The Purge Finale!
The Purge Finale brings us to the end of Purge Night—did your favorite character make it out alive?
A Nation Reborn
With the clock winding down, Joe only has 42 minutes to carry out his Purge.
The finale opens up with a flashback to Joe preparing for the Purge, rigging the high school and setting up the cage. He’s driving a screw down when a car honks his horn and he goes to investigate, forgetting to finish the screw off. This will be important later.
Back to the present, Joe ties Penelope and Paige up, and takes Rick and Jenna out of the cage. It’s time for Rick to answer for his wrongs against Joe.
It turns out that Rick cheated Joe out of his money. After Joe did the work for him on the Purge security systems, Rick claimed he did faulty work and got out of paying him what they had agreed to in the contract. Now, forced to admit it, Rick finally comes clean with Joe, and with Jenna, about what he did. He begs Joe to let Jenna go, she wasn’t a part of it, she had no idea that Rick had cheated Joe. So Joe agrees, she can go free—if she shoots Rick.
Joe hands Jenna a gun and tells her to kill Rick and he will let her go free. Rick tells her to do it. He wants her and the baby to be safe. Crying and trembling, Jenna actually puts the gun to Rick’s head and pulls the trigger. Dang, girl. Of course the gun wasn’t loaded.
Meanwhile, Penelope has discovered the screw, and she has worked it loose, cut her ropes somehow, and gotten Paige free, as well. She has a plan. She fakes taking Page hostage with the screw to her neck, tells Joe that she has a right to Purge. Joe, not about to give up one of his victims, heads back to the cage.
All this time, Miguel and Pete have been making their way to the high school. After killing a few of Cowboy’s men, they finally arrive and find the high school rigged. Before they can get in, Cowboy and the rest of his men show up and start shooting. Pete comes up with a plan and they lead Cowboy into a trip wire, setting off an explosion, getting rid of Cowboy and his men (for the time being), and at the same time gaining entrance into the high school.
It all happens at once—the explosion, and Penelope shoving the screw into Joe’s eye, giving her and the others time to get away. Miguel and Pete are inside now, guns drawn, looking for Penelope. They run into Rick and Jenna who are trying to get away. But there’s another shootout between Miguel, Pete, and the carnival of flesh guys, and Pete and Rick both get shot. Pete is okay, but Rick doesn’t make it… he tells Jenna he wants her and the baby to go away, to get out of America … and then he dies. Pete gets Jenna out to safety.
Penelope and Paige are trying to find a way out, and Joe is giving chase. The clock is almost out, just a few minutes left, and he is desperate. Paige gets blasted, but Penelope keeps going. She makes into a big area where there’s a swimming pool before Joe catches up. He’s about to shoot Penelope when Miguel saves her. Joe tries one last time to finish the job, but the Purge sirens go off, signaling the end of Purge Night. And just like that, Joe goes back to his old self. He is a law abiding citizen, after all. But he promises he will catch up to them next year. Miguel isn’t waiting around till next year, and even though Purge night is over, he shoots Joe and shoves him into the pool. Y’all don’t think Joe is dead, do you?
So Miguel and Penelope, Pete, and Jenna have all made it through Purge night. But the show doesn’t end there—we flash forward one year, it’s Purge night again. Pete is still running the Cantina, Miguel and Penelope are heading out into the night to help others, and Jenna and the baby are safe in France. A damn good ending that would have worked either way, whether the show ended there or got a renewal—but good news, Purge fans, The Purge has been renewed for a Season 2! Yay! Who is ready for another Purge Night?
My biggest surprise for the finale was Jane—I was shocked that she’s really dead. Through the whole finale I kept waiting for them to find her and discover that she was still alive—but I guess not. I’m rather disappointed. Of all the people I thought would make it out, Jane would have been at the top of my list.
So, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the finale, and on Season 2. What do you think will happen on the next Purge night? Will Joe return? Is he really dead? And what about Jenna? How will she be involved in the next Purge if she’s in France? There was a mention on a news thing she was watching in the end about France considering the Purge, so maybe Jenna will still be on board. I hope so, I like her character a lot.
Till next time, Purgers! Stay safe out there!
