Killjoys Season 5 Episode 8
This weeks episode focuses on the theme of family, friends and teamwork.
A Funny, Creepy Beginning
The episode starts off with upbeat music. Johnny is dancing around the ship, first in his pajamas, then in his work outfit. He is touching and nuzzling all of Lucy’s terminals and making sexual talk with Lucy.
To Leith
Dutch and Zeph go to Leith to where she was raised. It’s a lot like an Amish community. They go there because Zeph tells them about a tapestry they have hidden away that tells the history of the J. It was interesting to find out that Zeph wasn’t kicked out for her love of science but for burning down the granary. She found out that the grain was poisonous and burnt it down to save her family.
A Lesson from Fancy
Before they go Fancy gives them a history of Zeph’s people. He tells Dutch how Zeph’s ancestors studied each end of the J. But when greedy business people used the knowledge to make weapons and money, they settled on Leith and gave up science.
Both women were surprised Fancy know that and liked reading history.
On Leith, they run into Zeph’s sister Zaia (played by Hilary McCormack who is Kelly’s real sister) who takes them to the Great Mother (played by Jennifer Wigmore).
Drugged
While the Great Mother talks to Zeph and Dutch, she tells them they are not weak and she drugged them. While In her drugged trance she sees Pip again, and is pregnant with a daughter. But she realizes it’s not him when he blames her for his death.
It was great to see Pip again, but I wish he hadn’t died though. They had such great chemistry.
Waking Up and Having a Panic Attack
Dutch shakes her awake and she then has a panic attack when she realizes they threw them into something called “the Hole”. The attack is brought on by the memory of being put in there when she was eight, and then again at the age of ten when they left her in there for three months.
Zeph Shows her Strength
After being let out and Dutch being removed from the village, Zeph’s mother tries to talk her into staying. Zeph doesn’t buy it and knocks her mother out. And goes to the tapestry room and downloads its information for Lucy.
Blood Family Vs. Chosen family
Choosing between a chosen family and blood family is fairly easy. Especially when one has a blood family like Zeph’s who wouldn’t accept her. Thus when she finds Dutch and Zaia fighting, she shoots Zaia to stop her. It’s not a killing blow though, and I’m glad of that because I would hate for Zeph to become a cold-hearted killer.
A Moment Between Sisters
Back on Lucy, Dutch and Zeph have a touching moment while Lucy analyzes the data. And Zeph tells Dutch that she’s her sister and Dutch says it right back.
Capture the Flag
At the jail, Johnny, and D’avin put together teams of prisoners to play capture the flag. This is done for team building because they need help stopping the lady.
D’avin: Johnny’s Wingman?
After seeing Johnny’s fun dance at the beginning of the episode, all throughout the episode D’avin asks all the woman if they are single. All of them get confused, thinking he is looking for someone.
Capture the flag was going well until D’avin finds one of the guards dead. Everyone looks towards the prisoners as suspects, but it ends up being the psych doctor who did it.
Calvert Saves the day
When the doctor finally reveals himself he releases a knockout gas, to kill them later. But Calvert grabs the flag and harpoons it into the doctor.
A Family Dinner on Lucy
Once again the show brings up the idea of chosen family. Calvert, Johnny, Dutch, D’avin, Zeph, Fancy, and one of the prisoners all sit down to eat on Lucy. Zeph jokes she’s in love with Fancy because he can cook. Johnny tells her to get in line.
And Dutch makes a comment that the reason they’ll win is that they have a family and the lady doesn’t.
But she is wrong.
Khylin and the Lady
All throughout the episode we see how much Khylin cares for the lady. She’s grown to see him as a father. Even when Khylin had the chance to kill the lady, he didn’t have the heart to. The episode ends with her promising him the universe and him taking her hand. We now see he sees her as a daughter.
Final thoughts
The lack of Pree and Gared made me a little sad, but it was nice to see Zeph’s backstory. It was also great to see Johnny and D’avin just being brothers and having fun. This last season is really giving us all the feels for sure.
It amazes me how this show gets better with every episode. And unlike many shows, it tackles many subjects. I think showing people finding their chosen family when their real ones turn their back on them is an important issue.
I also love all the light-hearted funny moments in-between. The fact there’s only two more episodes makes my heart ache.
