Episode 7: Escape From Casablanca

We start off the episode with a flashback to Casablanca, 1945. Cleopatra is there onboard a boat, but men board the boat ask to see papers.  They check the cargo and see the gold coffin.

Not Going Anywhere

Present Day in Casablanca, Danny asks Lexi if she’s ever seen the movie. She lies and says yes, but when Danny quizzes her, she fails. He suggests a movie night when all this over, so Lexi can see what she is missing out on. He goes to check-in at a hotel. This gives Lexi a chance to call Fabi and ask about her father’s involvement in the Brotherhood. Fabi denies he was part of it and wants her to focus on finding Cleopatra.

At the hotel, the card Reece gave Danny has been denied and he thinks Gwen may have frozen the accounts to find them. As they are leaving the hotel, Moroccan police start to move in towards them. They run, but two men give chase and capture Danny. It is Carlo Velardi and his men. Danny tries to escape, but a fight ensues.

Lexi stops, realizing Danny is no longer behind her and Gwen finds her. A fight ensues. I liked this sequence where they cut between both fights. Then when Danny busts through the wall and they escape, it was a great way to tie the two together.

Safe, For Now

As they are figuring out where to go next, Lexi’s insatiable appetite smelled lamb at a refugee camp and they were able to settle there for the night.

In Paris, we see Simon chipping out a piece of the medallion…

While at the refugee camp, Danny and Lexi spot a necklace with a design from Cleopatra’s sarcophagus. They get the name of the shop owner and leave the camp since they are now on wanted posters.

Shaw is Back

They go to see the owner, Salim Le Mer but are refused entry. Salim recognizes them and phones Carlo Velardi.

As Danny and Lexi assess their situation, they spot Shaw. He works for Le Mer and agrees to set up an appointment for them knowing that there is a finders fee for Cleopatra. (Everything is always about money with Shaw.) First, they need to get cleaned up and for some reason, Shaw is with Lexi as opposed to Danny. He suggests they stick together after Cleopatra is found because once the law catches up to them, Danny will be released but Lexi won’t. (I hope this is a bit of foreshadowing, letting us know that we will see more of Shaw after this season.)

I Will Tell You Everything

Back in Paris, Simon gets kidnapped by the Brotherhood. They find the medallion on him and he tells them that he took it from Jessica Wong. Fabi asks about him communicating with Lexi.

Getting Closer

Shaw gets them through to meet with Le Mer. He tells them that Carlo Velardi has a bounty on their heads, but Danny explains that he can get significantly more cash, legal if he helps them.  He agrees, but his men have to go on the hunt with them.

They meet with the designer of the necklace and she tells them the story of her father and uncle. They died in 1945, not long after they built a counter. The counter was large enough to hold a sarcophagus, but before they got the chance to open it, Gwen busts through the door with Interpol.  Together they break the counter apart and find the gold sarcophagus, but no Cleopatra. Gwen wants to arrest Danny and Lexi, but Chief Hamza lets them stay at one of Le Mer’s seized properties. They send out a message that they found Cleopatra hoping that Farouk will take the bait and show up.

She Loves Me, She Loves Me Not

While they are at the house, Lexi found a stash of money. Of course, Danny tells her they can’t keep it, but she dreams about places she would go.  They share a moment in this scene and they finally get that opportunity to kiss. After spending the night together, Lexi gets a message on her burner phone and Danny finds it. He questions her about it and she tells him that she has sources and assets. Feeling betrayed, he doesn’t trust her anymore to join them in getting Farouk.

The Usual Suspects

Danny meets with Gwen and goes over surveillance. Not staying behind, Lexi is scoping out the market from the rooftops.

Danny spots Omar and so does Carlo’s men. As Omar turns around, Carlo’s men try to shoot him, but he escapes. Danny sees Lexi and they both chase after Omar, but it is Gwen that finally catches him. A fun side note, during the chase we find another Indiana Jones reference when Lexi and Danny come face to face with a snake. Who could resist saying that iconic line, “ Snakes, it had to be snakes.”  Danny catches up to Gwen, but Lexi isn’t there.

Leaving Casablanca

Getting ready to transport the sarcophagus, Gwen has one more fugitive she needs to bring in. She slaps cuffs on Danny and he boards the plane with Carlo Velardi, Omar, and the sarcophagus. Carlo approaches Danny and thanks him for catching Omar. He calls off the bounty and offers his protection. He tells Danny that this could be the beginning of a great friendship. (I wonder where this is going…)

Shaw is waiting for Lexi, with a private jet. Aya approaches him with a letter from Lexi. She asks Shaw to take Aya to Oslo and he obliges. We then cut to the refugee camp where Lexi left Le Mer’s stash money.

Back on the plane, one final passenger is boarded as we see Gwen escorting Lexi, who turned herself in.

And if that wasn’t enough for the episode, the final scene shows Simon listening in on a conversation from the Brotherhood. They took the medallion he had, but not before he placed a microphone in it. He overhears Fabi say that Lexi has not found out the truth about her father.

Thoughts

This was my favorite episode of the season so far. We got to see a side of Lexi that has been hinted at briefly before. She has a softer side, but we still got to see her master thief skills in this episode too.

Again, I find myself asking, ‘Who is Simon Hardwick?’  I enjoy this mysterious character and every episode he’s in, we seem to find another skill set that he seems to possess.

We are getting closer to Cleopatra, although there wasn’t another hint as to where we are going next. I think the only place our cast will be heading is to an interrogation room. How will they get out of this?
