The InBetween Episode 6
What does the supernatural world of Seattle, Washington have in store for us this week?
The episode starts with the anniversary of the “Newlywed Killer”, a murderer who has gone uncaught for years, killing a couple every year on the same day. Detectives Hackett and Asante are on the case. They want to catch him before he strikes again.
Meanwhile, at the Hackett household, Cassie spends the morning with Brian. She is helping him clean up the kitchen when she goes into a vision as if she is being drowned underwater. She is concerned, but there is not much she can do. At the same time, she also notices that Brian is acting strangely. He is repeating himself but shrugs it off.
The Killer Strikes Again
Detective Hackett and Asante are called to a murder: it fits the profile. There is a difference than before. The male victim was able to call the police before he was murdered, so the killer had to rush and leave. He lives behind a pink flower petal.
The sister to the female victim says her sister felt like she was being watched, stalked even in the days leading up to her death. Outside, they called in a retired detective who seemingly has a past with them both. He is going to help with the case.
Cassie’s Past
We switch to Cassie at work, where she sees someone named Melinda. They went to high school together, seemingly. The two are friendly and Cassie seems excited to see her. On the pier, Melinda admits she came to see her for a reason. She talks about a classmate who died, Craig, and how Cassie saw him when they were teenagers. Melinda was the only one who believed her, but she then ran away because of her struggles.
This sends Cassie into a vision on a road, where a car dodges a deer and crashes into a pole. The woman in the vision is Melinda’s ex-fiance, who died in the accident following a fight. Melinda feels guilty about it and wants Cassie to see if she can talk to her. She agrees.
Later, Cassie takes a bathroom break at work and is fixing her make up when she begins to get cut in a vision until the mirror is covered in blood. It spells Ashley. She immediately takes it Hackett and they are a bit confused by the news. There is no one named Ashley involved in the case.
Profiling the Newlywed Killer
Asante starts the next scene, profiling our murderer as the group tries to figure out the motive. It is an interesting dynamic to see the teamwork together–it isn’t often they play off each other as a group like this. The male victim always seems to be tortured more, but the woman is an important part of the crime. They wonder if this has to do with what has caused the murderer to commit the crimes. Did a woman leave him? A new hit shows that the wife of the most recent victim may have been having an affair. They track him down and bring him in for questioning.
Clay tells them that he wasn’t harassing Shelly, they were catching up. They dated years ago and she was complaining about her marriage at the bar where they met up. They ended up sleeping together, but as they should be, the detectives are less than convinced.
He admits that she was the one to end it, after receiving flowers at her work. She assumes it was her lover, Clay who sent them, but he did not. They were pink carnations like found at the crime scene. Ooh, that is interesting.
On the Road
Cassie heads to where Melinda’s fiance was killed and the daylight turns to night before her eyes. She witnesses the crash a second time but runs up to Jenna to see if she has a message for Melinda. The woman does not say a word, but Cassie senses something is off. The vision replaces before her, a second time. It keeps repeating, over and over again.
Back at Brian and Tom’s house, Cassie talks with Brian. She explains what happened on the road, and talks about Craig in high school. Cassie says she only knew him as a ghost, but she doesn’t know what happened to him. She left school before she ever found out.
Brian tries to help her figure out why the crash may keep repeating. Cassie wonders if the engagement ring has something to do with the pull she felt. She compares it to a weight, something that still links them.
Symbol of Love
Pink carnations are a sign of a woman’s love, apparently. They seem to be the weird connection between several of the victims, but they aren’t sure why.
They track Shelly’s finances to a bakery which may give them a lead. The owner tells them Shelly was in the bakery several times, admits that there is center across the street that perhaps she frequented. The owner of the center, Lila does not help them. They are anonymous meetings; it sounds like perhaps Shelly had a drinking or drug problem.
But, nope. Zayn tells them it is not that; he links the address of the center to an interesting group. It is a newlywed support group. According to their website, it helps people who struggle with their new marriage figure out how to fix it. This may be the key they are missing, but because they can’t get the list of members, they feel stuck. How are they going to confirm the other newlyweds were involved with the meetings?
Ticket?
Cassie goes to make Hackett tea later that night when she can tell he is exhausted about the case. She steps into her kitchen as pink carnation petals fall all over and she holds a piece of paper in her hands. It is a ticket. The next morning, Hackett and Asante get to work, wondering what it may mean.
Meanwhile, Cassie meets with her friend Melinda about what has happened. She tells her that she is stuck in her death, experiencing it over and over again. The ring has kept her here, but not in a good way because Melinda wants her to come back. Cassie tells her that she isn’t at peace and suggests the only way to make this better is to take the ring off. Melinda is upset but agrees. Cassie says she’ll go back to make sure it works.
Don’t Mess With a Woman…
The ticket links them to a possible new lead, a man named Wayne Modell who they arrest. He was the person who delivered the flowers to Shelly’s gym. He tells them that he wasn’t the one who bought the flowers, delivered them for the woman who bought them. A redhead. Ooh, what a switch. A female serial killer is always interesting. Lila, the woman we met earlier may be our killer.
She was once engaged to be married and pink carnations were a big part of it. Ashley, her fiance left her for another woman. They worry that Ashley and his new wife are the next on the list.
At Cassie’s house, she has a vision of drowning in a bathtub by Lila. This sends Hackett and Asante into high gear; it means that Lila is already at Ashley’s house and it might be too late.
The Showdown
Hackett and Asante arrive at Ashley’s house to arguing coming from upstairs. It is Lila’s voice we hear. Hackett comes into the room and pulls his gun, but he is forced to drop his weapon as Lila has a gun pointed at her head. He chooses to use his words for the time being. Where is Asante? Ashley is injured pretty badly, but alive. Lila is talking, ranting about men who don’t want to be married.
Asante comes through the window with just enough time to injure Lila as she is about to pull the trigger. Everyone gets to live.
Meanwhile, Cassie and Brian head to the accident site and she’s so happy to see that it worked. Cassie admits that she notices Brian has been off and she wants him to get checked out. She needs him, she tells him. He agrees to get checked out.
The team celebrates their win at the precinct, then at the bar where Cassie works. Cassie and Asante bond, which is nice to see. Much to her surprise as she cleans up, she notices Jenna, the finance outside. She thanks her for her help and the episode ends.
Thoughts
I’m just not impressed. The show is easy enough to follow along with, and I guess for the casual TV watcher, might be enough. The visions are sometimes cool or creepy, but they feel predictable and forced at times. There is just something that is missing from this show and wish there was something more. The emotion falls flat, I suppose.
Even if the show has an awesome next few episodes, I don’t think it’ll be enough. There just isn’t enough for me to be invested or care enough about the characters. There are gaps between storylines, which are frustrating to me as a viewer.
Overall, I just don’t think the show has the chance to be renewed.
