Episode Two of The Crossing aired on April 9th, on ABC.
So I had a feeling after last week ended with Sheriff Jude Ellis saying to Reece, “You wanna start from the beginning?” that this week would involve flashbacks (or flashforwards, depending on how you look at it)—and indeed it did.

Through a series of flashforwards that are really flashbacks, we find out that Leah wasn’t born to Reece, but Reece found her as a baby and took pity on her. She went against the APEX, and took this “common” baby in. But Leah developed a rash and came down with Mantle’s Disease, the virus that APEX has inflicted upon humanity. In a desperate attempt to save Leah, the child that she now loves, Reece gives her own blood, which makes Leah immune to the virus—but there’s evidently a catch, without Reece, and her blood, Leah is still in danger of Mantle’s Disease.
Back here, in “The Long Peace”, Reece tries to tell Jude: “She can’t be away from me, you don’t understand.” And now, back at the camp where the refugees have been hidden away, the rash is back. Leah is whisked away into an infirmary, but is it too late? Has humanity now been exposed to the very virus that the APEX used in the future to kill us all?
Jude continues to help Reece try to find Leah. He figures out where the camp is that the refugees are being held at, but doesn’t take Reece there. Instead, he sets up a meeting with Agent Ren. Only Ren’s phone has been tapped and a team of black ops swoop in to take Reece. Reece, of course, being the badass that she is, gets away. At the end of the show, she turns up in a store, dripping blood, and asks a clerk, “How far to Port Canaan?”
Jude’s Past
More hints of Jude’s troubling past were dropped when he calls a friend in LA and asks for advice about Reece and helping her. The friend reminds him of the “Doucette Case” and tells him that he needs to put his family first this time.
Meanwhile
The refugees have a very touching memorial for the 400 that didn’t make it out of the water. We also find out that APEX took Caleb and Rebecca’s daughter while they slept. Leah reminds Rebecca of her daughter.
And Lindauer talks his superior at HSI into letting him handle the refugees, and to keeping it “off the books.” He then makes a call to a mysterious woman who tells him there is no future for the refugees.
I get the feeling that Lindauer may not be as bad as I thought he was, but this mystery woman is definitely bad news.
And hey, does anyone else have suspicions about the deputy, Nestor? I get really weird vibes about him.
Sadly, the ratings dropped for this week. And honestly, I get it. I think the show set up some promises that so far it hasn’t delivered on. Making all those comparisons to Lost might have cost them. But I’m willing to stick with it and see what happens.
