Empire -The Lady Doth Protest Review/Recap

Lucious Lyon
Take a moment to share:

Lucious Lyon is out for blood. With his memory intact and his temper flaring from losing custody of granddaughter, Bella Lyon, to the devious DuBois’s newest family pet Anika Lyon.  It’s a wonder he doesn’t go criminally insane (unless he’s already there) with everyone attacking his family.

Now that Lucious is “back” what can we expect?  Murder, mayhem, company takeover?  We are talking about Lucious, who would sooner stab you in the back and then walk over your body.  Too much?

I’m really surprised Cookie jumped on the “Lucious is back” bandwagon.  This is the first time she’s come off as a naïve individual and I’m not happy.  With all the subtle and not so subtle attacks on her family that she keeps missing. I really wanted a win when it came to Lucious’s memory loss.  Oh well, I guess #Teamcookie is being replaced with #Luciousisback  Why hasn’t the Lyon family hired a private investigator to follow the DuBois family?

Comfortable in my seat

Cookie makes a helluva CEO at Empire. Her no nonsense attitude and stylish flair keep me entertained every Wednesday on FOX. Are you ready for Lucious to take the helm again?  Taking a back seat to Cookie wouldn’t be a bad thing, it’s her time to shine.

Cookie really has an ear for the music business. She doesn’t let her rough edges stop her from making money for Empire. It’s refreshing to see Cookie hold her ground with Lucious when discussing Empire business matters. Excluding her from decision is no longer status quo.  It appears Lucious is not thrilled with this new attitude of leadership, but steps back (for now) and permits Cookie to take her place on the throne.

Bella Lyon

Each week I watch the Diana DuBois (Phylicia Rashad) plot, scheme and destroy the Lyon family little by little from the inside out. Witnessing the far reaching power of Ms. DuBois is quite masterful.  Think about it, she has enlisted therapist, lawyers, bankers, police officers, son and nephew to systematically bring down each and every Lyon for destroying her son Angelo DuBois’s (Taye Diggs) career.

Setting Hakeem Lyon up as he fights for the custody of his sweet daughter Bella, is ingenious.  The tapes don’t lie and technically neither did Hakeem.

His admission of his families’ dangerous undertakings gave enough evidence for the judge to rule against him. I was a bit surprised that he didn’t win.  I foolishly thought knowing a child’s favorite color, food and bedtime story would give Hakeem favor with the judge.  Anika did sleep with her father-in-law (husband) and stepson (boyfriend).  Confused?  Despite these messy relations, dangerous criminal dealings trumped bed follies.

Stripping custody of Bella from Hakeem is only strike one in this deadly DuBois plan to take down the Lyon’s.  Initially, I grappled with Hakeem missing all the signs of Diana DuBois mischievous plotting.  Why would he bare his soul to her?  He didn’t find it odd that she was asking about his family?  This is the same woman who initially kidnapped Bella. Perhaps I’m being to hard on Hakeem and his love for his daughter blinded him to everything else.

Tell the Truth

I found myself cringing at the screen with both Jamal and Andre.  Someone please tell them their love interest are no good.  Although it has come out yet, I think Detective Rose is working for Diana DuBois.  She is using Andres sex addiction to turn him into a talking canary. She wants to arrest him for the murder of Giuliana (Nia Long) and attempted murder of his father, Lucious.

Detective Rose shares a detail of crime she committed of planting a gun.  She opens the door for Andre to confess a secret that could potentially put him behind bars.  This part of the storyline I found unbelievable.  Andre is smarter than Detective Rose and won’t fall for this.  If he does confess I know he will have a plan in place to protect himself.

Surprise, Jamal’s deceitful boyfriend, Warren Hall (Terrell Carter) does have a moral compass. He’s fallen in love with Jamal (I think) – unless this is a trick to carry out Diana Dubois’ plan. I admit, Warren seems sincere and appears to have a change of heart.  If he does reveal his role in this underhanded plot, will Jamal forgive him or will sparks fly?  I think sparks will fly and we might have a lovers murder on our hands.

Empire returns Wednesday on FOX at 8:00pm

After watching this episode I’m left with three questions

  1. Will Diana DuBois be stopped
  2. Did Lucious regain his memory or is he lying
  3. Does Detective Rose work for Diana DuBois
