3 Big Questions…
That lead to more questions.
What is Tavo’s Real Problem with the United States?
The timeframe stated in this season’s first episodes moves forward three years from the end of last season. Before that, in case this is your first episode (ep 502 Fog of War) somehow, The United States (with helpers from other countries) stopped the plague that wiped out civilization AND stopped the famine that threatened to wipe out the survivors. Both world-saving solutions, the United States distributed freely. In the time since, The United States military re-built, re-trained, and re-staffed. Meanwhile, Tavo, the charismatic leader of this season’s bad-guys, has united a ton of people south of Mexico against the United States. Publicly, he uses the radio to rile up his followers, using rhetoric that would probably hold water today (no plague, no famine). The usual stuff about the US being bullies and generally mean to smaller countries. The trouble is, the world of The Last Ship has set the entire world back to a level playing field. It sucks for everyone, everywhere. Plus, you add in that Tavo and the people he cares about would not be alive without the United States. This makes his speeches and public motivations ring hollow. There may be someone oppressing his “people”, but it’s not the US. We wouldn’t have the manpower to do it if we wanted to.
So why does Tavo -really- hate the United States? Old business from before the plague? Or is the US just a great boogeyman for a would-be conqueror to use to rally downtrodden people? I bet there’s more to this story.
How Long Will We Have to Wait to See Tom Chandler Back at Sea?
I know it. You know it. It doesn’t matter that Tom retired. It doesn’t matter that he’s stuck at HQ right now. This series will not end with Admiral Tom Chandler landlocked. Great. I’m glad we all agree on that. Two questions form in my little mind though. When does Tom make it back out to sea and how does he get there? Tavo’s opening attack crippled the rest of the functioning US Navy and everything else (planes, etc.) had their computers hacked. I think the writers will make us wait for it a little while, say episode 4 before Tom gets in the fight. Still. Is he rowing his own boat to get there? Maybe a reserve vessel gets brought online somehow (Navy peeps – I know in real life that takes months of work with a huge crew – but this is TV).
Here’s what I’d like to see: Nathan James gets in a huge scrap. She takes on three or four ships and takes a serious beating. Just when you think she’s done for… WHAM! A bad guy gets hit so hard it starts sinking immediately. Chandler has come with… something and will even the odds. In my heart, I’d love to see a battleship (since this is TV), but in my brain, I can think of several really easy ways that would be impossible. Still, if the enemy insists on fighting a cyber war, maybe something old, like a battleship, is the only way to punch through.
Who Will Side with the United States?
As of this episode, the Mexican president sided with the United States on TV for the whole world to see. We’ve been lead to believe that all countries south of Mexico stand united against the US, making a lot of pressure for Mexico to fall in line. I have to admit, it made me happy to see Mexico stick with us, at least initially. No one has mentioned Canada and with the state of the world, the Eastern Hemisphere might as well be Pluto. Who’s going to help us while we’re down? Friendly neighbors to the north? Maybe. Central and South American that think Tavo is full of crap? Yes. I think these are our new allies. In fact, the line when Danny and Pablo talk about using a narcotic runner’s plane to get back north got me thinking. I bet we throw in with the drug lords to get some planes and fighters. So that leaves us Mexico (which may flip thanks to the ambassador’s assassination), resistance groups, and drug cartels. Who knows. Maybe a new player will emerge with a helpful submarine or something. It’s why we watch, right?
