Sunnyside Episode 4
This episode was the last episode that NBC aired on television. All future episodes will be streamed from the NBC app or Hulu.
The episode starts off with the group studying Lincoln at Viola’s bar. This is the only time that we see all of the group together. The rest of the episode they split off and that actually made the episode funnier.
Garrett, Mei Lin and Jun Ho
Mei Lin and Jun Ho were supposed to start a business with the money that their father gave them instead of going on shopping sprees and trips all over the world. Since they never did anything for the company, they ask Garrett for help. Garrett goes to visit the office, where there is only one desk with one employee. They have a day to prepare for a visit from their father’s right hand man, Heinrich. He needs to see their progress. Jun Ho is in charge of getting office furniture , Mei Lin is in charge of getting workers.
The following day, the office is filled with desks and staffed. Garrett and the twins pulled it off, just in time for Heinrich’s arrival. They fake their way through presentations to make everything look official. Just when they thought they were all set, Heinrich tells them that their father wants to visit. The twins begin to panic; they haven’t seen their father in over 10 years. At this point, they are in over their heads and Garrett suggests to come clean. He wants the twins to tell their father that they haven’t done anything and also that he should be around more in their lives.
When the time comes for his arrival, he is a no show. Heinrich tells them that their father doesn’t fell that they are worthy for his visit. Garrett steps in the stand up for the twins. He tells Heinrich that they always show up to his class and they’re working really hard towards their citizenship. The twins also tell Heinrich that if their father wants to talk to them, he needs to do it in person. Garrett is really proud of the twins for standing up for themselves. When Jun Ho realizes that Garrett was there for them every step of the way, he feels that Garrett is like a father to them. This was a very strange and awkward moment because instead of using words like ‘father figure’ they just start calling him ‘daddy’. It’s moments like these where the show tries too hard to push for comedic moments and ends up just going overboard.
Griselda, Brady and Hakim
Griselda finally saved enough money to get the refrigerator she’s always wanted. Just then her son Erik makes a grand entrance into the bar singing. She is excited to see him and explains to Hakim and Brady that he is going to be a Broadway star. He wrote a hip-hop play about Vice President Mondale. Brady says that it sounds just like Hamilton and Erik takes offense to this. Griselda‘s boss at Viola‘s bar lets Eric perform his play there. Griselda starts to spend the money she saved on advertising for his play.
Both Brady and Hakim think Eric is taking advantage of Griselda. When they approach him to talk to him about this, Erik didn’t realize it. He decides to abandon his dreams of his play and starts to work at the bar. Griselda is upset with Brady and Hakim. She doesn’t want Erik to have to work at the bar. She says that she takes on all these jobs so that her kids don’t have to. Erik ends up performing his play at the bar and gives the money that he made (which didn’t add up to much) to his mom.
Thoughts
This episode worked better than previous episodes. Splitting up the group gave an opportunity for more laughs and better timing. It didn’t seem as though the group was competing for laughs as much as some of the previous episodes. Hopefully we will see this continue in future episodes.
