The InBetween Episode 3: Where the Shadows Fall
For someone like Cassie, hospitals are probably the worst place to be. You can imagine why I’m sure. Because of a promise made to Detective Asante, she heads there this week, hoping to help him with his fiancé. But what she sees (and stumbles upon) while there is what makes this episode particularly horror-filled.
The Gist
While sitting in the room with Sally, she sees a crow hit a window and then has a vision falling to her death. She thinks it may be Sally, but then the lights start to flicker, and she hears a boy giggling in the hallway. He doesn’t speak to her at first but has her follow him to the basement of the hospital. There he tells her that his name is Ethan Grant and that the scary woman won’t let him leave.
A floating female ghost that looks like something out of a horror movie comes flying her way; she is able to close the elevator door just in time. (But uh, shouldn’t a ghost not care about doors?)
Unaware that a nurse fell to her actual death during this terrifying exchange, Cassie is surprised to see Detective Hackett and Asante at the hospital. They were speaking to the head of the hospital about the nurse, Grace and how this happened. From the scene, it appears to be a homicide. Hackett questions why Cassie is there, and she keeps her secret for now, saying that Ethan came to her. She realizes her vision has to do with the dead nurse, not his fiancé. But is everything connected?
Everything is Connected
On the InBetween, of course, it is. It turns out that the nurse, Grace was attached to many of her patients, and had ordered a test on Ethan Grant that was denied by the board and from the surgeon, Shane Vogel. The reasoning is unclear (at least to them at the time). At first, they believe she was sleeping with him, as the roof where she was thrown off was known for hooking up, but preliminary reports suggest otherwise.
Meanwhile, Cassie realizes the basement is home to many spirits locked down there by the angry old woman. She goes to talk to Ethan’s nurses to get more information, thinking that the name he gave to her (Avery) was a nurse. It turns out that she isn’t a nurse, but a patient also sick who can still see him. She tells Cassie that Ethan is very worried and scared and becomes very helpful to the case. Avery is able to explain how Grant actually died.
Things heat up fast—the detectives realize that there must be an Angel of Death that Grace stumbled upon. The person uses a medicine called Succinylcholine, commonly used to paralyze patients during surgery but enough can kill patients. Ethan had an allergic reaction to it, which is very rare. Grace suspected this drug because of this. It’s more than likely what led to her death.
The (Sort of) Happy Ending
With this newfound knowledge, Hackett and Asante get a warrant to look at all the deaths at the hospital where this might have been used. They begin to piece it all together, speaking to the head of the hospital, Weaver, who was very close to Dr. Shane Vogel, Grant’s surgeon, but even closer to Grace. Weaver and Grace were hooking up, and Vogel knew this. He had to get rid of her before she told everyone what he was doing.
And because everything is connected, they find that his mother was patient zero in these suspicious deaths. And what do you know? Cassie confirms that she is the creepy woman in the basement (or as Roven calls her, basement bitch, which I admit is kind of funny).
Hackett and Asante confront him just as he’s about to claim another victim, but instead injects himself. He dies the way he killed others.
And then…
Cassie isn’t done trying to help Grant, though. Ignoring Roven, who has been tormenting her all episode, she goes into the basement and tells Ellen that her son is dead and that she needs him. In a rage, she flies above her and takes off. Yet, the basement is eerily silent. Where are all the people downstairs?
She goes back to Sally’s room, and Asante joins her this time. He admits she is a nonbeliever, so she may be purposely avoiding Cassie. The two of them share more information about each other, including Cassie telling her foster father’s new partner how she ended up with him and Brian. Her mother was also a sensitive and drank herself to death. She says you can dull the senses, but it wrecks your life.
The episode ends with Avery telling Cassie Grant is at peace, which makes her happy.
The Good
The scenes and special effects this episode are awesome. Since so many die in a hospital in awful, unsettling ways, it is a breeding ground for spirits seeking help. And some of these spirits? Yikes. As Cassie tries to help her new friend, she sees a few in the hallway. The special effects on their various deaths are so much better than last week’s strange colored blood on the minivan. It also adds to the creepy feel of the hospital.
Furthermore, Cassie’s visions are a huge plus. I feel myself cringing each time she experiences one. It’s like watching your worst fears come to life, as I’m sure she would agree. Harriet Dyer, in my opinion, does her best acting so far in this episode. I feel as if we see a side to her that we haven’t before and she’s a little more three dimensional.
Ed Roven continues to pique my curiosity. I’m not sure what he is exactly looking for, but his creepy nicknames and persistence make you wonder. He’s aware of everything that happens around her like he’s watching her every move. What does he want from her and is she his solution out of the InBetween?
The Huh
We still don’t really see how the InBetween works. Cassie gives a little background on how you may become a sensitive, but I really question if the show is going to explain more of the supernatural aspect. I truly think it’ll make the show fill in some plot holes.
For example, this episode, the ghost in the basement seems to be stuck down there and can’t follow her upstairs. Why is it that she’s trapped there but other ghosts can roam freely? I don’t expect everything to be explained, but it takes you out of the episode.
The “More Please”
I think the more gruesome this show gets, the more I enjoy it. She is a sensitive, so give us the gritty details of it. Not every spirit she encounters is going to be innocent and I think we see that this go around.
Roven will be sticking around too, it would seem. Cassie seems to have the ability to tell some spirits to go away, but her ability to do this with him seems compromised, or maybe he’s too strong. I still would bet they are more connected than we realize.
Overall, I’m intrigued enough to keep watching.
