The InBetween Episode 7
Things are finally heating up this week on The InBetween, but is it too late for this show to redeem itself? Let’s dive into the episode.
The Case
Asante and Hackett are called into the scene of a gruesome car fire only moments after Cassie has a vision of burning to death in her car. Before this, she sees a bobblehead on her dashboard. At the scene, they discover the victim is a man currently estranged from his wife. The couple was to divorce because of differences about a home renovation.
This information is relayed to them by the contractor doing the home renovation, who oddly appeared just before the car went up in flames. Gio tells them that he was there to pick up tools he left at the house and also relays he was annoyed the couple wanted him also to exterminate a fire ant problem.
While they agreed, they let them go before the job could complete. The duo goes to speak to the ex-wife, who tells them she didn’t do it but doesn’t appear to have an alibi. Hackett doesn’t think she is capable of murder, and this proved true when she too is killed in a fiery car explosion.
New Details
But when forensics reveals that an accelerant in the car belongs to the same ant insecticide as the contractor’s, things get suspicious. Gio denies involvement as he picks up his son from his ex. They share custody, but the detectives think they have enough to arrest him possibly, so they take him in front of Vera and his son.
Another wrench makes this fall through. Gio has a solid alibi for both murders. It is Hackett’s idea to let him go and see if they’ll lead him to the murderer as it was his bug spray that made the killing. What happens next? Gio enters his trailer, and it goes up in flames. Because the detectives were following him, they save him in time. He’ll have burns covering the majority of his body.
The Fire Starter
This ultimately leads them to the question: who would want to hurt Gio and the couple? Gio’s ex. She wants back together with him and found out he was having an affair with the other couple’s wife. She is upset and angry and tells her young son this. Because Gio taught his son how to fix cars, he learned how to make the explosions. In the precinct, he admits his mother hated the woman she caught him having an affair with and wanted her dead. The husband was a mix-up and a mistake.
Gio’s son just wanted to make his mother happy again. Creepy.
Cassie’s Case
Cassie meanwhile is struggling with one of the most terrifying ghosts yet. Who is it? There is a new waitress at her job, Andy, covering for her bartender friend, Will. At first, Cassie thinks that Andy is bad news since she keeps getting headaches around her. She has Hackett look into the woman and finds out she was a victim of stalking.
The man died on a ridge after following her up there and falling accidentally to his death in pursuit of her. Max, the creepy stalker, believes she was in love with him. He’s still after her in his death. And I must say: he is absolutely one of the most believable bad guys on this show. His rage and “she is mine” mentality is effortless, and the actor is brilliant.
Cassie confronts Andy and tells her she’d like to help, but she at first isn’t sure how. What do you know? Guess who pops up like Casper the Friendly Creepy Murderous Ghost other than Ed Roven himself! He knows how to get rid of Max, but I suspect that it won’t be without a price. The two of them set up a plan and go back to where Max died. Cassie tells Andy to do a cleansing spell, but in reality, she is using Ed Roven’s help to get rid of Max.
Unfortunately, it’s anticlimactic. Max, enraged taunts Cassie, unaware that Roven is there. Ed charges Max, and they fall over the cliff, and Max is gone. Simple as that. Quite boring.
Overall, all’s well that ends well there.
A Sad Ending
But, all’s well that doesn’t end well. During this episode, Cassie keeps seeing Sally, Asante’s fiancé appear to her. She doesn’t say anything, but stares. He found out earlier in the episode her brain has shown some activity. While Cassie keeps it quiet, only telling Hackett, she hopes it is a good sign and not a bad one.
It is a bad one. She finally sees a vision of the couple. Sally is packing for Seattle and asking if she can bring his college sweatshirt. She reaches into the drawer and finds the engagement ring, to which she quickly hides before he comes into the ring. The two are cute and happy, and it ends, but Cassie knows it’s a bad sign.
She goes to the hospital after talking to Hackett to find Asante sitting alone. Sally is gone. Cassie gives him some solace, revealing that Sally knew she loved him and had plans to propose. Asante is upset but welcomes Cassie’s company, and I suspect that this won’t be the last time we see Sally, perhaps.
Thoughts
Overall, another strong episode. I give major kudos to the actor who plays Max. He holds one of the most believable performances I’ve seen on the show thus far and had great chemistry with Cassie. Second, the little boy was equally creepy, and I think the two of them made for an interesting plot.
Ed Roven returns! Cassie finally accepts his help, but at what cost? I suspect in the next couple episodes we learn he wants something else from her. But, I also have some weird feeling they are more connected than he lets on. I wouldn’t be surprised if in the finale they reveal he is her father or something. Why is he so obsessed with her?
Surprised they killed off Asante’s fiancé so soon if I’m honest. I think we may be seeing a set up for a future couple between him and Cassie, though.
The Bad
The visions are supposed to be unique and different, I get it. But sometimes they are so weird and poorly done that they take away from the plot. Special effects make or break a show and other than the bobblehead melting in the car, none of them really wow me. That is disappointing, but not a surprise either.
Overall, I enjoyed this episode, but I don’t think it’s going to be enough to keep the show afloat another season.
