Recap/Review: Blood and Treasure Episodes 1 and 2
CBS introduced us to its new adventure summer series, Blood and Treasure on Tuesday and it did not disappoint. One of the creators, Stephen Scaia, is active on social media giving fans a behind the scenes look at the episodes while they were filming. From these early photos, the show definitely presented us with an Indiana Jones vibe.
After watching the first two episodes, it delivered on that feeling and also gave me a sense of DaVinci Code and Tomb Raider as well. If you enjoy these movies and going on journeys, Blood and Treasure is not to be missed.
Missing!
The first episode begins in Egypt, where Dr. Ana Castillo (Alicia Coppola) finds the tombs of Antony and Cleopatra in the Pyramids of Giza, except Cleopatra is missing. She wasn’t the first to find the tombs, as several dead soldiers fill the pyramid. She managed to snag a trinket off one of the soldiers, before being taken hostage by terrorists. They raid the pyramid and blow it up.
Cut to Danny McNamara (Matt Barr), a former FBI agent, now in the antiques business. Dr. Castillo was his mentor and friend to Jay Reece (John Larroquette), who now funds Danny’s expeditions. He asks Danny to find Dr. Castillo. To help him on his venture, Danny requests the help of former flame, Lexi Vaziri (Sofia Pernas) because of her expertise as an art thief.
Very early on we see that Danny is a very moral and ethical type of guy. That coupled with Lexi’s “skills”, proves for an entertaining, back and forth bantering that Barr and Pernas pull off flawlessly throughout both episodes.
You Called A Thief
They find out about a black market bazaar where they see some Egyptian artifacts. The middleman showing the artifacts is Aiden Shaw (Michael James Shaw). Lexi tries to pull a fast one on Shaw, but he catches on and pulls a gun on her.
Interpol raid the place and Shaw escapes with Lexi, but Danny follows them and saves her. They kidnap Shaw and steal a car as Danny’s by-the-books demeanor begins to shatter.
They question Shaw to find out who he’s working for, but realize that Shaw isn’t who he says he is. He stole the identity and is actually Dwayne Coleman. He requests two million dollars to tell them who he works for.
As Danny makes a call to get the money, Lexi lets Shaw escape after she put a tracking device on him. He leads them right to who he is working for, Karim Farouk (Oded Fehr). He is responsible for killing Lexi’s father and a joint US/Egypt taskforce thought they had killed Farouk a few years earlier.
The Man Who Doesn’t Die
When they realize Shaw lead them to where they were keeping Dr. Castillo, Farouk shoots Shaw, but doesn’t kill him as he is wearing a vest. Danny saves Dr. Castillo and Shaw as Lexi goes after Farouk. Farouk escapes, but Interpol arrives and agent Gwen Karlsson (Kaita Winter) arrests Lexi and Danny.
They escape captivity by parachuting out of a plane and landing on Vatican grounds, which of course, gets them arrested again. Danny calls in a favor from his friend Father Chuck (Mark Gagliardi) who gets them out of the Vatican and on their way to find Shaw.
Shaw stole rubies from the artifacts that Farouk still had, and is now trying to sell them off. He is at a casino where the dealer has poisoned the chips. Lexi and Danny find him, but it’s too late. They chase after the dealer and pull the antidote from her, in enough time to save Shaw’s life.
Putting The Puzzle Together
Gwen visits Dr. Castillo to ask her questions about the tombs. Dr. Castillo gives the trinket she took from the dead Nazi soldier in the tomb, to the agent Gwen was with. The trinket is inscribed with a symbol that Dr. Castillo is trying to figure out.
I have to admit, I’m a little surprised that the good doctor gave up the trinket so easily. The agent places the trinket in a wall with several other trinkets just like it. Some of the holes on the wall are still vacant.
Will we see the rest of them filled? Will Lexi and Danny catch Farouk? Hopefully we will get these answers by the end of this season.
Overall, this was an action packed, edge-of-your-seat, adventure that entertained throughout both episodes. The mix of comedy and romance intertwined in the story fit perfectly and wasn’t overdone or seemed out of place.
The highlight of the show was Father Chuck and I hope we get to see more of his character this season!
