Catch up on The Last Ship…

If you crave this show like me it’s been a long wait. Have you been wondering where Captain Chandler and the Nathan James are?  Well, Season 4 takes place 16 months after the ending of Season 3.  Man, have I been excited for this and the show’s creators and cast did not disappoint!  If you love military-based shows and an end-of-the-world premise, then you know already – No other show gives you what this show does.

Episodes 1 and 2

The premiere opens up with an amazing gun battle featuring all our favorites from Vulture team plus a few new faces.  Did you notice all the guys have beards now? One of the actors chimed in on Twitter and told fans the beards are to help them blend in on their away missions. I needed an action fix and got it, right off the bat.

Ok, sure, but the first –real- question I asked was where had Chandler gone after resigning?  Thankfully, the show answered pretty quickly – he moved to Greece with his kids.  They seem very happy and Chandler believes he’s escaped his past. Not so fast. Alex, the man he works for and stays with, not only recognizes him, but takes a moment to remind him of what’s important. The entire world is at stake now that the virus has mutated into the Red Rust, a plant-based virus infecting and spoiling crops across the world.  Chandler wants no part of being a hero anymore, though. Seeking revenge when thugs murder Alex… The former captain can work with that.

We learned very quickly the Red Rust has taken the place as this season’s big boogeyman. Vulture team’s mission in morocco was to buy a quantity of untainted seeds that will potentially save the world.  Nothing goes according to plan and now the chase is on to find these seeds. Captain Slattery and the Nathan James find themselves in trouble over and over, trying to find out where the seeds are headed. In good news, Kara rejoined the James’ crew and the couple of new faces rock-it, like the rest.  What brings trouble to the James, also makes for some really great action scenes for us (which this season has plenty).

Episode 3

The third episode brought us the great reunion we have all waited for, but not like we expected.  Chandler gets tangled up with some bad guys (because let’s face it, being a hero is who he is and he is good at it). One thing leads to another and that happy reunion happens in a fighting pit. Chandler participates only as a cover as he tries to take down the bad guys that killed Alex. Who should happen to volunteer to fight him?  Why, none other than Captain Mike Slattery, himself! They use the fight to talk about seeds, the bad guys, what the heck is going on, you know – the usual.

After the fight, Chandler, Slattery, and Vulture team take on both Omar and Giorgio, the local bad guys dealing in seeds.  The old gang is back and we couldn’t be more excited!  Seeing them all work together to save the world had me jumping with excitement.  Who wouldn’t want to be a part of Vulture team or the Nathan James?  But that excitement soon came to an end when Giorgio’s sister, Lucia, stabs Slattery without the team knowing anything about it.

Some Thoughts

Will Slattery get the seeds to the Nathan James?  Will Vulture team save him? Obviously, I hope Slattery is saved and lives through this. One thing I love about the show’s creators and writers: they are not afraid to kill off main characters, like with Dr. Rachel Scott. She cured the world and still died. That makes Mike’s future somewhat uncertain.

Another unique aspect of The Last Ship is the fact that we get to see so much of the world, and how it’s been affected by the virus.  Most shows in this genre show just one area and not how whatever the danger may be affects the world around them.  The Last Ship has taken us to many other countries and we saw the aftermath there.  I love the quality of the acting and the action sequences leave me breathless.  Whenever I can, I recommend this show, especially if you want to see something no other show on TV does: how the military might actually save us in an end of the world scenario, instead of cause it (or make it worse).
