Instinct Episode 6
Watching a loved one die is hard. Watching a loved one die in the emergency room is even harder. Knowing a loved one died because the hospital was negligent and never getting justice is even worse. This week’s episode not only opened up a piece of Dylan’s past, but touched on a very sensitive subject: how far will one go to find justice for a lost loved one?
The Crime
The episode starts with a body being found and is linked to a man named Theodore Burton. Turns out the victim is his stock broker and Dylan learns he has an appointment at Potter and Marley, his stock firm, that morning. Lizzie gives Dylan her replica badge and they head in to take in Theodore. After Theo grabs one of the workers – taking her hostage – Dylan gently tries to talk him down, letting Theo know that someone will listen to him.
We find out Theo is upset because he feels like he had his money stolen from him by the stock brokers. I am more than sure a lot of people feel the same exact way – it’s just a good thing not everyone turns to violence to deal with the anger.
When the rest of backup arrives and scares Theo, the hostage knees him and sticks his own knife into his leg.
Theo is taken to CrossTown Hospital where he is labeled in stable condition. After Lizzie and Dylan witness a nurse tell a man that he has to take his sick wife back to the nursing home, even though he protests and says she will just be back the next day, they hear a dog bark. After the nurse yells at the woman for having a dog, they hear alarms go off and follow the nurse back to Theo’s room and he dies in front of them.

After receiving an anonymous tip that Theo wasn’t the only person to be “murdered” by the hospital, they go and talk to the heads of the hospital. During the meeting Doctor James Walters (played by Brian Hutchinson) comes in and let’s the know that Nurse Albany (played by Dena Tyler), the one who attended Theo, was under administrative review.
Afterwards, Dylan goes and talks to Julian, who tells him about a series of articles about the hospital and deaths in the ER by a woman named Rebecca Dunmar (played by Tracee Chimo) that was never published. Dylan sets up a meeting with Rebecca who tells him that she’s willing to give him the name of some of her contacts.
Dylan goes and visits Derek (played by Joe Holt) and Vanessa (played by April Matthis) Taylor who happened to be the two in the hospital the night Theodore died. Derek tells Dylan that Dr. Walters misdiagnosed Vanessa causing her to have the stroke. He says that she wasn’t paid any attention because of their insurance.
Dylan and Lizzie both feel its Nurse Albany and Doctor Walters and they follow Albany when she heads to the back of the hospital, only to find the two having sex. Outside, Albany and Walters explain that their hands are tied when it comes to giving quality care to patients no matter their insurance. During the conversation, Dylan figures out Albany was the one who called in the tip about the hospital. She says she had complained about faulty machinery but it was just swept under the rug and that’s why she was under administrative review, leaving Lizzie and Dylan back at square one.
Meanwhile…
Lizzie goes to do some lunchtime exercises when a man named Jeff (played by David Gregory) approaches her. He tells her he’s a personal trainer and hands her his weights and raises her arms telling her how to lift right – and when she does – apparently hits him in his nose. He then says she can’t help but to accept his offer for dinner and to give him her phone number. He gets almost excited when he sees she works for the NYPD.
Later while Lizzie is working on the case she is served with a subpoena to appear in court by – you guessed it – Jeff.
She asks Andy for help, since he was a lawyer. Andy gives Lizzie some advice and says he will look into it.
When Lizzie gets called in by Jeff and his lawyer, they tell her they will settle out of court for one million dollars. Just as Lizzie was about to sign, Andy comes in and says he is counter suing for emotional damage done to his client. They readily drop the lawsuit. Andy tells Lizzie that Jeff is a scam artist and has done this multiple times before.
The theme of this episode seems to be scammers… from the brokers, to the hospital, to Jeff the “professional” scammer.
While…
Dylan lets us in on a little piece of his past. He tells Lizzie he hates hospitals because in sixth grade his mom was in the cancer ward and he spent most of his childhood there visiting her.
I love that each episode gives us a sneak peek into each of their lives.
And the criminal of the episode is…
After breaking into the hospital with Julian, Dylan and Julian figure out someone was making the machines malfunction from a cell phone with malware using sound to do it.
Dylan has Julian set up a meeting between himself and the hacker. Lizzie meets with the hacker, all wired up, who turns out to be none other then Rebecca. During the meeting Rebecca tells Lizzie that it’s not personal, but political – and after further investigation they found out Rebecca’s fiancé had died at CrossTown hospital due to the lack of care because of their insurance.
When Lizzie and Dylan realize this they also realize Rebecca was probably onto them and rushed to the hospital. After a standoff where Lizzie told Rebecca, who had taken the head of the hospital hostage, that she knew her pain and that she had lost the love of her life as well, they were able to bring her in with no one else getting hurt.
The end of the episode saw Dylan, Lizzie and Andy going to get a drink and having fun.
This episode really pulled the curtains back on big corporations. This also includes some hospitals that are only out for their bottom dollar instead of the patients.
