Sunnyside Episode  5

This is the first episode to be released on the NBC app and Hulu. The episode starts off at Viola’s bar. This seems to be a trend for the openings of the show. The group is assembled at another one of their lessons and we see that Brady is behind the bar.  Griselda is busy and she lets him bartend while she is away. Brady begins to replicate moves from the movie “Cocktail” but he fails miserably, breaking several bottles. He even cuts his hand.

With his medical knowledge, Hakim begins to stitch Brady’s hand. Hakim suggests going to the hospital, but Brady does not want to go because he doesn’t have the money. Hakim takes Brady to see Mallory instead.

Garrett, Diana, Griselda

Griselda returns with Diana. Diana is trying to pass a bill for affordable housing in Queens. She thought that Griselda would be a great face for the campaign.  Garrett offers to give her advice about appearing on cable TV news shows, but Diana refuses his help. Mei Lin and Jun Ho offer to give Diana a makeover, but she refuses that as well. They end up giving Griselda a makeover with a beautiful diamond necklace, as she goes on television explaining that housing in Queens is too expensive. When the host, Tripp Henson, asks about funding and tax dollars to pay for this, Diana gets defensive and ends up using the new stadium that the Mets received as a rebuttal. She ends up yelling ‘The Mets are crap’ and Tripp is offended for her disgusting language.

Diana is now receiving hate mail and phone calls regarding her comments. She finally asks Garrett for help. When he sets up a mock interview where he plays Tripp, Diana gives up and feels she is not cut out for cable TV news shows.

Garrett goes to see Tripp to see if he can smooth things over. He asked if Diana can come back onto the show. Trip obliges since they had a cancellation on the next show. When Garrett gets back to the bar to tell Diana the good news, she directs him over to the TV screen where Tripp is laughing about the BQE puker supporting her bill.

Diana goes back onto the show, explains how she doesn’t need Garrett’s support, matches Tripp’s comments and gets to support her bill. She even gets the bill to the floor for a vote.

Brady and Hakim

Brady is so impressed with Hakim’s medical knowledge, that he sets up an area for Hakim to see patients in his friend’s shop. They call him Dr Taxicab. When Mallory hears about this, she visits him. She understands how much he misses practicing medicine, but tells him that this is not what he should be doing. Brady brings in a woman who is about to go into labor. Mallory tells him to get his taxi, the woman needs to go to the hospital. After the baby is born, Mallory tells Hakim that she will write a recommendation for him to start a residency when he is ready.

Thoughts

This episode splits up the cast again, which seems to be working well. The show still has its moments of exaggerated humor, but it is getting much better with the timing. Fortunately, the fans still have the opportunity to see these episodes on the app.
