Episode 6: The Ghost Train of Sierra Perdida

The episode starts off with a flashback in Spain, 1944.  Cleopatra is on a train and the men protecting her are at odds with each other.  Some want to sell her, believing she is cursed, but they swore to protect her.  Gunfire ensues as the train rolls on.

Chipping in For Groceries

Back to present day at Father Chuck’s place, Danny is up late looking over documents and updates Father Chuck on the search.  He opens his refrigerator to see it almost empty thanks to Lexi. Danny tells him that her living situation is in flux, and we cut to Lexi staying at her friend’s place.  Enter Erica, who didn’t realize Lexi was staying at her place.  When she finds Lexi sleeping on her couch, Lexi draws a knife on her.  Lexi asks her for help restoring the letter from Farouk to her father.  Erica agrees, even though Lexi can’t pay her, but tells her that she needs to find somewhere else to stay.

Keep Digging

Omar and his men are digging to find the train that derailed.  They find skeletons with Moroccan uniforms.  Unsatisfied, Omar tells them to keep digging for Nazi uniforms and for the train.  One of the men with a metal detector finds a piece that was part of a Nazi uniform.  Just then, Carlo Velardi approaches them with his son Luca.  They demand that Omar pay them to keep digging in the area.  Omar refuses at first but agrees to have his men follow Velardi as he leaves.

Gathering Information

At the Carabinieri headquarters, Danny is with Karlsson as they are trying to find who the artifacts were sold to.  (Follow the money….)  Lexi joins them and he asks if she found a place to stay.  She says no and in not so many words, suggests staying with Agent Karlsson. Gwen laughs (and snorts again…I love this character trait.) Lexi makes a call on Danny’s phone and speaks in Serbian.  She was speaking to Petre Novic, one of the men on the list of possible people to buy the artifacts.  She says he’s an “old friend, don’t ask.”  Which seems to be a common theme with Lexi.

He wasn’t thrilled at being outbid, so he was more than happy to tell them who the highest bidder was.  Jessica Wong, billionaire, living in London, who is having a party tonight to show off her art collection.  Gwen is going to try to get a warrant and asks for Danny to help her.  This gives Fabi the opportunity to talk to Lexi.  He doesn’t believe they’ll be able to get the warrant and wants her to go to the party to get any information she can find about the sale.

You’re Bluffing

They go to the party and meet Jessica Wong.  (I have to note this shot that circles the four of them.  It keeps the audience engaged and it gives us the opportunity to see some reactions without using straight cuts.  This was very well done!) Lexi leaves to go over the provenance and this leaves Jessica with Danny.  She begins to quiz him on sculptures and he passes the test.

The camera pans over to Lexi, who is stopped by Simon Hardwick.  He introduces himself as a friend of Danny’s.  He mentions that he met her at a black-market bazaar in Rome, but chose not to reveal that Danny is FBI.  She tries to blow off the comment, but then Simon divulges the information that he knows about the players in the hunt for Cleopatra.  Then, she leaves to go over the paperwork and tells him to talk to her when he knows something that she doesn’t.

She gets to Jessica’s office to go over paperwork, but Jessica comes in with Danny and exposes who they really are.  She asks who they are working for and Danny tells her that they know about the illegal auction.  Then, she tells them that she didn’t exchange money directly, she was told to purchase land in the Andalucia Mountains.  Danny and Lexi leave the party and head for Spain.

You Don’t Know How To Haggle

Riding along on horseback, Danny and Lexi come to a rest stop where they read about a local legend of the ghost train that came out of nowhere and never reached its destination.  Danny pays way too much for the map, supplies and a hat.  (The hat definitely made overpaying worth it.) Now they are off again to search an area where the train could have derailed.

Let Me Show You How This is Done

Simon goes snooping around Jessica’s place and finds a hidden room where she keeps some of her artifacts and notices one of the medallions from the Brotherhood.  He takes the medallion.

They’re Digging in the Wrong Place

Lexi and Danny spot Farouk’s men digging, but they aren’t digging between the spots that were marked on Danny’s map.  They continue on to a spot where there is a curve and a steep drop.  Danny thinks that if a train were to derail that would be the perfect spot.  When they reach the spot, Danny pulls out his shovel to start digging.  As he drops the shovel, it clanks onto metal and they have found the train!   They get into the train and find the crate but not Cleopatra.  They also found some absinthe and Carlo Velardi.  He blames them for ruining his bazaar and losing millions, now he wants to kill them.  Omar joins the party and kills two of Velardi’s men.  He orders Lexi and Danny to start digging.

More Discoveries

Simon is holding the medallion and looks at a board he has created of his findings.  One of the papers he has tacked to the board lists members of the Brotherhood.  On that list, is the name Vaziri…

More Clues

Lexi and Danny start to dig and tell Omar that they found something.  Omar and his men go down to check it out and Lexi lights the absinthe on fire to use as a bomb. Lexi and Danny escape.  Omar and his men make it out of the train car but get stuck in the middle of a gunfight with Carlo and Luca.  Omar kills Luca and escapes.

As they are leaving, Danny stops to check out the skeletons that Farouk’s men found.  He notices that the Nazi’s switched out uniforms, probably moved Cleopatra and headed towards Casablanca.  Lexi gets a message from Erica about her father’s letter and asks to stop off in Rome before heading to Casablanca.  (You know, just stop off…it’s not completely going in the opposite direction.)

Who Was Lexi’s Father

When they get back to Rome, Erica informs them that the letter was a forgery.  So who was trying to implicate Lexi’s father?  Lexi leaves, but Danny stays with Erica and she tells him that Lexi’s money goes to the families that were affected by the bombing.  Erica forges the checks to look like insurance payouts.

Outside, Lexi gets a text message from Simon, wanting to speak with her.  Fabi creeps up on Lexi and tells her that Karlsson is looking to bring her and Danny in for questioning regarding Spain.  She tells Fabi of the letter that she found that was a forgery.  He believes that Ghazal is the one that tipped off Farouk and that’s what got her father killed.  He says if she wants to find out about her father, then she has to trust him.  She doesn’t like the sound of that.  (Neither do I, Lexi.)

She goes to meet Simon, and he tells her that her father was part of the Brotherhood.   End Credits.

Thoughts

It’s satisfying knowing that Simon told Lexi about her father. I wish we knew more about why Simon is so concerned with finding Cleopatra. There’s something about him that just makes me not want to trust him, but he has been completely honest (as far as we can tell.) He didn’t reveal who Danny was and he did keep his promise to let Lexi know about anything he found. So why do I still not trust him?

We are getting closer to Cleopatra!  Maybe…  It seems like another map dot has been checked off, and we are heading to the next. At least they are finding pieces. The empty crate was a nice tease of how close they are getting.

I still enjoy the movie references in each episode and I will never tire of Lexi not getting any of them. I love this character trait about her and it’s a great way to add comedy into the show. And now, on to Casablanca!  (Can’t wait for the movie references in this one!)
