Blood and Treasure Episode 8

Last week, we found our team captured by Interpol and the Carabinieri.  How will they get out of that mess?

The One That Got Away

As Dr. Castillo has said before in episode 5, the team is obsessed with finding Farouk.  They just can’t let it go. Now they are in Rome, facing jail time because Danny can’t let the one that got away escape.  FBI Agent Harper from the Boston office, is extricating Danny back to the US. Disappointed that Danny just couldn’t let this go, Harper has his own case that he just can’t close.  The Fensgate Museum heist, where ten paintings were stolen. Only one of the thieves was caught, Patrick McNamara, Danny’s father. The paintings were never recovered and Patrick won’t talk about who else was involved.  Harper informs Danny that his father’s health is failing, and offers Danny a deal. If he can get his father to reveal where the paintings are, the FBI will drop all the charges against Danny and Lexi and take Patrick to a hospital where he can get better care.  Not really in any place to negotiate, Danny also insists on having a file on Operation Paperclip – a top secret US program that recruited Nazi scientists to work for the US after WWII. Agent Harper agrees.

Good Cop, Bad Cop

Gwen and Fabi are trying to get Omar to talk.  Omar wants to cut a deal where he could get a new identity, a new home and a new bank account.  He only cares about the money and not the cause like the other men do. He suggests moving fast because now that he has been captured, Farouk will start to set in plan in place faster.  Gwen suggests releasing him and letting Farouk take care of him.

In Cairo, Farouk steals a vial from a toxicology lab that will help with the weapon he is creating.

Danny’s Backstory

Flashback to Boston, 1997, where young Danny overhears his father and the rest of the gang planning the heist.  Flash forward to present day, inside the prison. Patrick is in a wheelchair and is brought over to Danny and Lexi.  Lexi learns that he was a cop. They try to get him to talk, but he won’t reveal anything and says, “I’m not a rat. Now go visit your mother.”  Now he may not be a rat, but he is leaving Danny clues, because his mother has been dead for a while. Danny heads to the house he grew up in.

As they are walking down a street lined with brownstones, Lexi never expected Danny to grow up in a neighborhood like this.  She expected him to fall from the sky with a big ‘S’ on a cape. (This moment made me smile – Lexi actually had her own movie reference here!)  The house that Danny grew up in is boarded up.

We see a car pull up across the street from it watching Danny and Lexi. Danny kicks in one of the boards, and they enter.  The house was considered a crime scene, so Danny was never allowed to get any of his things. He pulls out an old lunchbox, where he kept memories and pictures of his mother.  We get a little more of Danny’s backstory here. His mother was a nurse and his parents split when he was young. He moved to Texas with his mother, but after she died, he was sent to live with his father.

They never really got along. He looks at the back of one of the pictures of his mom and notices the name “Tim Keeler” written on it, but Danny doesn’t know who that is. They start to hear footsteps approaching and find a woman who demands the picture.  Danny and Lexi escape by jumping out of a window.

Who is Tim Keeler?

Flashback to 1997 where Danny overhears a conversation after the heist.  His father was spotted by a guard and now the only way to tie up loose ends is to kill the guard.  He also overhears that someone blew their only escape route on purpose. He took the money and the paintings.

Present day, Danny wants to find out who is hunting them.  He phones Gwen to see if there are any ex black ops working in the Boston area.  She doesn’t know much about black ops, but doesn’t think Farouk will stop chasing them.

Danny goes to visit one of the men that he knew his father was working with, Chappie.  He says that Tim Keeler is a dirty cop, a detective.

Danny goes to Harper with the information, and he finds that Keeler went to Cuba.  Danny feels that this information more than qualifies for the file he requested and feels they should be done with this manhunt, but Harper disagrees.  The FBI can’t go out of the country to retrieve the stolen goods, but Danny and Lexi can.

Always Doing The Right Thing

A flashback to 1997 Boston, shows Patrick being arrested. Danny turned him in.

Back to the present, Danny and Lexi have traveled to Havana. They find Tim Keeler and get him to talk about the paintings. He stashed the paintings in a pool cue case under the bar that he runs in Havana. When Danny checks the case, he notices one missing. The guy that hooked up Keeler with the job, took one.

The woman that attacked them at the house in Boston, kills Keeler and demands the paintings.  Danny and Lexi run and the woman chases after them. Danny hides the original paintings and burns the pool cue case. The woman goes after the case and Danny goes to retrieve the real paintings. He and Lexi take off.

Tying Up Loose Ends

At the Carabinieri headquarters, Omar is signing paperwork from the lawyer. As he is signing the paperwork he dies. The lawyer poisoned him, and takes an injection for herself, so she is not affected by it. She leaves the building undetected.

In Boston, Patrick is in a real hospital, getting the care he needs. Danny gets his Paperclip file the FBI promised him. Harper says the painting that is missing is The Death of Cleopatra. So who exactly was this man that hooked up Keeler with the job?  Why was it that particular painting he was interested in? Harper asks Danny to help finish this case once he is done with Farouk. (Perhaps they are connected?). As Danny and Lexi arr leaving the office, Lexi tells him that it was Fabi on the phone and that he is a member of the Brotherhood. Danny mentions that he gave the number to Gwen to find out who it was.

At the Carabinieri HQ, they are cleaning the room that Omar was in. Gwen gets a call about the number, and realizes that it is Fabi.

A doctor working with the toxin the Farouk stole, finishes weaponizing the toxin. Farouk wants to test the toxin and uses the doctor as his test subject. He sets of the toxin and kills the doctor.
