partner was being investigated for smuggling by the NYPD, FBI, and MI6 before he mysteriously dies in “the line of duty”. Dylan quickly denies Lizzie could be dirty as well and tells Julian not to look into it any further.

After solving the crime, Dylan goes to Andy’s bar and tells him that he loves what he does and that he needs Andy to always bring him back to reality. After a sweet kiss, Andy says he has to get back to work and throws a badge at Dylan with a smile.

I love that Dylan and Andy’s relationship is rock solid. Even though they hit tough patches they work through them. I also am very interested to see where this twist with Lizzie’s fiancé goes. Will she be dirty? The one thing I know though is… Dylan should’ve gone straight to Lizzie instead of just keeping it to himself. We all know how harboring secrets this big ends up on television.
