I’m about to riot, y’all. While I absolutely love Daniel Dae Kim and I was as thrilled as any LOST fan could be to learn that he’d be added to the cast (he’s already Executive Producer), I AM NOT a fan of the new Chief of Surgery that he plays, Dr. Jackson Han. He’s mean to Shaun, and as you guys know, we don’t take kindly to that. As much as I didn’t like Reznick when she first came on board, she’s an angel compared to this guy. Better straighten up, Dr. Han.

Fighting for Percy

Dr. Han shows up in the O.R. where Shaun, Claire, and Dr. Lim work on a newborn baby named Percy. This tiny baby has multiple birth defects, including defects in her heart and abdomen, and is currently on life support.

Dr. Han clashes with Shaun almost immediately when he insists on music in the O.R., which of course makes it difficult for Shaun to focus. He also gives Claire a hard time because of some ratio/formula thing that she doesn’t know by heart. But Dr. Han is just getting started.

Later, when Shaun is asked by the baby’s mother if the antidepressants she took could have caused the baby’s defects, he answers her honestly—yes, they could have. Hey, we all know Shaun is not a good liar. This devastates the mother to think that it could be her fault. When Dr. Han finds out that Shaun told the mom this, he is angry and confronts Shaun, lectures him about the importance of meeting the patient’s emotional needs. Lim and Claire both go to bat for Shaun, but Han doesn’t seem to care.

Eventually, after a series of horrific ups and downs, including a fight between the mother and father about whether or not to take Percy off of life support and let her die peacefully, Shaun comes through with his miraculous solutions, and the baby is saved. Dr. Han is impressed—but it’s not enough. More about that later.

Can’t Put It Back

Melendez, Reznick, and Park take care of a wealthy businessman who makes all his decisions based on “the numbers,” including life threatening decisions. He has come in just to have some tests run, to be on the safe side since his father died unexpectedly. But during one of the tests they find a tumor, which may or not be malignant. They can’t do a biopsy because of its tricky location. So the deal is, they can leave it, there’s only a 5 percent chance that it’s malignant, but if it is by the time they find out, he’d be too far gone to save. Or they can take it out, which is a dangerous procedure and he could die anyway. After having Melendez run the numbers for him, he decides to have the tumor removed.

There’s a moment where things go bad in the O.R., and they end up having to cut a nerve which will impair his left foot (he’ll walk with a limp), but otherwise the operation is a success. Later, Melendez tells him he’ll let him know the results of the biospy when they come in, but the patient says it doesn’t matter now, they can’t exactly put the tumor back in. Melendez takes the hint from his patient and when the report comes in, he tosses it in the garbage can without looking. Park and Reznick, however, race to the garbage can to see the results, but we don’t get to see what they were.

Glassy Makes New Friends

Dr. Glassman is in chemo where he meets a young guy named Larry. Larry identifies with his cancer, and he believes in supporting each other. Glassman resists Larry’s attempts at friendship at first, but later warms up to him and even plays a game of cards with another chemo patient.

The episode ends when Dr. Han, despite Shaun’s brilliance in the O.R., announces to Shaun that he’s moving him to pathology. Shaun tells him no, that he’s a surgical resident, but Han says “not anymore.” Like I was saying earlier, this ain’t gonna work. I dearly hope that the next episode has Shaun’s fellow surgeons and friends going to battle for him. If not, we fans are going to rebel. You can’t do that to our Shaun!
