The Exorcist Episode 6: We have hit the half way point and with this episode, the writers set us up for an exciting final half of the season.

We start where we left off…

The attic of the Kim household. Andy is still staring at disbelief that his dead wife is standing in front of him. Nicole promises a confused and hurting Andy that they would never be separated again.

John sold the scene beautifully – We could see right on his face all the emotions Andy was going through. I wasn’t feeling Alicia that much and Nikki (Andy’s nickname for Nicole) felt one dimensional. This would change as The Exorcist Episode 6 progresses.

Meanwhile our heroes…

Are discussing the fact that Tomas went ahead and searched the Kim household (even after Marcus specifically said not to.) Tomas suddenly sees the dead bodies of children in the back of Marcus’s truck and while Alphonso has shown us his ability to work a scene – the terrified look on Tomas’s face here is nothing we’ve seen before. After some much needed discussion, they head back to the Kim house to save the children from a demon bent on killing them.

And then we see Truck…

In one of the more heart breaking scenes of the episode, we see Rose and Andy visiting Truck in the psychiatric ward. Truck utters one of the most painful lines of the episode “when can i come home?” After his question is deflected, he tries to tell them that it was the demon that made him do it, but no one is listening. (Just like Alice told everyone the demon was in her father and wasn’t believed ).

We see Rose interacting with Truck but Andy is almost ignoring him and not interacting at all. As Truck is taken back for evaluation he keeps repeating “don’t be mad at me Andy” while Andy seems to not hear him at all.

As Andy is walking out, we see inside some of the rooms and the kids appear to be drugged in order to behave. Andy starts talking to Nikki as Rose finally sees Andy talking to himself and starts to worry.

The demon she does come…

Giving us the reveal we all have been waiting for! After a stressful dinner where Andy literally throws Verity under the bus when insulting the priests, we see Rose, Marcus and Andy sitting and chatting.

Marcus focuses his questioning on Andy who gets more and more apprehensive by the moment. Finally Rose has enough and sends the exorcists away. She also tells Andy about inviting them because she was worried about him.

Outside Tomas doubts himself and Marcus comforts him and asks him to pray with him. We then get transported back to the house where Andy takes Rose into the bedroom for a love making session – and – while that is happening, Harper’s crazy mother sneaks in and tries to kidnap her.

Thankfully our two exorcists are there to stop her. As they try to stop Harper’s mother, Verity screams for Andy – who we see is allowing the demon to kill Rose, but snaps out of it when he hears her. Running out he grabs Harper’s mother and stabs her with a knife.

Demon-possessed Andy is finally shown and, as the show fades away, we are left wondering if our two heroes can save him. Can/will they save the children and the Kim family?

But let’s not forget about Mouse and Bennett…

They’ve returned to Chicago to confront Maria Walters, who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and is dying. They offer the demon a chance at salvation if he releases the names of others but (of course) the demon refuses and as Maria lay dying from an IV of holy water – we learn Mouse has been possessed before and that’s what started her on becoming an exorcist. Bennett, shaken by the revelation, and worrying about Marcus and Tomas (who he learns the demons are targeting,) shoots Maria in the head. The last thing we see is Maria’s eyes becoming normal and her possession over.

Is family and love…

Enough to pull Andy from the darkness? This episode not only pulled out the “freaky factor” but it pulled at the heartstrings. We saw how kids with mental disorders are treated, with medicine instead of love. We now have to hope that somehow Verity can forgive Andy for throwing her under the bus and using her treatment at the camps as an attack against Marcus and Tomas. This season is really exploring the tragedy of mental illness and depression and is doing it successfully and honestly. Let’s hope the Kim family is in for a happy ending just like the Rance family.
