When uncomfortable situations arise, choir members are forced to “face the music”.
Reverend Jax kicks off the latest episode of Perfect Harmony by congratulating the choir on their proven ability to “defeat our own potential” after earning “Most Improved” in the local choir competition. Now they have the opportunity to compete regionally due to Arthur’s Princeton clout. The only problem is Ginny’s fear of performing a solo at the event.
In other news, Wayne struggles to find somewhere to crash other than Dwayne’s couch when he feels betrayed by Dwayne’s affections for Ginny. Wayne tries to stay at the church on the down low, but Reverend Jax discovers him walking around there in all his “Adam and Eve tuxedo” glory!
Jax grows uncomfortable with the unexpected aspects of Wayne’s stay. When the reverend is bitten by one of Wayne’s snakes, he turns to the bottle for medicinal purposes. When Dwayne mistakes Reverend Jax’s indulgence for a drinking problem, he is forced to reveal Wayne’s secret and the two best friends are forced to confront Dwayne’s feelings for Ginny.
Here are some of the many “high notes” from Perfect Harmony episode 3 ‘No Time For Losers’.
Ginny a.ka. Darlianna Woodbeam
Even though Ginny is plagued with fear of doing a solo, the audience gets to enjoy not one, but two amazing performances from Ginny this week. One is performed alone. The second one starts out as her alter ego Darlianna Woodbeam but ends up being all Ginny.
Ginny realizes she must face her anxiety when son Cash suggests he will give up on his dyslexia treatment just like she avoids doing a solo. Arthur knows she can perform solo when he spies her singing “9 to 5” at the diner when she thinks she is alone. Ginny reveals that she could do that because she pretends she is Dolly Parton. Arthur suggests that she adopt an alter ego to suppress her fears and “Darlianna” is born.
Open Mic Night
Ginny takes Darlianna on the road to Conley Fork’s local open mic night. It’s not a smooth trip to the mic, however. Ginny hilariously slips in and out of her people-pleasing Ginny persona and the bold, brash personality of Darlianna when she cannot help but offer to get Arthur a drink.
As Ginny’s turn at the mic approaches, she offers to let someone else go next. Arthur calls her on the delay tactic and the pair begin exchanging insults. When Arthur accuses her of letting down not only herself but also Cash, Ginny retreats to the ladies room. Arthur follows her telling her she cannot hide because he can see her big hair over the stall. Ginny lashes back calling Arthur “Mr. Fancy Professor”. Arthur corrects her with “Dr. Fancy Professor”.
Ginny claims Arthur doesn’t understand about “feeling like dirt”. Arthur shares a poignant reminder that he struggles to get through every day without his late wife. He explains that music is the one thing that keeps him going. Ginny realizes that they need one another and decides to perform a powerful solo rendition of “Here You Come Again” on stage.
The performance is so moving that Wayne understands how Dwayne is so taken with Ginny. The best friends reconcile.
Side “notes”
Perfect Harmony is chock-full of clever dialogue and attention to detail. It would be a disservice to leave out these hilarious lines and details.
- Wayne tries to convince Reverend Jax to keep his stay at the church a secret by citing “attorney customer pilgrimage”.
- When Ginny tries to insult Arthur’s housekeeping habits, he fires back saying he has tried to hire cleaning help. He says the problem is that “people get suspicious when you ask them to bring a bunch of bleach down to the old houseboat at the end of the road”.
- #ScarfWatch Arthur’s scarf makes an appearance three episodes in a row. Thank you!
- #WildcatsBasketball The Kentucky basketball team is 3 for 3 in Perfect Harmony mentions. This week Arthur fools the choir into thinking the UK basketball team is at open mic night in order to gain their enthusiasm.
- Carla is an understated delight with her reaction to Wayne regurgitating her cookie to prove a point. She tells him “that was the only gluten free option” and the look on her face is priceless.
- When Arthur turns his nose down at the idea of wearing tennis shoes for your wedding, Wayne snaps back with a deadpanned “You can’t wear dress shoes with shorts.”
- There is a growing respect between Arthur and young Cash. While Cash does not express his thoughts with as much disdain as Arthur, the choir director seems to have an appreciation for Cash’s habit of “telling it like it is”.
Humor, heart and crowd-pleasing musical numbers keep fans coming back for more Perfect Harmony each week.
