Instinct Season 2 Review

We have come to an end. Tonight we watched the end of an era for one of the most needed shows on television. Not only did it have an openly gay actor playing an openly gay man but also showed that families of all types should be celebrated and held close.

Amidst the personal drama though we still had the cases. Let’s take a look at the crimes the awesome duo of Lizzie (Bojana Novakovic) and Dylan (Alan Cumming) solved.

Cases

Episode 4

The case of the dead step-mom was one with an ending I didn’t see coming. Not only did it come with the case of a poisoned apple but it was also the last person I suspected, her best friend.

Episode 5

The case of the man in the coffin had to be one of the more gruesome deaths we’ve seen. Also learning about Scaphism, an ancient Persian method of execution was interesting as well.

Episode 6

The case of the week really wasn’t that exciting. It was really just something to keep Lizzie and Dylan busy.

Episode 7

I loved this episode. Watching Dylan and Lizzie go under cover at a sex club and the actors getting to use their normal accents was a nice change of pace.

Episode 8

I Figured out who killed the figure skater within the first few minutes of the episode. Once again this felt like the focus was solely put on the emotional storyline and not the case. The best part was watching Jasmine (Sharon Leal) get back into the field.

Episode 9

No case of the week, just tracking down Cormack Rego, the sleeping beauty killer.

Episode 10

This one I have to say took me a while to solve. I even had the wrong person pinned for the whole episode. The fact it ended up being a crooked cop at the same time Dylan was questioning if he could trust Julian tied things together nicely.

Episode 11

For being the series finale, the case Dylan and Lizzie worked was rather dull. I feel it just was to push both Dylan and Lizzie to where they were at the end.

Now to that case that had us asking all season:

Who is The Sleeping Beauty Killer?

Through out the season we watched Detective Fucci (Danny Mastrogiorgio)and Detective Stock (Travis Van Winkle) along with Dylan, try to solve this perplexing case.

The Beginning

It all started with the body of a woman being found with a blanket covering her and her head on a pillow.

Then we learned from Detective Stock that this also happened in his hometown of Garfield, Nebraska.

Heading home

After no leads, they finally get a break in the case when the killer called a local radio station and Dylan said he believed it was someone close to Ryan.

Ryan and Dylan fly to Garfield where they figure out a little to late that it was Ryan’s old friend and the son of the first victim, Cormac Rego (Michael Rady).

I’m glad they didn’t pin it on Ryan’s boss because that would’ve just been to obvious.

The final showdown

After a failed attempt at using his sister as bait to catch him, a city wide manhunt back in New York began. When they caught up with him at the boat house, where he felt safe, it came down to just Ryan and Cormac. Thanks to Dylan intervening and using Cormac’s ego against him, they were able to subdue him and bring him in alive.

I liked the season long case but I felt it ended in such a perfect package it didn’t feel gratifying.

Now to the heart of the show, the people.

Andy (Daniel Ings) and Dylan.

This is where the show shined. Not only did we finally see a happily married gay couple but a gay couple that chose to adopt.

Seeing the way they faced the same issues as a man and a woman would with doubt and insecurities was wonderful and refreshing.

We saw both wrestle with pros and cons and what they were willing to give up to grow their family.

Also, letting them have the gender reveal was icing on the cake. More shows need to embrace the diversity that’s present in real life.

Lizzie

Lizzie grew a lot this season. Not only becoming Detective second class but also personally.

She stood up for herself with Julian and in the end she embraced the side of her she wasn’t letting out. She allowed herself freedom.

Julian

Julian working in the office was fun to watch. Jules was a good addition to the team.

His story never got finished though. Not only did we never find out who blew up his personal office, but we never did find out what the huge threat to New York was.

Jasmine

I liked watching her step up and kick some serious butt this season.

Not only did we see her at her lowest after her breakup, we saw her at her highest when she put her foot down about what was going on in the office.

I wish we would’ve had more time to see if something would’ve developed between her and Sgt.Harris (Michael B. Silver).

In conclusion,

This show has had a lot of wonderful and memorable moments.

Not only did they break barriers, they also brought to light a lot of issues not normally addressed in television shows.

I just wish they wouldn’t have left us with so many questions like:

1. What was the threat to New York Julian was trying to stop?

2. If the CIA was really compromised was Dylan’s dad a part of it?

3. Did Andy get his job at the firm?

4. What did Dylan and Andy name their son?

Even with all the questions left unanswered this show was a masterpiece. I wish it could’ve continued, but I am very thankful that we got what we did.

Sometimes a show comes along that just touches both your heart and your soul and for me that show was Instinct.

Thank you to the wonderful cast, crew and writers for giving the rest of us this wonderful treasure.
