Supernova Questions about “Home”

Ongoing Questions

Do we get to learn about cultures other than Moclans? YES! Well, kind of. We didn’t learn a lot more about Xelayans than we already knew, at least it wasn’t Moclan body-function based.

Bortus and Klyden’s future (or any other relationships)? No further details in any shipboard relationships. This episode could have used a stronger B plot though…

Still re-hashing Star Trek? Kind of? We DID get to see another former ST actor appear on the show. This week’s villain, John Billingsley, played Dr. Phlox for the entire run of Star Trek: Enterprise. Anyone else wowed by having two ST doctors on-screen at the same time? This nerd was.

In another sense though, this reminds me of the Enterprise D’s security officer Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby) getting written off the show several episodes into the first season…

This Week’s Questions

Will Alara come back?

I bet so, but maybe not for a while. Fans that followed the show during the hiatus probably heard rumors of Alara (Halston Sage) being written off the show. This happens a lot when an actor’s star appears to be on the rise and other projects fill their schedules. Looking at her IMDB page and… no, that doesn’t actually look overly busy at all. Poking around the Internet a little hasn’t revealed why the actress has departed the show or if she’s coming back. Maybe it’s just a little me-time that she wants.

Alara deciding to reconnect with her family gives her a reason to stay away for a while, but not necessarily forever. Much like the afore mentioned Denise Crosby on STTNG, Alara could return in many ways – memories, recordings, simulations, run-ins at space cantinas, alternate universes where she’s been cross-bred with an enemy species (I think Crosby returned as a Romulan at some point…).

Storywise, her character’s departure feels premature and unfulfilling. Where some characters have been VERY fleshed out, all we know about Alara is her vast physical strength, her desire to prove herself, and her lack of luck in dating. That’s really not a lot, and I’d like to know more because the parts we have seen, have been endearing.

Is Tharl the permanent head of security?

I hope not.

My wife has this thing (misophonia) where if she hears eating sounds, she goes… Just don’t eat loudly around her, I’m begging you. Anyway. Tharl gave us all a taste of what living in Caroline’s head might be like at mealtime. On those grounds alone, as much as I like Patrick Warburton and the magic of having multiple Seinfeld actors in heavy makeup at the same time, I’d really like to see him ship out.

By all Internet accounts, Jessica Szohr will take over the head of security position at some point this season. She’s set to play another Xelayan. Since last season established that Xelayans rarely leave their homeworld, Seth hopefully provides a good story reason for the species duplication. I bet a forthcoming Supernova question will address that once we meet her.
