The Exorcist Episode 9: Ritual and Repetition

The stage is set…

For the final battle in the final episode before the finale.

We begin with Marcus trying to waken Tomas but ultimately having to put him somewhere safe as he searched for the children.

This episode touched on hopes, dreams, fears and belief. We see Tomas seeing himself as the youngest Bishop, never leaving Chicago. He has a church and a congregation – He didn’t follow the calling of an exorcist.

Enter Casey Rance

Remember the young girl Tomas and Marcus saved last season? Casey (Hannah Kasulka) is shown as the manifestation of the demon in Tomas’s head.

We see Tomas fight with his wanting of what he always dreamed his life would be, and what it really is. We can all relate to that inner fight.

Ritual and Repetition

The demon tells us that they’ve been doing this for a long time. And once again it goes into Marcus’s voice, “as you exorcists say: ritual and repetition,” it says mockingly. I think it’s true for most to say we find comfort in repetition because we know what to expect and there won’t be any surprises.

The little church mouse meets the young cub

As time closes in we see Tomas talk to Andy, who tells him that he is growing too weak to fight. As it seems Tomas has awoken, we hear Mouse’s voice who ultimately wakes him up. It was a great way for both to meet each other. She also says, “and I came a long way to find you…” Which, to me, says that she was seeking Tomas and not Marcus.

Andy and the kids

John Cho gives a performance of a lifetime. Not only is he scary but he can deliver some funny lines even when demonic.

The real stars were the young actors and actresses though – They stole the scenes.

Shelby (Alex Barima) took his role as big brother and protector seriously.

We got to see Caleb’s (Hunter Dillon) fear as he could only hear and not see anything, but his bravery at trying to fight back.

Grace (Amelie Eve) made a guest appearance and we saw her bringing Caleb to the well in the early episodes of the season.

Harper (Beatrice Kitsos) seemed to be going cold to everyone until we saw her determination to save Rose.

And Verity (Brianna Hildebrand) gave a powerful performance of bravery. I love every scene between Verity and Marcus.

Leading us to the old, grey lion

Who thankfully found Verity before Andy was about to suffocate her. We see Marcus start an exorcism, again falling into that safe zone of ritual, but was stopped suddenly by the demon. Again, playing to that fear of being forced out of one’s comfort zone. The last we see of Marcus is him being released from the demon’s hold.

Next week is the finish line for this season. Let’s hope Tomas and Marcus find a way to save Andy and his family and themselves in the process. And let’s all hope that Fox gives us a season 3 to keep enjoying our favorite exorcists!
