Some things can’t be undone, especially on Purge Night—our characters learn that the hard way in Episode 4 of The Purge.
Jane
Jane has come face to face with the morality of her decision to have David killed. Remember that last episode she found Alison stabbing Mark, all over a job promotion? When she screams at Alison about how could she do something like this, Alison tells her that she saw her computer, she knows what Jane has done, too. This really shakes Jane, realizing that what she’s done is no different than Alison killing Mark.
She tries to call the woman she hired, but can’t get through. Then she frantically tries to call David, I guess to warn him, but gets a message that his voicemail is full. Jane makes one final call, to the hospital where her mom is. She tells the nurse on the phone to tell her mother she loves her, and to tell her that she forgives her. Then she takes a hammer and goes out into the streets alone, trying to get to David and stop what she started.
It doesn’t take long of course before Jane is attacked by some creepy guy. She swings the hammer but misses. He forces her to the ground and tries to make her drink something (we find out later it was a sedative), but just in the nick of time four bad ass women with guns show up: Meet the Matron Saints, their mission, to “protect females against the genecide of Purge.” Turns out that three women are killed for every man on Purge night. Figures, doesn’t it?
Jenna and Rick
While Lila tries to comfort Jenna, who is still upset over Stanton shooting that guy in front of her, we see more flashbacks of how Lila came into the picture. It seems that Rick and Jenna had lost their spark in the bedroom department, and they brought Lila in to spice things up. It worked, but as we see later in Rick’s flashback, they had agreed that they could only be with Lila together, and never alone. But Rick came home one day and found Jenna and Lila making out. He was devastated, and Jenna said she was sorry and promised to stop seeing Lila.
Lila had gone away, but she came back because she missed Jenna. Now, she tries to convince Jenna to let her be a part of her life, and a part of the baby’s life. Jenna says she can’t do that. Back downstairs, Rick is angry that the two of them have been alone together, and he and Lila have some bitter words for each other. Rick says that Lila has served her purpose and they don’t need her anymore, and what’s very interesting, and telling, is that Jenna takes up for Lila, and tells Rick not to talk to her that way. Obviously still some feelings there.
Stanton interrupts their argument and announces that it’s time, something is about to happen. Platters full of daggers get brought out and Stanton takes Rick with him, but Jenna is hesitant to follow—and that’s when the maid takes Jenna aside and gives her a warning: You need to leave this house.
Miguel and Penelope
Penelope has been taken to the Carnival of Flesh, a bizarre Fair type of setting where Purgers bid on people to Purge. She meets an old man there who mistakes her for his granddaughter, and he wants to save her. He causes a big scene and gets himself and Penelope dragged to the front of the bidding line. The old man is bid on, he goes for $45, and then they bring Penelope out. She’s worth a whole lot more and her bidding starts at a whopping $600. Some guy bids $2000 and wins, and as they tie her down the Purger says, “It’s good to see you again, Penny, it’s been awhile,” and Penny starts to scream. Penny knows who this is, his name is Henry. Wait a minute, wasn’t Henry the name that one guy gave Miguel back in Episode 1? Hmmm ….
Meanwhile, Miguel has gone back to Pete the Cop, who gets him some help from “Cowboy.” Cowboy agrees to take Miguel to the Carnival, seems like a pretty good guy, even offers Miguel three life lessons:
- When someone is helping you, don’t interrupt them.
- Stop living in the past.
- Living the dream don’t come cheap.
But Cowboy isn’t as nice as he seems—on the way to the Carnival Miguel hears something rolling around in the back of Cowboy’s truck and the sick truth dawns on him—Cowboy is a Collector, he’s delivering someone to the Carnival.
The episode ends again with our masked man, and he has a name, by the way, his name is Joe. Joe arrives at a supermarket, presumably to try and save the owners, only to go in and find that he’s too late, they’ve both been killed. He screams in agony, takes his mask off, and weeps.
