SWAT Episode 21 “Hunted”

SWAT Episode 21

ONE episode left people! How are we going to wait a year for the next season!? We’ll do it together!

We saw a little preview of this week’s episode from last week’s sneak peek. Looks like Hondo and Deacon are side-by-side, in the woods, alone with no team nearby. Did I mention they were being hunted down by a small army of gun-wielding men?

Let’s get into it…

Officers taking heavy fire

Tonight’s episode starts off with a group of guys heading into a bar, shooting the place up. A nearby squad car hears the shots and calls it in. Mumford’s team is en-route to the bar but get there a little too late. Three shooters end up getting the jump on Mumford and his team.

Back at HQ, Jess brings Hondo and his team up to speed to help Mumford track down the shooters. Deacon says his old Commanding Officer, Hawkins, used to work undercover with the shooter’s gang, Montrose Merc Crew. They split up with Hondo and Deacon heading into the hills to talk to Hawkins.

While up at Hawkins place, they notice the door wide open and his gun missing. Hondo and Deacon think he left on foot, and in a hurry. Deacon decides to call into HQ. While he’s outside, Hondo notices a light reflection a few yards away.

“Deacon, get down!” – Hondo

First five minutes of the episode and they’re already getting shot at!

Hondo covers Deacon while he runs into the cabin for cover. Hondo takes one of the shooters out, they flip a table over to act as a shield and brace themselves.

Just another day at the office.

Hondo creates a distraction so they can escape the cabin while the shooters move in closer. The plan works as Deacon and Hondo try to create distance between them and the shooters. Deacon thinks they should follow a trail to look for Hawkins in his hunting blind to see if he knows what’s going on.

For they have sinned

Back in the Burbank area, the rest of the team is with Mumford searching for the rest of the gang that shot up the bar. Street and Tan find the guy Mumford shot, dead in a backyard shed. They also notice a church window wide open and have a good idea of where the other two are hiding.

SWAT raids the church and grabs the other two members. Street hands Mumford a piece of paper from one of the guys’ pockets leaving everyone curious. Turns out it’s a hit-list.

I’m guessing Hawkins is one of the names on that list.

Hunters become the hunted

While searching the woods for Hawkins, Deacon approaches his hunting blind. Hondo notices a man coming up behind Deacon which makes him turn around. It’s Hawkins and he fills Hondo and Deacon in on why the Mercs are trying to kill him.

He tells them that he put a lot of them in jail and they must be pissed off about it. He also lets them know there’s a Ranger station around that area, where Hondo and Deacon can radio for backup to get them out of there.

WTF

As Deacon and Hondo make their way through the woods to the Ranger station with Hawkins, they’re discussing everything that’s happened. Hawkins mentions something about not being surprised the Mercs went after the rival gang, the Jackals. Hondo stops him and says they never told him who the Mercs went after.

Hawkins puts on an ashamed face but yells out a cue, prompting the rest of the Mercs to come out of hiding to take them out.

Guess he wasn’t on that hit-list after all.

Hondo and Deacon make a run for it but end up at a cliff. They end up jumping off and into the trees they go. Hawkins and the rest of the Mercs catch up to the cliff and lay out a crazy amount of fire. Hawkins confesses to giving out the order to shoot at Hondo and Deacon back at the cabin.

I’m the Captain now

Hawkins lets his crew know that Hondo and Deacon are highly trained and skilled but they’re also outnumbered and outgunned. As Hondo and Deacon try to create some distance between them and Hawkins, Hondo realizes he’s got a pretty big gash in his side and Deacon patches him up.

Deacon feels guilty for not realizing Hawkins switched teams. Hondo tells him that he could’ve never seen that coming and it’s definitely not his fault. They debate their next move but ultimately decide to run for the tree line to a flat and open area where the chopper will see them.

Back at HQ

Jess, Chris, and Luca are bringing each other up to speed with what they know. They haven’t heard back from Hondo or Deacon but they found out that there’s an inside source for the Mercs, based on bars they’ve been shooting up.

Mountain Men

Hondo and Deacon are still on the run coming up with plans on the fly. Deacon sets a trap to buy them a little time in case the Mercs catch up sooner than they think. They have another problem that they don’t know about.

They were counting on dispatch sending out a search party when they didn’t check-in after three hours. Hawkins is back at the cabin covering their car so it won’t be seen when he hears the radio for Hondo and Deacon to check-in. He pretends to be them and Jess gets word back at HQ, believing the call.

No backup, no help, and now dispatch and everyone else think everything is fine. What the hell are they going to do now?

“I don’t know why you’re acting so proud, half our squad hadn’t heard of you clowns til this morning” – Street

Street and Jess interrogate the Merc gang member they grabbed from the church. They tell him that the Jackals are coming to town in retaliation for what the Mercs did. Jess tells him to take a deal in exchange for telling her where everything will be going down. He stays silent and they realize they have a big problem on their hands.

Mountain Men – Part II

Back in the woods, Hondo thinks him and Deacon should take a shortcut up a rock wall to the top of the hill. Since Deacon has experience with that kind of terrain, he decides against it. Hondo tries pulling rank but Deacon refuses and goes his own way. Hondo catches up with him to find out what his deal is.

Deacon tells Hondo that he knows more about the woods and what to do than Hondo does. They bicker back and forth about rank and then Deacon’s true feelings come out. He says he should’ve been team leader but because Buck made a mistake, it went to Hondo instead. Hondo thinks Deacon is saying that he didn’t deserve to be team leader but that’s Deacon’s intention.

While they argue differences, they hear one of Deacons traps go off in the distance. They notice two Mercs approaching their location. If the others hear any shots they will know exactly where they are, so Deacon and Hondo try to take them out silently. Everything is going well until one of the Mercs pulls out a pistol and shoots in the air right before Deacon can disarm him.

CRAP!

They tie the two Mercs up, take their guns, and make a run for it. When they reach the top they are both confused as to why there’s no rescue. They realize Deacon’s car is still back at the cabin and Hawkins must’ve called in to dispatch. Despite the sticky situation they’re in, they’re still arguing about who should’ve been team leader.

Hondo lets Deacon know that it wasn’t always easy for him growing up and instead of succumbing to the street life, he stepped up to become the man his mom needed when his dad left. He had it hard going through LAPD and making his way to where he is now.

Deacon feels like he deserves it just as much as, if not more than Hondo. Guess they both feel the same about themselves and all their hard work. Ultimately, Deacon says Hondo has been more than a leader and he’s proud to serve by his side. He still feels cheated because of Buck’s mistake but he realizes Hondo worked just as hard as he did.

It is what it is.

Get to the chopper!

Still interrogating the Merc member Street and Tan grabbed, Jess comes up with a plan to get him to talk. It works and the guy sings like a canary giving up Hawkins. Jess’ jaw drops and realizes this could mean Hondo and Deacon are in trouble. They get the recording of when Hawkins calls in to dispatch and realize it’s not who they want it to be.

The team gears up to go get their fearless leaders.

Help is on the way, dear!

Back on the mountaintop, the Mercs move in on Hondo and Deacon, cornering them. They keep moving to create some distance and possibly get out of there alive. They’re putting up the fire-fight of their lives, taking the Mercs out one at a time. They’re low on ammo so Deacon decides to pull the flare.

The chopper, with the team inside, is up in the air searching for them with thermal recognition. They don’t know which ones are Hondo and Deacon and look defeated until Chris spots the flare. Hondo and Deacon take out two more guys when they see the chopper above them.

The team ropes down from the chopper coming to Hondo and Deacon’s rescue. Luca patches Hondo up and Deacon grabs the gear the team brought for them. Hondo, despite his pain, bucks up and shows why he’s team leader. They gear up and head out to go grab Hawkins and the rest of the Mercs.

The rest of the team grab four Mercs, leaving one and Hawkins left. Hondo and Deacon catch up to Hawkins and try to talk him into surrendering. Hawkins tries to make a move but Deacon takes him out before he can. He goes over to check on him but Hawkins is gone.

In the locker room, Hondo tells Deacon he doesn’t regret taking the team leader position but he knows Deacon would have a been a great one and hope he gets his chance.
