SWAT Season Finale “Hoax”

SWAT season finale

SWAT Season Finale!

The final episode of the season starts off with a pretty strong message. Something we’ve been seeing and hearing a lot in the news lately and has, unfortunately, become an ongoing issue. Cops taking innocent lives of black men, women, and kids, claiming that crimes were committed.

Not-So-Criminal Minds

A young Hondo is shown playing a classic game of Ding-Dong-Ditch with his friends. But what starts off as an innocent prank almost ends in tragedy, until Hondo steps in. In previous episodes, we saw that Hondo’s dad as an activist, fighting for those who tragically lost their lives due to racial profiling and discrimination.

After the cops let young Hondo and his friends go, he goes home to his father and explains what happens. Hondo’s father then asks him a question which we now know, plays a very critical role in his career choice. He asks “What do you think you can do about it, Hondo?”.

“Some people fear you, without even knowing you” – Daniel Harrelson Sr.

Be the change…

Flashforward to present day, we see Hondo chose to be a cop to narrow the gap that separates “blue and black”. Every day he goes out to prove that not all cops are bad and not all black men are either and does it well. As team leader, he shows everyone what he’s capable of.

Lucy, you got some ‘splainin’ to do

The team gets called to a hostage situation at a barricaded house. A man, Christian Baty, is holding his girlfriend and kids captive, threatening to kill them and himself. Jess updates the team on the situation and mentions that thermal recognition can’t tell which one is Baty or the hostages.

Luca finally gets to use his toy to breach the house while Chris and Street, after he showed up late, scale the roof. They search the house and take Baty into custody, but he’s alone.

Wait, why did it show more than one person on the thermal recognition?

Hondo’s spidey senses start tingling when the guy says he doesn’t have a girlfriend and has no idea what they’re talking about. They take a look around and notice equipment for bomb building and a list possible targets, black neighborhoods.

The real question is, who is this guy and what the hell is up to…Oh, and why is Street late?

Cue final theme song sing-along, for the season…

After getting Baty a ride to the station, an FBI agent lets the team know they’ve been looking into him and are there to assist if they need extra resources. Apparently, Baty has been on the FBI watchlist for being part of a white pride group that fears minorities taking over the country. The FBI got word about that same group planning something big that will be going down the same day.

Wings on pigs…

When the team finds out what neighborhoods are being targeted, Hondo asks Luca and Deacon to track down his dad in one of the areas. Down at the station, Baty comes face to face with Hondo and the FBI agent. He claims there are hate groups in the black neighborhoods that are threatening to kill white cops.

Hondo thinks Baty is telling the truth and looks really concerned. We’ve seen Hondo in between a rock and a hard place before, but nothing like this. He joined the force to make a difference in both worlds, but now the two are colliding. Can he stop it before things get too out of hand?

Vote for Plank

Jess and Tan find a possible location of where the 911 call to Baty’s house might have come from. Just when they are about to have it checked out, they notice Plank on TV. He’s stepping down from Police Commissioner to run for Governor.

Healthy

Annie stops by the station to tell Deacon that she has a clean bill of health and that he’ll be stuck with her for a long time. Aww, they’re freakin’ cute! So Deacon tells Luca that he wants to surprise Annie somehow.

Breaking down

Street’s mom calls him in a panic, freaking out about his uncle being at the diner she works at. He seems confused and says that he lives nowhere near them and she hasn’t seen him in over 20 years. She’s visibly terrified and insists that it’s him and he needs to get there right away. Street leaves Chris and lies to Hondo about where he’s off to. Oh, brother…

Meanwhile…

Hondo’s dad is found and brought down the station. He can clearly see that Hondo is worked up about something so he asks. Hondo tells him what’s going on and he insists on going into the neighborhoods to help. Hondo tells him that he can’t do his job if he’s just worried about him the whole time.

“It is my turn to take care of this community.” – Hondo

After following up on the location they found, Jess tracks down the caller and what kind of equipment was used to make the call. Turns out the FBI agent that was so helpful earlier, is the one that made the call to 911 about Baty! WTF! Jess wants answers, now.

He made the call because his supervisors didn’t take the threats seriously the first time. So, he faked the call and used SWAT to get into Baty’s house to expose him and his plans. Hicks isn’t happy about this either. Seems like the Agent did it for the greater good, still bad news though.

Back for Revenge

Mumford and Rocker step in for Street being MIA. Hondo asks Chris where Street really is and finds out that he lied to him. Street gets to his mom and calms her down. Turns out it is his uncle…dun dun duuuun. The plot thickens.

Streets uncle and mom are getting into it behind the diner about a necklace. His uncle wants it back because it belonged to his mom. Street ultimately makes her give him the necklace back and tells him to stay away from them both.

Eyes Everywhere

The team is tailing Baty after they’re forced to release him from custody. He heads to one of the neighborhoods that are supposedly being targeted. Hondo called in favors to locals to watch Baty for them.

Hondo’s locals tailed Baty to a busy area with street vendors. Baty is meeting with another man when he spots the tail Hondo put on them. They both make a run for it but the team corners the man Baty was meeting with. He tries to create a smokescreen with his motorcycle to get away but ends up falling off instead…BOOM. His backpack had a bomb in it and the impact of him hitting the ground detonates it.

Turns out, the same stuff in the guys’ backpack was made from the materials found in Baty’s house. Supposedly it’s known for accidental detonation, well we know that now. They know there are more of those bombs out there so the plan is to track down Baty’s other known associates.

Governor Plank

Plank is down at the station to apologize to Jess about the way she found out about him running for Governor. Jess is pissed. She figured out that he’s using their reform proposals as leverage to get more votes against the competition.

Fake News

Deacon tracks down videos about what Baty told them hate groups were planning on doing. Turns out that the videos were pieced together to make it look like real threats but they’re fake. Baty and his band of merry men think the threats are real and it’s about to become a real problem for all of LA.

Hondo remembers of an event happening down at a local park in one of the targeted areas. One of the groups in the videos will be there, and he thinks his dad will be too. They head down to the park with the event already underway. Hondo calls his dad, but instead of yelling at him to get out of there he asks for his help to evacuate the area.

The team gets to the park and starts to direct everyone out of the park, right before a trash can bomb go off. After a few of them go off in different areas of the park, Hondo figures out that the explosives were just distractions to make people run in a certain direction, towards a bigger bomb. Baty is there setting them off one by one.

Hondo spots a truck in the direction the crowd is going and tells everyone to stay away from it. As they divert the crowd away from the truck, Hondo spots Baty on a hill about to detonate the truck but shoots him in the shoulder before he can. The team is frantically trying to evacuate the park without any casualties when Chris spots the rest of Baty’s “friends”.

Hondo heads over to where Baty dropped but he’s gone. He hopped in the truck that was supposed to detonate and takes off driving. Baty is hightailing it through traffic, taking cars out left and right. Hondo and Street are in the SWAT truck chasing after Baty.

He’s headed straight toward a farmers market to try and take out a bunch of people. Jess and Hicks tell Hondo he has to stop him before he gets there. Hondo is b-lining it straight toward the truck.

“Hondo, we’re not gonna be able to cut him off” – Street

“That’s not the plan Street. Brace yourself!” – Hondo

Anyone else holding their breath?

BOOM! Hondo drives right through the truck setting off the bomb, causing a massive explosion. Everyone at the station is watching, hoping Hondo and Street are alright.

“Command to 20 David, Are you there?” – Jess

.

.

Of course, he’s there Jess, your beau isn’t going anywhere.

Looks like Hondo saved the day with this one. The whole neighborhood is grateful, shaking Hondo’s hand and thanking him. Finally, his dad understands the path Hondo chose.

Back at HQ…

Hondo is talking to Jess about Street and his recent, erratic, behavior. She tells him that she trusts his judgment and will back whatever he decides to do.

Coming clean…

Street comes clean to Hondo about lying and everything that happened with his mom. Hondo asks if his mom is alright, but then kicks Street off SWAT. Street is pissed and upset. Hondo explains that he let him slide way too many times. What kind of a leader would he be if didn’t set an example for that kind of behavior?

“You don’t kick people out of a family” – Street

Well, I didn’t see that coming…

Surprise, Surprise

Deacons surprise is underway with everyone, but Street, present and looking sharp AF. Everyone gets ready for Annie’s arrival. When she gets there everyone thinks they pulled it off but no one knows Annie like Deacon. She knew the whole time, but not everything…

Renewing their vows wasn’t the only surprise. Deacon is going to use all of his saved up sick days to stay home and be with the kids while she goes back to school, now that she is healthy. But, Annie has a different plan. She tells Deacon that she can’t go back to work or school because not everything came up normal in her tests.

SHE’S PREGNANT! Kay number 5 on the way!

What a way to end a season! Bravo SWAT writers, bravo!

It’s different seeing a season end in sort of a high note when so many shows end in some sort of dramatic cliffhanger. I was waiting for an explosion in the background or something to leave us hanging until season two. Even though Street got kicked off of SWAT, it was a great ending. I think this is where Erica will be put into play for the next season.

Thanks for following along for season one! ‘Till next time SWATTERS!!
