Younger Season 6 Episode 8
Who saw the teaser for this episode? Younger TV promised this is the biggest episode of the entire series so far. It’s the episode you’ve been waiting for so here we go!
Is That My Coat?
We begin with Liza having breakfast with Charles, and his daughter calls to ask him to bring her forgotten book report to school. Liza offers
to bring the book report to the school for him where she runs into Pauline. Liza wears Paulines’ coat since she grabbed it from Charles’ place, and Pauline does her best to make that awkward for Liza. I must admit, I would do the same.
Pauline makes an effort to extend an olive branch to Liza and offers a cease-fire between the adults. Pauline offers to add Liza to the list of approved adults to pick up the daughters at school since Liza will be around for long haul.
How’d That Happen?
In the office, Liza is describing her interaction with Pauline to Charles and somehow get’s roped into having lunch with Pauline tomorrow. Liza says this 
Work Wife
Diana asks to speak with Charles. As his work wife, she wants to share her big news with Charles first; She’s engaged to Enzo! I’m so excited about this, by the way. I can’t wait to see the necklace Diana chooses for her wedding day. Diana asks Charles for his blessing, which he awkwardly but freely gives. Diana goes in for a long and strained hug and hints to Charles that she can’t announce it herself since there’s no ring. Charles takes the hint and offers to announce it for her. I love Diana’s subtle yet bold manner.
The Big Announcement
In a team meeting, Kelsey is describing they need a debutant for Publisher’s Weekly event. Editors escort first-time authors into the publishing world. Zane suggests Pauline since Marriage Vacation was a huge hit. Liza agrees to ask Pauline since they’re having lunch today. Diana motions to Charles to make her announcement. When Charles tells everyone Diana is engaged, everyone offers their congratulations, and Liza is overly ecstatic. Her reaction is definitely over the top.
One Hug A Year
As Liza follows Diana into her office, Liza offers to help with any wedding preparations. In true Diana fashion, she says she only needs Liza on the day of the wedding, to help her get dressed, run interference with the in-laws, etc. Liza says, “like a maid of honor.” Diana says, “if you want to promote yourself to that, fine.” Liza goes in for a hug, Diana hesitates. “You get one hug a year, and this is it.”
Oh Maggie
I Need A Favor
At lunch, Pauline and Liza converse politely, but the convo feels forced. Pauline asks about Kelsey, and Liza asks how Pauline’s second book is coming along. Pauline confesses she should have stayed at Millennial and stayed with Liza. She asks Liza to review a few chapters of her book. Liza agrees but asks Pauline for a favor in return. She needs Pauline to be the debutant at the ball, and Pauline happily agrees.
Not So Young
Later, Pauline is back at the school and chatting with the secretary. The secretary comments she’s happy to see Pauline and Liza making friends. Pauline says what can you do, men are always running off with their twenty-something assistants. The secretary says she’s not twenty-something. She shows Pauline Liza’s driver’s license, after saying she’s not supposed to share this information. Come on, lady!
Why Pauline? Why?
At the ball, Pauline approaches Charles to warn him that Liza has been lying to him and that she’s 42 years old. Charles confesses that he didn’t want her to find out like this, but before she can respond, Pauline is pulled away to go on stage.
Liza escorts Pauline onto the stage, and Pauline launches into a speech stating she’s happy to be here with Liza, whom she put her trust. She is currently writing about a wife who comes back from a writing sabbatical to find she’s lost her husband to his young assistant. Only she was stunned to learn that the truth was so much more dramatic than imagined. She turns to Liza and calls her out as, “THIS ASSISTANT,” she is not the young assistant she claims to be. “Liza Miller is 42 years old, and she’s been lying shamelessly about who she is for years.”
This enrages Diana, who stands up to defend Liza. She calls Pauline sad and petty and jealous of the person your ex-husband fell in love with. Liza has to interrupt Diana and tell her that it’s all true. Shocked, Diana turns to Charles and Kelsey and realizes they’re not shocked at all. Diana storms out and Kelsey and Liza go after her. In the street, Diana is visibly shaken and collapses and says, “Call 911”.
Well That’s Just Peachy
Liza and Charles are at the hospital as Enzo rushes in. The doctors have said it was a panic attack, but she won’t let them in to see her. Enzo goes in to talk with Diana, and she tells him about Liza’s lie. It turns out everyone knew Liza’s secret -except- for Diana. They made her into the village idiot.
Put That On Hold
Charles is on the phone with Pauline and agrees to talk to her lawyer. She wants to revisit the custody agreement. Charles apologizes to Liza for not being honest with Pauline and saving Liza from this embarrassment. Liza knows Charles was protecting her. They agree that moving in is probably not a great idea right now.
Liza is at home when Josh calls to tease her about being an Upper Eastside lady now. She tells him she’s not, she’s staying put. She confesses she made a mess of everything and she doesn’t know what to do. Josh offers to talk about it. Leave it to Josh to be there for Liza at just the right moment. He’s good like that.
Damage Control
Charles, Zane, Lauren, and Kelsey are reading an article about the big reveal of Liza’s secret. Kelsey knows this is a PR nightmare, and Millennial needs to do some major damage control. Zane expresses his clear annoyance that no one told him about Liza’s secret. Lauren condescending towards Liza as she walks up. Liza knows she needs to make individual apologies, but first, she needs to see Diana.
Apologies
As she walks into Diana’s office, Diana says she is drafting Liza’s termination letter. Diana is frustrated, saying, “I can’t keep up with all the lies.” First, she had to handle the fact that Liza was Charles’ secret affair. Now she’s hurt she’s come to care about Liza under the pretense of such a big lie. Diana says, “you must have had a good laugh at my expense.” Diana can’t understand what self-respecting adult would go to those lengths for this job!! Who would hold my hand when I was alone? Who would convince me to fight for Enzo? Liza says, “You can’t win the game without playing the game, and my life opened up when I took my shot.” Liza pleads, I did all of those things “for you.” Diana gave her the biggest opportunity she’s ever had, and she had to take her shot.
Diana understands that Liza had to do what she had to do, she can respect that. However, if they are going to forge forward, honest has to be the best policy. Diana adds, “You’re no longer my maid of honor; you’re my OLD maid of honor.” Liza laughs, and Diana says, “that’s not a joke.”
Diana also starts to add something else, but she pauses and asks Liza for the numbers on the new releases. Liza responds, “I love you too!”
I Need More Time
I think this episode was good but also lacked a little bit of the drama I would have wanted to see with such a long-held secret being revealed. After all these seasons of trying to keep Liza’s age a secret, I think her true age could have been revealed in a much more explosive manner. I also believe as close as Diana and Liza have become, the writer should have given Diana more time to be upset by this betrayal. It all resolved too quickly for them. I’m starting to agree with most of the online commentary; this show needs to be longer episodes in order to give the dramatic moments enough time to build and to show the fallout.
