The Good Doctor Episode 11 aired January 8th, on ABC.
Shaun is back! And then he’s not! What is this show doing to me?!
Shaun
After a long wait, we finally found out where Shaun ran off to, and it was as many of us suspected—he was hiding out with Lea.
After Dr. Glassman barged into Lea’s apartment, demanding to know where Shaun was and finally leaving after not finding him (but coming darn near close), Shaun comes out of hiding. Lea complains about Dr. Glassman, who she calls “Glassy the Grouch”, and tells Shaun he needs a break. She convinces him to take a road trip with her and the two set out in her grandpa’s “Starsky and Hutch” car.

Starsky and Hutch (AKA Lea and Shaun) have a fantastic time. Lea teaches Shaun how to drive (well, not really, as Shaun crashes the car), how to drink (turns out he likes Tequila), how to sing karaoke (they both suck), and how to kiss (that was so sweet—right up until he vomited). But then, right when Shaun is finding some happiness, Lea lowers the boom—she’s moving to Pennsylvania. A teary-eyed Shaun runs away again. Not nice, Lea, make him fall for you and then tell him you’re leaving.
Meanwhile
Back at the hospital, several story lines unfold:
- A plan to separate conjoined twins is moved up from its original six months schedule when one of the twins develops life threatening complications. After one of the girls has second thoughts, and then later changes her mind, the surgery is a go and seems to be a success—but in recovery, the girls are not waking up, and Melendez is concerned. He tells their mother they should have been awake by then.
- Dr. Melendez makes up with Jessica when he tells her he loves her, and he doesn’t have to be a father, he can volunteer and find other ways to be a father figure. Very sweet.
- Kalu is trying to get his job back. He talks to Dr. Coyle and tries to get him to speak with Dr. Andrews, but Coyle’s response is, “Not my problem.” Until Claire makes it his problem when she threatens to find every woman he’s ever harassed and have them report him. He changes his mind then, and talks to Andrews, but it’s not enough, Andrews tells Jared he still won’t reinstate him. So let me get this straight, Dr. Coyle, who sexually harassed Claire can stay, but Jared has to go? Hmmm … something doesn’t jive here.
So the first half of “Islands” left me nearly in tears … again. Shaun was last seen sitting at a bus stop, all alone, Dr. Kalu isn’t coming back, apparently, and the twins are not awake. Okay, the twins, I can deal with, they’re not regulars. But come on … why get rid of Kalu? I was just getting to really like him. And Shaun? If Shaun isn’t working at the hospital anymore, what are we left with?
Which leads me to this: the first half of “Islands” felt kind of off. Way back when the show first started, they took a while to get a regular structure set up, but finally got into their groove. And now … it’s off again. I’m hoping it all comes back together in the second half of “Islands”, which airs Monday, January 15th, 10/9C, on ABC.
My favorite line from this episode:
You gotta shake it off. Rub some dirt on it.” ~ Lea
How did you feel about the first half of “Islands”? What do you think is gonna happen with Shaun? Where is the show going from here? Please leave your thoughts in the comments.
